Should the slips be covered with shade cloth? I planted three this morning and thoroughly watered them and they appeared quite wilted around 1. I did add some shade cloth and another good watering; two out of three look pretty good. One is questionable.

@@MD-bp8vb that’s not really necessary. Mine always look really rough the first couple days I’ve put them in. Just baby them really well for a couple more days and then they should bounce back.

One slip should make about 4-6 potatoes and you can still start them now to get a harvest before Christmas

I'm at the very south of Hillsborough county and have been binging your channel in hopes of curing my black thumb. I just ordered one of the steel beds off of Amazon that you recommend and I'm planning to give sweet potatoes a go. Do you use one entire bed for the sweet potatoes or are you able to plant anything else in the same bed?

You can definitely plant other things with the sweet potatoes. Aim for a taller plant that can hover above the sweet potato leaves. I grew a to of zinnias and beans with my sweet potatoes last year

It's the end of May here in West Pasco County, Florida on the Pinellas line. Is it too late to go to Publix and get my organic sweet potato to start my slips?

No, it’s not too late. You may not have sweet potatoes by Thanksgiving but you should have some in time for Christmas.

Thanks so much! More than likely they should. I imagine if you planted them in September, they were pretty big. Don’t trim them or anything. Just leave them be. They will either recover or resprout. If they regrow and then we get another hit like this week you may have a smaller yield or loss. Fingers crossed 🤞

I start creating my slips in February. It can take 4-6 weeks for them to be big enough. Then I immediately plant them which ends up starting in April and I keep planting till end of May or whenever the potatoes stop making slips.

Great video - tons of useful information. Have you grown any of the white-flesh sweet potatoes? I've heard that they're quite good substitutes for gardening disadvantages like ours. I have never seen one. Thank you for sharing your work.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I have seen those potatoes but haven’t tried growing them yet. I usually grow the traditional orange and the Japanese purple. I suspect they would do well here since so many other varieties do. I might give them a shot next summer.

How far apart you plant your slips?

I like to give them 1 square foot each. Gives them plenty of room to grow big

@@burself8105 probably 2 for each bag would be good. The potatoes get pretty big the longer you leave them so I like to give them extra space. If you have a shorter window to grow, then do 3 and you will just have smaller potatoes but more of them.
