Unlike this video suggests, the IRL rock band Togenashi Togeari is actually in a bit of trouble. Two members, drummer Subaru (Mirei) and synth girl Tomo (Natsu) have been on lasting hiatus, allegedly for medical reasons, since early summer 2024. It's unknown if and when they'd return, so the band plays live performances with substitutes, e.g. the regular keyboard support player for Yoasobi duo performed during the 20 Dec 2024 TogeToge concert. Vocalist Nina (Rina), lead guitar Momoka (Yuri) and bassist Rupa (Shuri) are still active though. A new audition process was advertised for the future mobile game adaptation, so maybe it will feature a different band besides / instead of TogeToge, but I'm skeptical if fans would accept such "bandorization" franchising of Girls Band Cry / Garukura.

I don't think there would be a backlash since theres a huge overlap with bandori fanbase, as long as they keep all out supporting the original band. I'm not too worried about the missing band members since the existing members still talk about and joke about them which would be very weird if they were about to be kicked out. They are also extremely reliant on them for voice acting reasons.

I hope a 2nd season and more music will happen, with the same members. I watched this anime out of simple curiosity (I'm usually not a big fan of 3DCG, but the render in this one looked neat and smooth), but in the end, it was very refreshing and pretty much all of the songs were particularly well done.

For Toge Toge's most recent performance on Countdown Japan 24-25, they actually had Tamu Murata from all-female metal band Nemophila perform as their support drummer. Mirei & Natsu's extended medical absences due to 'poor health' since July is somewhat troubling, both from the perspective of genuine concern for their well being and also if they don't return then that could partially jeopardize production of a second season.
@tinbapakk
@tinbapakk 11 күн бұрын
Yep, what's concerning, except their health of course, is the fact that they're not just a band from an anime. They're also seiyuus. I have no worries about the fact that they can replace band members, temporarily or not (and Nemophila is great, even if I prefer their earlier work). But replacing the seiyuus, well... :|

Most underappreciatedanime anime of 2024 in my opinion. Watched it through "other services" when it first premiered back in April and loved it. Glad that it is on Crunchyroll now so that more people can view this great show. Hoping the band can come to the west to do a performance one of these days.

> Glad that it is on Crunchyroll now so that more people can view this great show. Regrettably, people are NOT watching Girls Band Cry on Crunchyroll. It had just 1989 viewers rating as of this morning, compared with 56000 for Bocchi the Rock of ugly animation and 1-dimensional characters. Many think Sony (which owns CR) is trying to suppress Toei, which being one of the larger and older anime studios, wants to negotiate on equal terms.

@@etomcat are you... are you calling Bocchi's animation ugly? If anything, most of people think that 3D animation is. GBCB wasn't very good, IMO. Too cringey, and the music in Bocchi is better. Bocchi is made with love in mind, this made as a pormotional gig.
@catanaoni
@catanaoni 17 күн бұрын
@@Zysperro no shot, the 3d animation and style were really good, and the characters and their stories were actually decent. Biggest flaws it had would be that it didn't keep up the animation quality 100% of the time for everything, and the final act was kinda anti-climactic. I'm not sure what you found cringe, but 90% of the time cringing is an invitation to look inward, not out. Bocchi is amazing tho, idk what that other guy is on about, tribalism at its finest. Bocchi's characters are indeed kinda flat, but that was never its claim to greatness anyway.
@izzyyheree
@izzyyheree 14 күн бұрын
@@Zysperro Both are very good animes, shut the fuck up please. Also, promotional gig? How the hell can you consider an anime that has a ton of things that make it not appealing to the mainstream be purely made to get popular? For one, like you said, it's 3D. That along should make it VERY obvious that they did not care whether or not it got popular. Both are made for the love the content, and both have very passionate writers. I don't get why were comparing these two animes that both have tons of love poured into their characters.

Unlike the video says at 0:16, actually none of Girls Band Cry's main chara are high-schoolers. Nina, Hina and Tomo dropped out of school system entirely, while Subaru attends an acting school which doesn't provide matriculation exam, thus she won't be able to go to college. Rupa, Momoka and her ex-Diamond Dust bandmates are all working adults. Script writer Jukki Hanada (of Steins Gate and YoriMoi fame) expressly stated in press interview that he wanted to write GBC outside of the idyllic world of school clubs.

so someone took unexperienced VAs, focused on a complicated multi-media marketing starting from ground up, decided on a non-typical plot for a show in its genre, chose a completely unconventional animation-style and STILL came out with such a banger? that is srsly so cool. My favorite anime of the year too.

