Years ago we lived in the mountains. Daisy our 25 pound terrier was just messing around in the backyard when up from behind came about 25 turkeys. She saw them about 30 feet behind her and tried to ignore them, but very very slowly, up they came. Then the lead Turks started stamping their feet while slowly creeping up. Daisy saw them and slowly turned to face them. They stopped and then came on. When they got about 15 feet from her, you could tell if you watched her that her attitude changed. All of a sudden she CHARGED straight at them and ALL of the turkeys went straight up in the air and amid much gobbeling, then flew off in all directions. Boy howdy, ol Daisy was sure proud of herself from the way she strutted around. They never bothered her again, but would camp out on our roof and liked to attack the trailer connector on my Tacoma.

What an awesome story! Sounds like Daisy was a true warrior who decided to show those turkeys who’s boss! I bet the moment they all took off in different directions was an incredible sight. I was driving in a residential semi-rural area down a quiet street, and noticed a turkey hen standing in the middle of my lane. I pulled up slowly, waiting for her to cross the street. Nope. She maintained her position right in front of my car, staring at me. I honked quickly, she gobble-gobbled immediately. I laughed, anticipating she'd finally get going. Heck no! LOL. It's like we were in a territorial stare-off. ( Cue the score from "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly". ) I honked again. She slowwwwwwly walked off. Taking her own sweet time. Nature.

@@WildHaven8 For several years he had a big brother who was a 95 lb German Shepard, and they used to play all the time. The Shepard would literally let the little guy bite on his jowls and hang there as he walked around. It was wild watching them "fight" with each other. When the big guy had enough, he would swat the little shit across the room a few times before he got the hint. Sadly the Shepard passed a coup years ago and the little one was looking for a sparring partner, I think. Scared the hell out of me when he started going after things. He's finally starting to chill out. I see the turkeys almost every day, and I've had some fights on my lawn, so I had to click the vid. Seeing a couple Tom's square off is pretty wild too. It's funny bc there are only two of them in the whole group, and the rest are female. And these guys are risking injury to get all the ladies, instead of sharing. Lived in a commune in west Texas. We had Turkeys walking around freely. It was pretty clear they didn't want attention. We had a deer one of the fellows found on the side of the road. Named it Venison. Deer are docile. Had some goats including one big ram named Alexander. He was one obstinate SOB. But one day he ran afoul of the Stallion of a herd of wild Shetland that lived there. Tex. Tex turned around and kicked him flying into the Barn. Alex was never quite the same. ha. @@WildHaven8 They almost always travel in flocks. They may not have the most handsome faces but their feathers are pretty iridescent colors. They typically move away from me if I stop to take their pictures. The old growth forested areas are good places to hide from predators. I didn't know how dangerous they can be but I wouldn't even think about hurting or killing one because at the very least I would get a hefty fine or possibly even jail time if I got busted by a conservation officer. I think they're pretty birds and I get worried that they might get run over by a passing car. You should always keep a healthy distance from any animal that has offspring, and it isn't just bear cubs and sow bears that can hurt or kill you. The one time that Canadian geese use their wings as deadly weapons is when they have goslings. Even does will attack you if you get too close to their fawns. I actually had a doe come after me because I accidentally got too close to her fawns. I backed away immediately and fortunately the fawns started moving away in the opposite direction. At that point she turned around and followed them.

Suddenly the two took after my bus refusing to give right of way. I got off the bus, removed my jacket and chased them a good seventy-five feet down the road only to return to the bus to find them right behind me. I drove slowly as they continued to peck for a good fifty yards. Later I found out animal control relocated them.

Do you think this kind of behavior is more about defending their territory, or were they just aggressively curious?

We have a Coopers Hawk here who is trying to eat turkeys chicks. Last time we saw this, one of the hens took him down, and almost pecked him to death. He was able to escape, but never attacked again. Our turkeys nest in trees, at 100-to120feet high, and above our roofs. they fly from house top to house top. We see them fight with each other, and sometimes kill each other. They are dangerous. When I was a kid, our families warned us not to go out alone among the Roosters or the Turkeys. If provoked, the Toms will attack you. One of our neighbors goes out among them when the Toms are doing their mating pratices, and films them, but she knows how to talk to them. For birds, they are actually fairly smart, and can understand simple signaling.

@@WildHaven8 It was a misrepresentation of what he wrote. He criticized using the eagle as an icon of a fraternal organization because thought the eagle was lazy, a rank coward and of bad moral character. He wasn't talking about the country's use of it, but a private organization. It's a bit odd that a man known for his common sense virtues would anthropomorphize animals in that way but maybe he was trying to be satirical. I've seen wild turkeys from close up. Looking at those feet, or maybe I should call them claws, I wouldn't want one of them angry at me. They really are quite impressive. Some of their feathers are iridescent, though you can't see that from very far away. I used to encounter flocks with up to 20 birds on walks near my house.

With both birds on the ground the chicken can out move the eagle, fairly easily, in a lot of cases. Wild turkeys are the same way. The eagle's talons were not designed for running on the ground.

My turkeys and Goose Mafia fight often. However, my geese have learned that the best way to battle the turkeys is to clamp on to their long snoot on their face and either pull them to the ground or lead them around. The snoots stretch out pretty far. My poor chickens get it from both my turkeys and the Goose Mafia. One of my little bantam roosters "Pennywise" killed a hawk that was more than twice his size back in 2018. The hawk was chasing my hens but missed and looped around. Pennywise just stood out in the open like an old gunfighter keeping his eyes fixed on the hawk. The hawk quickly flew right towards him, and I thought I was about to lose my rooster. As soon as the hawk got right up to Pennywise. Pennywise launched his body right at the hawk driving his long spur into the hawk's chest. The impact made them tumble across the ground a good 10 feet. Pennywise jumped right up and ran to check on his hens. The hawk died right on the spot. Pennywise's spur must have hit an internal organ. It was the crazies thing that I have ever seen.

The turkey eating a snake worms bugs is what they supposed to be eating. They should not be eating a bunch of corn fed grains. So yes I’m not surprised a turkey did this with a snake. The problem is the farmers need to grow them and fatten them up as fast as possible for sale instead of allowing them to grease the grasses that they are supposed to. We kill so many turkeys and yet they still sit in grocery store freezers and not touched until November December
