This Store Sell Durians for 55 Years Since 1965: Golden Phoenix VS Musang King @ Combat Durian

We came to one of the famous durian stores in Singapore called Combat Durian located along Balestier Road with a long history of more than 50 years. This store has been serving 3 generations of customers, now under Madam Linda Ang, 52 the daughter of Mr. Ang Seck Puan. They have been known for Mr. Ang being strict on choosing his durian from the suppliers and Madam Ang took over inspecting every batch sold. He started selling back in 1957 but only fruits and vegetables only after 1965 then he changes to selling durians. Fast forward to 2020, the store is so famous that it was visited by the Indonesian president son among many local Singapore celebrity.
1st time trying golden phoenix durian, so for all the 1st timers cheers to all. We encounter golden phoenix after trying multiple durians from multiple durian stores all over Singapore. We are durian hunters in the durian season and food hunter every other time.
Golden Phoenix has a very spikey shell with pale yellow to white flesh when open. They have a firm and dry texture like the jackfruit but has a very pleasant taste of sweetness and creaminess. The bite is both intense and complex, with the durian giving a sweet and alcohol after taste that is very unique to even describe.
Musang King or Mao Shan Wang has a rather shorter spike with deep yellow to orange flesh. The taste is phenomenal with a rich and creamy sweet taste and the soft and buttery texture of the flesh just melts in your mouth. One bite and you will be addicted to having more as there is a bit of a bitter after taste to get you hook for more.

Why these D198 is different from my place (Pahang). I got do some research about this D198. And it's totally different from johor. What i see in Pahang, same in Fama Malaysia. Still in confuse. Which one is the true D198.

Personal opinion, i would rate Ah Seng durian as the best store in Singapore. The durian is good and affordable price

Golden Phoenix has too many seeds even though they are small cube like but MSK seeds tend to be a lot less and flatter. So when you touch the pulp in Golden Phoenix you could feel the seed humps.

i like Golden Phoenix but it's difficult to get it in KL these days.. quite rare I would say. here we call it Kim Hong the trees were mostly planted in the south especially in Johor and the yield is considerably low. thats why it can be as expensive as Musang King

@@LaughingFoodie same here too. durian prices in Kuala Lumpur these days are significantly higher than last season back in Dec-January. at least RM8-10 more wait till early August where 2nd stage of fruiting will start to drop in Johor and Pahang. hopefully prices will be lower and more affordable and be careful with D24. only choose smaller size one weighing around 1.4kg and below. bigger size D24 is usually hard/unripe
