Love my Quilter 202. I put a Parametric EQ and compressor in the FX Loop (can dial in and get rid of those "cold mids" you were talking about). It then gives me far more EQ control and I also set the LIMITER (instead of using the compressor) on around 3 (smooths things out). The para made a big difference in getting the exact sound I wanted. I run a CCK Honey Scream (boost and light gain) into a Marshall Jackhammer and Sinvertek N5 3D and it for sure does everything I want it too (cleans, mild, heavy). You should try running a basic compressor ( I use a modded Dyna Comp M102) in the loop and you can achieve a SAG like effect if you don't go overboard which might be something desired to give you more of a "tube amp" feel. Can't tell you enough how much I enjoy the Quilter as well. The cleans are fantastic and it's an awesome pedal platform. Enjoyed this!

I have a Toneblock 200 which came before the 202. It only has a Gain, Tone & Wattage controls and no FX Loop or character switches. It’s louder than all get out. Plenty of headroom. I used it for a long time to power my Axe FX II instead of using the power section of my ‘94 5150. My biggest complaint is that I feel there is some bass roll off in the preamp.

Quilter ToneBlock 202 is fantastic! It's my main gigging amp these days as it's incredibly lightweight and is more than loud enough for most gigging situations. I've only had two real issues with it and other gear. 1- The EVH 5150 pedal from MXR Sounds really bad through this amp (think late 2000's Line6 insane channel). 2- For single coil guitars it has WAY too much bass and can really muddy up your live sound without some kind of low cut/eq in the signal chain.

I bought a UK Cub, for gigging, since we no longer have a crew and it's much easier to haul than my Marshalls. We A/Bd it against my main head, and while it of course doesn't have quite the grunt of a 4x12, it's shockingly close. And it's louder than Hell- I barely have the volume up, and it more than keeps up with my VERY loud drummer.

@AlikaMadis9 ай бұрын
Interesting that you ran the preamp into the front of the Quilter, because you can also just run it through the FX return, so you can bypass the preamp on the Quilter and just use it as a power amp. That way you're not running a preamp into another preamp. You do get an extra set of EQ controls if you run it through the front, so that's cool, but it's hard to avoid coloring from the second preamp. Is there a reason why you went into the front instead of the loop? I'm asking because I always run my preamps through my Quilter Overdrive 202 into the FX return...
@djabthrash9 ай бұрын
It puzzles me that they didn't add controls for that poweramp section, like "presence", "depth/resonance", etc
@AlikaMadis9 ай бұрын
@@djabthrash Yes. That would have been nice. That's one of the reasons why I use a separate preamp through the return instead of the preamp itself. On its own, it sounds really good, but it doesn't have enough control if you're planning on using different bottoms/speakers. As a gigging musician, you don't always know what bottom you're getting on backline especially when on tour. So presence and depth are particularly useful in those circumstances. I think they decided to leave those controls off to save more space and make it super small and light (which it is). However, it is definitely a compromise.

The Orange Pedal Baby 100 is another similarly suited item, though it doesn't have an effects loop, and it's just a clean preamp and class A/B power amp. TBH I recently bought an Orange Super Crush 100 and it sounds a lot better to put preamp pedals in the FX loop on the clean channel, with your overdrive going into the front input of the amp. I have a Joyo Oxford Sound, and it surprised me, how similar the preamp pedal and the amp's actual high gain preamp sound.
