This Temporary Cycle Path is Too Narrow for a Velomobile

Here's ten minutes of complaining about roadwork and how they made a cyclepath on my commuting route too narrow for velomobiles.

At least they tried. After your first complaint they made a ramp and later on they put the cable in the air. I can imagine they never thought about a Velomobile using the detour. And when they've widened the detour cycle path and see you crossing the bridge between the cars .... ;-)

2:00 those speed bumps.... i once cycled over them with my folding bike going around 30 km/h and i had one hand on the steer and it was dark and i flew over it but lucky i didnt fall. but my wheels came loose from the ground and on purpose i dont even dare to try it.

you should get all your velomobile mates to turn up and do a 'go slow' convoy through the roadworks/so called cycle path video the clusterfuck and send it to some politicians/councillors........

LOL they recently changed the law in Belgium, mainly because of the rising popularity of velomobiles who prefer to use the road over the bicycle lanes. With the new law all cycles (with 2, 3 or 4 wheels) who are less than 1meter large have to use the bicycle lane if there is one available. Yet I know many bicycle lanes where it is impossible to go with a 1 meter large vehicle, let alone cross with another 1 meter large vehicle. Personally I will keep using the road since going >45km/h on a bicycle lane is often too dangerous.

rising popularity of velomobiles?? i think it's rising popularity of insane speed pedelecs drivers... normal cyclists doing 25 isn't fast enough. just overtake from the right side on the walking paths it is. nearly hitting a normal person just walking there... happens 2-3 times a day.

You’d love it in England, Saudi: nearly all our bike lanes look like this most of the time. Very few bike paths that aren’t part of the main car road are usable by a Quest, I’ve found.

Even in Finland cars are king. In the USA we have to fight and claw to get paths made. Many bike lanes on streets are made for uprights and aren't wide enough for trikes and velos. Most have no protection except for painted lines. Many access gates are too narrow for trikes and velos. Holland has it right. The rest of the world has to develop the brains to follow the Dutch model. It'll be tough in the USA where Big Oil owns the government.

@@TheVelomobileChannel Well we have a "leader" who says climate change is a hoax, so... I'm sure you're seeing the effects in Finland just as we are here. I'm a Colorado native, and weather patterns (climate) have changed greatly since I was a boy. I'm 61 btw.

I have this also often with my quest, too narrow lanes, gets the velomobile damaged or not?. But your quest is much more beautiful as mine. So a shame to damage it. Btw your T-shirts fit very well!.

I have also a problem at the moment. I can ride another way. But they are working on the road here. I can ride with my wider trike. But it it not possible with my Quattrovelo. I need too ride on the road with it because of all sherp turns and different layers of asphalt. So they making also stupid high bumps. The asphalt scretches the underside of my velo. Why they always look for the cars and never care about cyclists. Thanks for this video again. It shows how stupid people thinking only about cars.

It would work fine for all normal cycles & most recumbent bikes as well. Your Velo is, a rather special case.

plunder1956 a wheelchair would need the same width of the pass as the Quest. Every pass should be wide enough for a wheelchair. It is a legitimste request at least.

To be honest: you havn't got a traffic problem! Asked John the London guy what traffic is about. Or come to Germany. You are very lucky to find a guy who takes care about your issues. Amazing! They optimized the cable management. This won't become real in Germany! But the car driving idiots are the Same all over the world

How long is the bridge? The use of the bike path as a detour for autos is ok but an awful lot of it is being used. More than is necessary.

I think it's something between 100 - 200 meters. They didn't have enough money to build temporary bridge for cars. Yes they could have left some more space for cyclists.

well.... they tried with the cable and stuff. but couldn't they just remove the entire stupid plastic fence? 🤔 even hitting those stupid footblocks with a regular bicycle is life threatening on a bridge...

The fence is much safer for kids, so it doesn’t make sense to remove it. There is a school close to that bridge.

No consideration at all. The cars have only one person each and thus have great capacity elasticity, and yet they prioritise a crap tonne of even more space to them! Here in Auckland, road workers break work Health & Safety practices like the road works site is just some random place, not their work site. They just place signs right in the middle of unprotected bike lanes and shared-paths (causing pinch points, especially on sharedpaths.). They have these signs that clamp onto lamp-posts, yet they go this way! When WorkSafe (our work safety organisation) is contacted about these practices, they just shrug. Also technically isn't this a shared-path for cyclists and pedestrians?
