While it's fun that wild deer have a tame reaction to these folks in their backyards, my history of interacting with wild deer is it came out of someone's backyard into the street and cost me one GMAC Denali Acadia as it flew up my hood into the windshield.

A few years ago I lived in Texas, in a rural area with a very large deer herd. They roamed all over the neighborhood, and some people put out feed for them. I would give them pieces of apples, carrots etc when I had them, but I didn't feel it was a good idea to encourage dependence on my feeding them. I had a large fenced back yard, with a rickety fence that they leapt over easily. They would quite often come to my yard, graze and lie around, relaxing; especially my back yard because it felt safer for them I think. Two deer gave birth in my yard, which was mind-blowing, and the mothers often left their babies in the high grass there while they went off to graze elsewhere. They would approach me so closely at times, my eyes teared up at the beauty of their innocence and trust; but I didn't encourage that either because I know it's best if they don't trust humans too much, but I wanted SO badly to kiss & hug them, never forget that.

My wild suburban whitetail are very discerning of human behavior..it's amazing to understand them, watch them, & see how they respond.. they are very calm and respectful, yet wary..
@cathynewyork79183 күн бұрын
You are wise to not let the deer get too comfortable with you - it could put them in danger from deer hunters, who they might walk right up to, looking for treats like other humans have given them.
@francisconti90853 күн бұрын
@cathynewyork7918 Also sets up aggressive behaviors amongst animals that are already extremely competitive..can get people hurt & deer "relocated" (euthanized) by DNR/Wildlife Control deptartments... I don't feed deer, yet I have walked alongside and worked alongside, and been embedded with a matriarchal lineage for over 40 yrs, along with other wildlife as a co-equal..they stick around longer than we do in the cafeteria..food is dangerous risk in their day, it's their work..they wolf down & scoot back to safety.. We keep best friends in life lived together, not just meals.. Deer need to eat a broader range of foods than our hands can offer anyway.. They eat better than us, inspired me to eat better!

This is really adorable❤. But one thing I can’t shake off is the fact that deer carry ticks that can spread Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. When deer come close to humans, pets, and indoor spaces, the risk of tick exposure rises significantly. Is this type of interaction safe?
