Not a deal, but discovered that the price of chicken at my local middle eastern food grocery store is much much cheaper than what’s on offer at the regular grocery stores (in the Toronto GTA).

Just got a pork shoulder for $15 (at the same chain you shop). Going to butcher it up, get the bone out for soup, fat for rendering (oil is expensive!), see if I can get a small roast out of it. If not then stir fry bits and pull pork?

I enjoy the "what's on sale" theme, I think it reflects the way that many of us shop. Similarly, I suppose you could do "what's at the back of the cupboard" or "what's at the bottom of the freezer."

I love how you move between the times so seemingly effortlessly. I noticed during the lockdowns that you did something similar, and I just wanted to say bravo. Your ability to simplify what seems complex into easily digestible methods and your ability to shrug off not having something perfect or what have you is so refreshing. Thanks for the great content and here's to a great year for you two and the channels.

That looks delicious Glen. I love your loosey-goosey attitude towards the things you put in your sauce. Got mushrooms? Chuck 'em in. No mushrooms? Don’t. Garlic? Not feeling it? Leave it out. It reminds me of one of my favourite Canadian TV chefs from years ago. James Barber of The Urban Peasant. His mantra was "It's YOUR dinner!" This "what's on sale" feature is great, especially these days.

Hi Glen! I used to work in video, I have my pilot's license but can't afford to fly, and I don't have nearly as much counter space as your set does. So today I found yet another reason to be envious - President's Choice. In the US we had their products in our supermarkets for a while in the '90's and then they were gone. I still miss them. I'll bet those raviolis were pretty good.

We have shopped like this for years. As well, case lot shopping and an extensive pantry help as well. I do a similar take on creamy pasta and use evaporated milk instead of cream. I always have frozen chopped spinach in stock to add and use dried mushrooms as well. A few frozen shrimp or leftover chicken can pull together a quick and tasty pasta supper.

In Pennsylvania, it is traditional to have pork and sauerkraut for New Year's Day. Naturally the stores will have all the pork loins and other pork products on sale the next day. We usually get four or five pork loins to freeze and then pull out as we want them. We enjoy them done in our smoker (we've smoked turkey as well) but our favorite way to prepare the pork is to brine a loin and smoke it for Canadian bacon. It never lasts beyond dinner that night when he makes one of those.

Whipping cream on sale is totally unknown in southern Manitoba Mennonite country. Our local Superstore in Winkler ALWAYS has an entire end aisle in the cooler section with litre whipping cream containers. If you leave without at least 2 in your cart, people tend to look sideways at you. It is not unusual to see someone grab 5 or 6 or more.

Growing up, this kind of cooking would have been completely foreign to me - it was meat and 5 boiled veg 6 nights a week, with a roast on Sunday. But now, this is my kind of cooking, and I love it and meal times so much more! I appreciate that you throw out these ideas to people, because fast food has become so prolific and normalised that the skill of home cooking is really on the outer. (And don't get me wrong... we still typically do at least 1 take out meal a week, more if the kids have a lot of events going on.)

Really appreciate your guidance in this series. One thing I need help with is when you say 'change the spicing, make it your own'. I don't have much idea what spices go well with certain foods or how to combine- never learned these skills. Perhaps when you cook a dish you might portion it into several pots and show us different spicing, as you many times describe at your conclusion. Thanks for all your shows, including the flying and destinations (and eateries)!

My mom always said "the smell is the taste" when it comes to spices. Get small containers to start with, and try out your combinations in a dish you find easy, like a burger or sloppy Joe.

You know what grinds my gears about Loblaws/Superstore/Zehrs …it used to be 50 off 😂 It still is on bakery, hot and cold deli and veggies but now 30 on meat. So much is thrown out in Windsor because Zehrs is considered too expensive for this blue collar town and is usually empty versus Walmart across the street. But I picked up about 30 items on 30 and 50 off today and filled my freezer.Love these videos…..

Just a quick comment on the pepperoncini. Out west, I am in Washington State, pepperoncini are normally pickled and look very similar to banana peppers. I am guessing that is not the case here as your pepperoncini looked more like a salsa. Just curious. That being said this dish looks great and is something I will be trying. Just wondering about (re) freezing these pasta, there is a mention "previously frozen" at the bottom right side of the package. Usually, the "rule" is to not re-freeze food. Is that a myth? Or maybe some type of food can be re-frozen without bacteria proliferation risks, or texture/flavour alteration?

That is a great idea! My daughter saw online the technique of putting condiments in the produce drawers and putting the produce in the shelves on the door.
