You know Ped means pedals right? All mopeds have pedals, that's why they're peds and not scooters. 👍 I think the legal difference between an electric motorized bicycle and a moped is the power of the motor. High-power ebikes are probably classified as mopeds in some states. The frame type doesn't matter.

Along with the legal differences, one practical difference is that you're a lot less likely to get complaints about being on trails if you have pedals. Try riding a scoote/moto on a trail in Colorado, every person you pass will instruct you to get off the trail. Pedal by and for some reason they don't mind.

The video's title is a "contradiction", because 'mopeds' ALWAYS have pedals. Moped means, literally, "motorized pedal".

@@greenwave819 For anything called a "moped", I would assume it's true. After all, in the origin of mopeds, 'mo' was for 'motor', and 'ped' was for 'pedal'. Otherwise, it's a "scooter". In mopeds, 'pedal' has two meanings. It can have the traditional meaning of pedals, like a bicycle (which is what all the original mopeds had)...or, it can use a pedal similar to a car/truck for acceleration. In either case, it's still a pedal...meaning, acceleration is NOT a handlebar-mounted throttle. As a final note, for mopeds having bicycle-style pedals, none that I've ever been aware of (including r moped I had back in the early 80s, before I got my first motorcycle) required using the pedals. The pedals are, essentially, a "back-up" propulsion method, in case one ran out of fuel. Mine, being a slightly lower-end moped, didn't have an electric start, so pedaling for the first 10-20 feet what's required to start the motor.

@@Lykoloo Officially, the Yamaha Chappy was marketed as a "mini bike for women", and the Honda Express was marketed as a scooter. As for the Suzuki FA50, although it was 'marketed' as a moped, by the definition of "moped", it was still, technically, a scooter (ie. acceleration controlled by a handlebar-mounted throttle). If you read up on the history, when the FA50 was released, scooters were just starting to hit the market, and 'moped' was a far more common name. As a marketing executive, it would have made sense to call it by a name more familiar (ie. 'moped') to most people. As unfamiliar as 'scooter' was, and for something that physically resembled a moped, if your job (marketing executive) is to label a product, and you want to have the company sell as many units as possible, are you going to classify it under a vehicle-type name that is unfamiliar to people, or a vehicle-type name that people are extremely familiar with? For a related comparison, when motorcycles first came out, they were not called a "motorcycle", or even a "motor bike"...they were called a "riding car" (Reitwagen, in German). Were they a 'car '? Not all all. But, the term 'car' was one that people were extremely familiar with.
