Looks fantastic! We're also going with sw shoji white walls, but with white dove trim which is also pretty bright white! I think a white or wood color garage door would look great on your home. Our exterior will be quarry gray with black trim, black front and garage doors. My wife didn't want a white exterior again because it has to be cleaned often - our current home is very white and we clean it spring and fall.

We thought about white vinyl siding so we could pressure wash it, but decided we'll deal with the maintenance. Maybe make a video in a year....Don't Build A White House!! Thanks for watching.

4:25 Cabot oil does come in a variety of tints. It's a great product, but pine can be finicky.

I think you will never regret the white. I painted what had been my dad's house 24 years ago and it still looks good. Black garage door and real hurricane shutters.

Hello Brad and Deb. Greetings from central Alberta. Yesterday, I had a chat with a man who installs garage doors. He told me that the heat of the sun will warp a black door, especially if it faces south or west. The metal on the outer skin expands while the inside remains cooler, so it doesn't expand at the same rate. This tension causes the door to bow or twist. The sun also fades the colour. The house looks great. The snow was very pretty. Jim

I highly advise against a black door if it is directly facing the sun. While living in NC we had a black front door that faced due west and it got so freaking hot that you couldn't touch it.

I painted my garage doors black - for one day -I painted them white the next day. I did not like the look of such a large amount of black paint.

We used Hardie board when we built our forever house in 2007. First house I had ever had built also but we didn’t have too many setbacks. I noticed they caulked the board end gaps in the middle of the run which our contractor did not. I’m wondering if the future expansion/contraction of the boards will crack those caulk joints.

They are supposed to be caulked but I have seen on the other house on the farm that it will crack. I guess nothing is permanent.....even concrete siding. Thanks for watching.

I’m currently in the early stages of building. I’m really confused on windows and R values. Can you share any information on windows and price points. I’ve noticed a standard size Pella window is almost $1,000.00 - I assume you are like me and want to fall somewhere is the middle.

Anderson is the "best" or at least the most expensive. Pella has good windows too. Ours are non-name brand "low e" windows from the lumber supply store. If they fog, you buy replacement windows. Our exterior window budget was $7200 for this house....and non of our windows are custom size. Standard size.

The only challenge I see with a white country house will be keeping it clean. If I've learned anything from living on a rural property its that it's nearly impossible to keep the home clean. With acres of dirt surrounding the house, dirt finds it's way everywhere. Hopefully, you'all have a good pressure washer to help keep the exterior walls of your dream home clean.

I recommend against adding anything black to your house. The sun will reduce the lifespan of everything black in your climate. Too late on the shingle selection but I wouldn’t carry that to anywhere else. In 7-8 years, you will need a new roof, as it is. The white looks good. Earth tones will accent better than black.

@mcchupka9718 I won’t argue that black shingles absorb more heat and might have a slightly shorter lifespan, but I think you're being a bit too pessimistic. If I recall correctly, they used 'lifetime' architectural shingles, which are designed to last decades. Modern shingles also have UV-resistant coatings that help protect against sun damage. It’s hard to believe they would only last 7-8 years-I'd bet they’ll hold up for at least 30 years with proper installation and ventilation.

I hear what you're saying, but we've talked to A LOT of contractors over the last 7 years and very few people want to show up and put in an honest day's work. Not saying that's the case with you, but reliable labor is a problem in construction. These guys are reliable. Thanks for watching.
