"Acceleration will get you up things, speed will slam you into things" Chris Birch during a clinic. This is good stuff Rich! If you break an obstacle down into 3rds, a majority of the work is being done in that first 3rd, ideally you're coasting through the last 3rd.

I know I'm late to the party, however, I wanted to take the time to say how much I appreciate these videos - I've learned so much from this, because Rich L. is a man that can forget more than most will ever know about their dirt bikes...That's why I now have TWO dance partners now(a 2t, and 4t), and I try to learn more about them every day...I'm attached to these bikes, and will not ever be letting them go! -Almost my only friends, and that's huge for a veteran who's been ate up with mental and physical health problems! My depression, PTSD, TBI, opiate addiction from injuries/prescribed meds, and immense grief would have got the best of me and ended my life if not for dirt bikes...So, I SINCERELY thank you! I will commit to buying MANY IRC products just because of how much you've invested in me and other riders -We are all very thankful, and will not be forgetting!

Thank you Rich. I’ve been riding ADV bikes for 3 years now, dropping it on steep undulating climbs losing momentum whilst slowing down for obstacles. Now I have the solution thanks to you!

Student rider here. One of my motorcycle instructors told me "the problem is that you are trying to understand it. You should just FEEL it". Perfect example for when someone himself doesn't understand something while teaching it. Thank you very much for the clear explanation, it was perfectly understandable what is happening in the bike and why it would behave in a specific way. I'm checking your Essential Riding Tips playlist! And I'm hoping you would create videos for beginner riders in general, too.

Rich, you taught me this technique in a group training last fall and it has changed my riding forever. I'd love to see an explanation on the channel of how to load the flywheel continuously for hill climbs. I have a video of you doing that on an insane hill with no run up to it. Thanks for the videos!

This is great! I noticed my riding *sounded* different from other more advanced riders (they seemingly had higher rev blips while I was low rpm and bogged souding), and this is absolutely why. I've always had a natural fear over overusing the clutch, but I guess its there to be used.

This video definitely gives me an idea of how to start practicing the timing it requires to load and unload the flywheel…I was unsure how to practice this without trying it on obstacles. Also gives me a better upstanding of how much better I need to understand what my machine is doing to do this.

I've always thought reving in a friction zone wears/glasses the clutch plates so I've always tried to keep the clutch free to engaged smoothly but quickly.
@clawabidingcitizen3 жыл бұрын
Two reasons to not be concerned: It's designed to wear. That's okay. And second, wet clutches are well protected against this kind of wear.

one thing you miss: combustion engines make torque only during ignition tact. For 2T engines this is ~half of time, for 4T - 1/4 . This is high freq pulse (e.g. 6k rpm = 100 hz 2T and 50hz for 4T) but that time is enough to lose tire traction during pulses. For 4T moto things get even worse - you have much stronger torque pulse and engine decel during compression stage. This is also the main reason engines have massive flywheel, it smooths this a little. Anyone can feel that pulses trying to ride with clutch engaged on very low rpm (near idle). But slipping with the clutch you can always have enough torque to move and throw out excess torque avoiding tire micro slip. Every tire slip begins from micro tire slip, you know... :)
