That is the Cord Mill that served The Mary Mine near Silver Peak, NV. To bad that they open pitted it. In the 1980’s I explored many of the fifty miles of workings, spending weeks in the many cabins with wood burning stoves along Mineral Ridge and at the Mary Mine. The Mary Mine Mine was built by Alexander Cord of Cord Automobile fame. The main adit had electric locomotives for haulage that Bob could easily drive through. Cord shut down the mine to support the war effort with manufacturing at his auto plant. I will never forget sitting in folding chairs outside the cabin at the head of the tram descending to the valley below. What a view of the Silver Peak Lithium Mine holding ponds in many shades of blue and green. The only lithium mine in the United States. And Gly, porphyry is not pronounced pofury.

Glad that you shared the "old workings" with we viewers and some of the bldgs. in the area. Just taking your time walking the area, but getting up to the ridge line of the ravines is exhausting. Enjoyed the panning of the scenery from your vantage point. At 19:25, what is that body of water out there? Unusual to see "water" in the dry West land. Maybe you, Mr. M, and Randy could do a Q & A before you leave for AZ. One more time......sitting around the campfire. (Mary could be included). Thouroughly enjoyed this Summer seasons video line up. You offer great camera work and exciting explores.......and some laughs.

The water is the evaporation ponds for a large lithium mine. Not going to mention the name since Gly avoided it in the video, but it's not hard to find online given what can be seen in the video. The lithium is found in the ground water, which is pumped to the surface and evaporation to allow them to collect the lithium salts for refining.

I have said this before, Randy was Rockin' the Col. J. Algernon Hawthorne explorer look with the pinned up brim of the boonie hat and bushy looking mustache. "I say, you Americans all think alike don't you?" I liked the vintage art-deco steam punk look of the steel beams from that old mill. The view from that old cabin was beyond what money could equal, truly a spiritual experience. The best of riches, health, and peace in life to you Gly, Randy, and Mr. M.

I've said it before and saying it again, your videos Gly are by far the best on You Tube. Your vast knowledge of the geology in the areas in unsurpassed. I may watch a few other mine explorers but I find they really know nothing about the area or even the geology and I cannot stick around to watch til the end. I guess I just appreciate the learning curve you put in to each of your videos. Looking forward to seeing more from you Gly and Mr M and Abandoned and Forgotten Footage. Until next time.

So it's come to this... Pimping out a half naked Randy for thirst trap videos... lol. Great video, kinda like seeing the above ground portion and learning what goes on once the ore is brought out of the ground. But what I really like, is the explanations of geological features and what old miners looked for to where to start mining in the first place. It's fun to think about what might be underground when I go on my hikes around Arizona.

Hi Gly! I just love the exploration of the old buildings! So many interesting things to see. I enjoy the fact that you never take artifacts and leave them so others can enjoy them, in situ, as well. When I lived in Eastern Utah, I used to ramble around with my kids looking for old towns and mines and enjoyed that time wondering what happened there and pointing out how things were constructed back in the old days. I encouraged my kids to explore and find things to ask about and wonder how they came to be. To this day, I know they continue to enjoy wandering around the areas where they live now and explore those areas. Thank you for the ride along!

1:30 DUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE, THAT THING LOOKS SWEEEET! And btw, all that stuff probably didn't get scrapped because it's too difficult to get to for the low value it is. Even today when I go to scrap yards iron is like 8 cents a pound. You need to bring it in by the ton and truckload and even then you will MAYBE make back the gas money you spent to get the scrap and bring it to the scrap yard lol. Google says 'steel' is currently $178 per ton.

Enjoyed this topside mining exploration through old artifacts and structures. Guess they just dumped toxic waste chemicals into nearby ravines, yuch. When you mentioned a risk of falling through the old floor into a basement, brought back to mind, you need a catch phrase to shout as you fall (hopefully, never). Maybe a Homer Simpson-like, "Doh, doh, doh,..."

Old 2x4 buildings, the upright 2x4 spacing is not 16 inch centers but 24 inches and they were actual 2x4s even 3x4s to give strength for the 24 inch spacing. Here is some copy/past, When planed 2 x4 studs first came into use they were 1 5/8 by 3 5/8 they switched to the current size sometime after the early 1950's, . Other tips on age. The modern round wire nails began replacing square cut nails shortly before 1900. Between 1850 an 1870 sawmills retooled from up and down saws to circular saw. So check your rough sawn boards. Up and down saws leave straight lines nearly perpendicular to the board. The marks of a larger circular saw will look nearly straight on a small board but will run across at a noticeable angle.. The interior boards may have been an experiment in putting the sheathing on the interior so it could double as lath. with the additional lath and plaster added after they had trouble wit the plaster sticking. Or could your house have been converted from a carriage house? Rough sawn boards would have been a common interior finish for such a building.

Thank you very much for this very interesting and informative video presentation. The cellphone did very well to record this fascinating place. When you were talking about how artifacts were left, certainly, where I live the authorities insist that places are 'tidied up' after they have finished with the area which means that the current set up is that there is little or no sign of what went on before which will make things rather boring for people in the future. Thanks again for bringing to us this important historical record.

“Gly”: Hi Doc. All the mines in that area have been destroyed by open pit operations and the ones that haven’t yet have been bulldozed shut. It seems that MSHA made the new owners secure the entire site before operations could begin. The mill most likely sits on low grade ground so it will probably remain there indefinitely. Hope your feeling better. Take care!

from Randy: Gly does have a very high quality shortwave UV flashlight but he usually just has it on his equipment vest showing off like Buzz Lightyear. I'll snatch it away from him and seek out fluorescent minerals from time to time. Usually there are always little bits and stains on the mine walls as shown in episode 117 about 33:25 about but no significant minerals worth collecting. Yet. Even last year this time searching a tungsten mine in hopes of some nice pieces of scheelite came up empty handed. I keep telling Gly we need to explore a fluorite mine!
