Phly, I'm sure someone has already mentioned it, but I couldn't find it in my initial comment scroll. The M2 was designed as an infantry support tank, hence the 4.7 billion machineguns. The two on the outer turret ARE in fact on pivoting mounts, they're simply locked into their travel position in-game. The intent is that an enterprising infantryman can climb onto the outside of the tank in order to better direct the tank commander's attention, and at the same time utilize the mounted gun simply by removing a quick-disconnect pin that would free that back end of the receiver from it's mount and then allow then gun to rotate around the pintle mount under the forward end of the receiver. This tank was designed under the Jingles principle of "Throw enough shit at the wall, eventually some will stick". Also, Warthunder fucked it up. The M2 only carried 12, 250 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition with 200 rounds for the main gun.

Phly, the two machine guns on the top were designed to be used as anti-aircraft weapons. A feature that was available, but not necessarily used on all of the production tanks. Also, fun fact, the M2 Medium never saw combat and was only used stateside for training exercises due to a realization that it was inadequate in comparison to the German armor of the time.

Those MG's on the side of the turret were meant for AA protection. I've seen a picture of a crewman standing in one of the hatches to the side of the turret and aiming the MG. It seems like Ordnance suddenly realized they needed AA defense and this was the best they could come up with.

The top mounted mgs are for a specific but essential reason : if while on the battlefield you happen not to be recognized as American, you just open fire and advance with a pair of horns made by a continuous stream of tracers. That way you are not mistaken for anything but American. A very essential feature at the time

the top machine guns are anti-air. You pull the pin on the rear mount to swing the bottom down with the barrel up. Your angle of fire is if youre on the left side of the tank you fire over the right and vice versa. The hatch to the tank is below them. Open them up, pull the pin, lower down to bring the barrel up and fire. Thought they dont do that in War Thunder.

They would probably be used by accompanying infantry. It looks like they are mounted in a static mount but they have pindles for a tripod system. My guess is the infantry that would be supporting this tank would be carrying the tripods and kit for these guns and when needed they can just grab them to set up a base of fire. The tank crew may even be expected to use them when dismounted. Mobile infantry are sometimes issued multiple machine guns per person due to vehicle mounted guns staying in the vehicle and needing guns for dismounted ops. At one time I actually had three different machine guns signed out to me in Iraq for this reason. One for a guard post, one for the truck and one for me.

They reminded me of the M3 driver aimed machineguns when it was first introduced that were found to be pointless but they at least had tripods in the tank so infantry/crew could used them dismounted. The American tanks has one of the most tanks with more than 2 machine guns. The other tanks from other nations like the Soviet Union or the UK Had combat tanks that had mostly 2 mounted on the hull or turret. On the front hull, Cupla, Gun mantelet or the back of the turret. Here a small list with tanks that carried more than 2 Machine guns. - T6E1 (5 Machine guns) - M4 Early model (5 Machine guns) - M2 Medium (9 Combatready) - T7 Combat car (3 Machine guns) - Someone!? any others that I have mabye forgotten?

M2: 7 machine guns and a 37mm smooth bore musket. The US reserve tank M2A4 carries 24,000 machine gun rounds for 5 working machine guns, and there's even less space to hold ammo in that thing. 5,250 rounds for 4 of the guns, at 600 rounds per minute that's a solid 8 minutes and 45 seconds of machine gun time

They are extra barrels for the machine gun. It is possible to overheat the barrel of the machine causing it to deform and become inoperable. The army still carries around extra barrels for the 249 and 240Bs, just Incase.
