I’m sure his instructor was great. The calm that he keeps throughout a terrifying situation that has probably crossed his mind hundreds of times is incredible though. His ability to keep his head is likely what kept him alive and the plane intact.

He handled it like a pro! Well done. I see he briefly squawked 7500, then quickly picked up on it and switched 7700. For those who aren't aware, they are both emergency codes. As pilots we remember them by... 75-taken alive (hijacking), 76-in a fix (radio issues), 77-going to heaven (engine / mechanical failure).

You can definitely see his hand shaking when he is adjusting the frequency on the instrument panel. However, these small single engine prop planes are not the smoothest ride. When you add the engine going out, the loss of air speed, and the drop in altitude you will have some good vibrations going through the plane. Flying a single prop in a bunch of turbulence is pretty gnarly so I can’t even imagine this situation. This guy handled it like a pro…also got super lucky there was a field right under him!

It can be a scary situation, but most airplanes are aerodynamic and are built to able to glide, especially one like this small craft he has here. @@BMWiE-lz3nu yes its part of the training process. You get a solo about 10-15 hours into training. That one is usually a touch and go at the home field. @@hyperstargaming6150... From the original video.... On May 22, 2021 Student Pilot Brian Parsley was completed his solo long cross country flight. Approximately 12 miles from airport started experiencing rough engine. Assuming it was "carb ice" took appropriate measures. The camera was started after it cleared to show instructor should it happen again. The aircraft ran out of fuel and this was 100% my responsibility at the end of the day. I did do my flight plan, checked fuel, and all necessary checks prior to leaving. It's also worth noting I've flown the same route with my instructor. So using this assumption and the fact I did my flight planning correctly flew. This was the wrong decision and the biggest takeaway for me. I will get fuel going forward every time I land regardless of what gages state or distance. That mistake could've cost a life. This was more than just a "near death" experience. It was an incredible learning opportunity for others as well.

@@AcmePhoto The fuel gauges on a Cessna aircraft are never anywhere close to accurate, it’s likely that the gauges read an acceptable amount of fuel when in reality he was running on empty. This is the risky part about flying Cessna’s, you have to assume how much fuel you have. It’s ridiculous that they were constructed and designed this way. I wouldn’t say it was pilot error though since this is the normal way the aircraft operates.

If you wonder why he was putting the code "7700" 7700 is basically a way to declare an emergency, and it sends the code to the ATC. It is used for General emergencies like engine failures, gear deploy fail, etc.

To ANYONE who's just starting to fly, never, ever get complacent, regardless of how many hours you have. This is especially important in a single-engine. As you're flying VFR, you should ALWAYS be monitoring your surroundings and identifying potential landing spots or runways. As cynical as it sounds, many GA fatalities are down to a lack of competency and complacency. When your engine fails, you're not just going to fall out of the sky. Take a deep breath, and fly the plane. Slow everything down and immediately identify where you're going to land. After you've established your glide speed, squawk 7700 and i-dent. I always encourage anyone, especially students, to request VFR flight following. This just might save your life. Remember that radar contact is lost (depending on distance from field) at around 1,600AGL. If you can slip the aircraft down and land close to where you were at that altitude, the better, but more importantly is just ensuring that you get down. Take your sod-field landings seriously. Landing in a field is a different feeling from a runway, especially when you haven't accounted for wind speed/direction. Basically, as you're ascending through your licenses, from your PPL, to your instrument, commercial, CFI, MEI, ATP, etc. It seems like there's a significant amount of irrelevant information, but they're teaching you those things for a reason. If your instructor brushes over certain items, get a new one. I was taught by a LTC who had 30 years with American in a 737 and 27 years flying the KC-135. Not one piece of information was dropped, and it has saved me multiple times when I was flying single-engines. Do your pre-checks and walk-arounds. Don't get complacent. Don't just rely on Foreflight. Take your IFR training seriously and learn how to shoot an ILS and read an approach plate even for your PPL. Read the TAF's (Foreflight has dropped the FRZ multie times), METARS, etc. It's so much work, but when you know that you're safe and you can enjoy what you're experiencing, flying is a life-changing experience. Enjoy it. Just be safe. You're too valuable to lose you to a stupid and preventable incident. Also, go to best buy, get the basic Logitech yoke ($30), and get Microsoft 2020 if you can. Practice, practice, practice. You'd be amazed how much it helps. Just a few tips from a young pilot who wants all of you to stay safe and live to tell your tale.

@@SapphireNight Unfortunately, you have to meet the strict legal definitions for it to count. At my school, we have had several students who needed to redo their cross country flight because the distance between the airports was actually 49.8 nautical miles instead of 50, which they didn't even notice because the map software rounds that up to 50. I understand why it's that strict - they need to draw the line somewhere; it's just rough to imagine having to do it again 😅
