I am an old man now, but I went from nothing, trained myself exactly with this, ball and a wall, started playing in recreational leagues and almost signed an amateur contract in the span of 6 years. I never went forward because of a knee injury, but I agree 100%. Ball and a wall, I never thought of it at the time because I didn't have anything else, but this is exactly what I did. Well done

From being the one no one wanted to pick to becoming a solid player in just three weeks, here’s a simple training drill I do each week to improve my skills: -Pass the ball to the wall: 40 mins x 2 (two-touch pass, one-touch pass with both legs) -HIIT Training: sprint + jog + sprint + walk (pitch lines) for 1 session -Simple dribbling: 1 session At home, I focus on improving my foot strength, ankle lock strength, ankle mobility ,and sprinting form every day. Specially, I never skip a “pass the ball to the wall” session because I see it’s the best way to improve my first touch and passing skills and those are essential in every match. In a 90-minute game, you might only touch the ball 50-100 times, but you can achieve this in just 10 minutes of passing to the wall.

I bought a 5x7 rebounder off Amazon a few months ago and I’ve been using it in my back yard daily. Has helped me tremendously. I’ll also drop 4 cones down about 15 feet away from the rebounder, allowing me to trap the ball out of the air, dribble thru a couple cones and send it back to the rebounder. Has added another dimension to my training.

It’s not about over complicating it with cone agility drills. It’s because the wall never gets tired and gives you an excellent first touch which is priceless in real game situations. Agility drills can serve a purpose but there is a reason the Dutch teach kids to practice on a wall

I read an article a long time ago that said during halftime, while other players were resting in the locker room, Pele was juggling a ball off the wall of the tunnel to stay sharp and stay warmed up. Not sure if that's true, but it does sound like something the King would do. His control of the ball was miles ahead of anyone, and that's probably because he played football everywhere non-stop and was incredibly driven.

As a kid, I used to kick a football against a wall every day as soon as I came home from school. I only reached semi pro level, but this technique definitely improved my first touch and also the ability to kill the ball especially when defending in the penalty box.

This KZbinr is partially correct. You cant just use the wall for practice and be well off. Wall just returns the ball fast thus giving you more practice within given time. Yes its gona improve your reaction and such but to fully make sense of this kinda work out is that 1st you need to mark spots on the wall aka targets, and trying to hit those targets. This will improve your aiming, and kicking the ball in the right direction. 2nd you need to start from short distance from the wall to far distance. This will help with control on your passes. Other than that id use smaller ball to practice against the wall. Then i would care if im gona practice bare foot or not.

I remember I used to play for a youth team in my city (we won several city championships) and one summer I thought, I’m gonna improve my left foot, so when I get back from my vacation, I can have an improved left foot. For two months straight. Almost everyday… I just kicked the ball with my left foot against the wall over and over and eventually you felt your body feeling more comfortable with my left foot. I came back and I helped my team win championships scoring goals with my left foot. I think it helps a lot because you can get a lot of repetition in a short amount of time. I think you build up muscle memory a lot faster too from the ball constantly hitting your foot and your mind and muscles being stimulated every few seconds

After College in America I lived in Jacksonville beach for years and would go play on hard sand with buddies just messing around barefoot all the time. My touch and movement increased significantly during that time. I can't tell you how much better I am now than when I was 18 (37 now) despite playing 20 times less and having full time job and family. Not in as good of running shape now but otherwise much much better. This stuff works like crazy. As soon as my kids are a few years older I will be out there everyday I can with them at the beach playing. This is the way...

I grew up in Glasgow and we had lock ups where we would hit the ball off the doors or wall for hours on end. Left, right left, right…… I became comfortable and natural on either foot. Great advice

Yes! I played in small back yard in Liverpool when a small lad with an old tennis ball .Kicking the ball against one wall then onto another wall immediately improves reactions and timing..then off into the street to apply these skills worked!

Freestyle with the ball in the air any time you have free time when you’re at home. Practice it with socks on and once you’ve got that down do it barefoot. Learn to do it barefoot, with socks, and with shoes so the ball does not touch the floor at all. Use music if you need to to stay in rhythm. Every other day do light weights, push up, pull ups, crunches, and leg raises. If possible run four miles a day every day or right before going to bed. If you can’t run that far non stop, then start by running one mile away from your home then turn and run back and work your way up to over four miles. This way you build lean muscle, be faster than and push people by just tapping them in a soccer game. You will also be able to get to the ball first before anyone and instinctively tap away the ball from the opponent due to your master ball control. Eventually work your way down to a smaller ball and learn to freestyle with a tennis ball or with an avocado nut. Learn to freestyle with stuffed animals as well. Using a flatter ball to practice will also teach you.