Bit of a trivia: Girs Band Cry anime was internally titled "Project Alnair" during development, which is the name of a star. Members of the opposing idol-rock band "New Diamond Dust" wear leggings on stage decorated with a stellar constellation motif.

The writing was really good too. Lots of little things that stay true to the character making them feel real without exposition. For example rupa is always happy and loves the banter because of her backstory, lots of things she says revolves around that. The car scene as well. There were 3+ meanings behind the words so it really made sense on how the episode ended. Don't want too much spoilers, but the lyrics of momokas song, younger momoka to current momoka, Nina to momoka despite current momoka feeling the way she did.

I can't recommend enough listening to their two albums (aptly titled Togenashi and Togeari), because there are some really striking songs in there (Hurtful and Painful, Underneath, Answer to Extreme, to name a few) that aren't in the show; and ALSO to watch their music videos for the songs that have one. Here is the playlist for that, which starts with the songs inserted in the anime and the corresponding anime clips, but that also has half a dozen more: kzbin.info/aero/PL0o9aWyhb7ocxwDBYhzukikXmlB7SwXgm They have translated lyrics and some cool/intense MVs there, and it really adds extra layers to the series. Special mention to the MV for Hurtful and Painful, really.

The only mistake Toei Animation made is not releasing Girls Band Cry outside of Japan. It is the Anime of the Year for me, and I only stumbled after hearing one of their music but it DIDN'T make me wanna watch it instantly at first. Until my KZbin recommendations popped up some GBC clips and other songs with at least 11 considerations. I couldn't get the thought out of my head so I'll just give the first episode a try (it's just a band anime how can it be good right?) at that time everyone was praising the anime but I watched Bocchi the Rock and thought it was JUST NICE nothing special. I was wrong, it has some of the best drama writing and character developments. It didn't feel like a band anime but more like a coming of age story. I'm glad I gave it a try and although it's not popular I'm a proud Toge toge fan.

Not gonna go review the interviews again but I'm pretty sure the auditions were exclusively focused on music ability and they simply struggled to find people good enough, The name togenashi togeari is also a reference to a tv program of the same name Togenashi Togeari is definitely way more than just an anime band, during the 3rd one man they straight out made it clear they werent going to do anime related acts, so aside from a few references and anime images on screen the band carried itself through that live. Even if most fans find the band through the anime the band members also do a lot of activies, being active on social media, interviews, livestreams and radioshows, there was also a couple game streams. The bigger appeal of togenashi togeari is definitely when you get to know the members personalities and not just knowing them as the person who voices your favorite character, and you end up rooting for and being amazed by them on stage.

I remember seeing promotional stuff before the anime came out and I was really interested since I loved band anime like Bocchi and K-On, I was even more interested when I saw that it would be made in 3D which I know doesnt have the best rep but I thought it looked amazing. Of course when it finally came out and I watched the anime when it was releasing, I was actually so surprised how right I was when I said it would looked good. The music was good, the animation looked super good even in 3D, the story was good, the characters were really fun to watch yell at each other, and so many other things. I still listen to their songs to this day and the thing that got me hooked was the fact that it felt a bit more mature than Bocchi and K-On. Unlike Bocchi and K-On, it doesnt have that "moe anime girl" feel to it which is such a refresher honestly, I love how they each have their own problems that make them angry, compared to Bocchi's depressing songs and K-On's light-heart uplifting songs, they feel like a typical rock band who are playing music to let their anger out which is amazing.

> call MyGO a "come and gone" thing MyGo and the whole BangDream / Bandori franchise has a very obviously manufactured, forced drama recipe, tastes like processed food. Upcoming sequel Ave Mujica turns that up to 11. The 3D-CGI animation in MyGo is also very uncanny: characters look like zombies made out of glass and move accordingly, totally stilted. It can't hold a candle to the level of storywriting, the variety of facial expressions and bouncingly lively CGI animation of both comedy and drama as found in Girls Band Cry.

Girl bands in Japan is really a thing, and some of these have what I could call world class musicians. Recommendations: -Band-Maid has been a thing since 2013, and of all things they broke through internationally first. Started as a pop-punk oriented, but has during the years blended more hard-rock, jazz, alternative etc Has developed into a very good live band, and sell out overseas. Songs: "Blooming" and "Daydreaming". -Scandal: is world oldest band in the sense that they still after nearly 20 years got the same members. They are more of a rock/pop-punk. song: Syoujo S -NEK!(neki) is quite new and was formed last year. Got some attention because their bassist did attend an audition for an other female band (Lovebites) in 2022. Then she was 15 and reached quite far. song: Maze -Hanabie was formed when the girls were at college and inspired by the Maximum The Hormone, which is one of the most legendary extreme-metal bands in Japan. They have become a hit overseas with their enigmatic liveperformances. And gets invited quite frequently to metal-festivals. song: Otaku Lovely Densetsu. -Lovebites: plays western classic thrash, power and melodious metal better than most western. Fantastic band and musicians, One of my favourite guitar-duos. Songs: "When destinies align" and "Empty daydream" -Nemophila: songs: "Ama-te-ras" and "Life"

Thank you so much for this video and all the explanatory elements it puts together so well! I feel like it made me learn a lot in 8 minutes and was very efficient. I knew the VAs were making their debut both as VAs and musicians, but I didn't know the details, and it's fascinating! (wow Tomo's VA Natsu being into piano from her mother, this mirrors Tomo's own emotional baggage we get hints at somehow...) (I didn't know where the band's name came from either, and I was wondering, so thanks for answering that, too!) Overall, each time I think back on how they are rookie VAs, I get absolutely amazed - seriously, some of Nina's monologues for instance crush me and bring me to tears instantly from how raw they sound. I also hope for more TogeToge content indeed - I'm a bit worried as Mirei and Natsu had to take a break for health reasons for a while recently, but I wish for their recovery, and I sure wish them the best. Oh, and thank you for gathering other interesting videos on the same topic in your description - sharing some you liked tackling different angles is a great thing! Also, simply, thank you again: I'm sure I'll send this video to people alongside GBC itself to give them more context, becaude all these details really make me love this series even more.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed! I had no clue about all this stuff before making this video.. I finished watching in 2 days and was like I need to make a video about GBC. Was surprised at how much lore there was, I hope the anime and band get more attention 🙏

Painful animation compared to previously impressive 3D titles such as Hoseki no Kuni or even Ajin, and the plot isn't exactly revolutionary even if it is executed well. This show is definitely not in the running for best anime of 2024. Compared to shows like Frieren, which stradled 2023-2024, Solo Leveling, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto which also stradled 2023-2024, Kaijuu 8-gou, Wind Breaker, Roshidere, Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria, Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!, Giji Harem, Dandadan, and honestly Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai. All of these shows came out this year, or did a aired for the first few months of the year. I would say that Girls Band Cry probably performs well in its niche, but it is by no means clawing its way to the top of the list of shows I mentioned, unless you're a hardcore music fan who happens to watch anime. I do love music by the way, and I have watched music anime in the past. I am however particular about the use of 3D animation, and that would be my bias. I will say that Toei is likely close to reaching the point where I don't find 3D animation objectionable.

The writing (subtle included) and themes+execution in gbc clears every anime of 2024 with probably only season 2 of dangers in my heart competing. Most of what you listed are just cringe tropes I don't bother watching anime after like 10+ years of watching anime. The animation isn't bad. I have both Houseki and gbc downloaded on my PC that I watch from time to time. I liked frieren but it's really not that good as a seasonal anime for Anime of the year. sure when it all comes together it might be good. 24 EP of "I miss himel" literally frieren didn't change at all from like EP 3, fern is cute sure but she doesn't change either, they neglect stark most of the show.

Calling Girls Band Cry the best anime of 2024 is quite an exaggeration. Granted, the animation was slick and TOGENASHITOGEARI's music is good, but the anime's story is all over the place and is mediocre at best and tone deaf (yeah, that's a bit of irony) at worst. This is especially apparent in the way they handled the Nina-Hina subplot. The storytelling was stilted, the messaging was alarmingly wrong, and the ending was so rushed packed with forced reconcilations that it really left a bad taste in my mouth. On top of all that, even calling this the best in the genre is hyperbole because this year had It's My Go.

"Best Anime" 💀 Hell Naw. It was 6-7/10 at best. Only thing good about the series was their Band Songs.