Here in Brazil we have something called "altinha" - keepie uppie - and people play it alot. Futsal too, tighter spaces require quicker reactions which forces players to protect the ball and improve finesse. In the end, all these drills help improve ball control. Just look all the great players of the sport, ball control is a must.

When Bill Shankly took over at Liverpool, he had built at the training ground, 4 walls which the players were put into the middle of and just trained hitting the ball against each wall, turning fast and hitting each wall. Liverpool players became renowned for being able to control and pass accurately and ended up being the top team in Europe. I myself, when there was nobody to play with as a kid, used to go up a quiet street and just practice hitting the ball against a wall. I used the kerb to make the ball shoot up and control it with my chest or trap it. It resulted in me being an excellent passer of the ball and able to hit the ball first time accurately as well as control it.

hmm.. thinking of this for my nephew. We have access to a nice wall to play on but not on "natural grounds" as you mentioned. It is cement/concrete. The only other wall I can think of with grass has lots of windows. Not sure he should play barefoot either. We have fire ants. Weighing our options here. Any input is welcome. Thanks!

@favour405 There are two types of drills we do Team drills and specialised drills Team drills are drills that are like passes to teammates with a dummy to pass around We also do buildup shooting, so we start from like the cb or gk to shoot in an 11 a side match We also work on tactics and formations and see if we can play in more than 1 position Specialised drills These are drills that benefit a players specific position For E.g, a striker will work on in the box finishing and headers A midfielder will work on short passes (t wall passes) And things like long passes to wingers/forwards Etc etc

54 years ago at school we used to play a game kicking a tennis ball onto the lean to sloping roof of the bike sheds. The next player would get it as it fell off the roof, keep it off the ground (no arms or hands) for at least 5 touches, before kicking/heading it back on the roof for the next player. Last one in wins. I also practiced hitting targets on a wall with a football and controlling the rebound with one touch and hitting the next target. Me and a mate would also play keepie uppy and regularly do 300. I went on to play semi pro after an injury cut off my academy career. Unfortunately my mate died young of cancer. Enjoy it while you can!

But you also need ball progression. My guess is that all you did before has been kicking in just now (that you got that trial). The wall is also good training I guess, passing and recieving balls. But if you have drifted with the ball further than other people, you will have more confidence with the ball.

Spent last winter 2 months in Brazil and juggled many, many hours barefoot on the beach, it's harder and took it's time to get used to it and in the beginning the friction of the sand got me even bloody wounds on the toes. Often random people would ask to play a bit together, they're really good. Anyways, back at home finally putting my boots on after such a long time... juggling felt super easy! I was hella surprised, so I can back this video

The difference is that when you improve technically you're "releasing" your brain from focusing on the ball, for example, during long ball pass flying to you. So in that second or miliseconds you're getting opportunity for a glance, to take and perceive some additional information to make better decisions. Same with dribbling or running with the ball, if you have very good control you can have "head up" and see what's going on around, what options you have or partners give you (to see free space, runs, etc.). It's only some moments, game intelligence and understanding is another topic, player should think about the game outside the field also. In game - just look around more and more often before you get the ball, so your brain will get some extra seconds for decision making.

Really good advice. Like others here I did this a lot as a kid, annoying the hell out of neighbours by practicing against their walls or the lockups. If you look at some of the drills Xavi did at La Masia, although he had a lot of technology to help train to receive, turn and pass, it's actually just the same underlying drills and skill as this.

I do this in my gym/country club there's a small 2v2 court with mini goals... I just push the goals aside and do it! the walls are a bit low and the pitch is crappy turf/carpet... but I can attest this is the best training I ever did. I do it barefoot intuitively good to see Berbatov also recommends that. Gonna look for natural grass but it's hard to find with walls honestly. I can currently do only 3 wall juggles+control touch (to each side of the corner of the wall)... It's so much harder than it looks! Nice vid

In my garden i had a big wall to kick against, by the best oart was there was a 3-4 foot tall small coal shed next to it wirh a corrugated metal roof so the ball would come back to me at unpredictable angles if i let it roll down that. I really think it gave me great resctions and control, i was captain of my junior school team, played with teams the year above me etc, and i was just doing it because it was fun really.

good video. I'm going to make a gym in the basement during the fall for my kids and me. Some strength and fitness. And then one part of the room becomes for football. I often diaper and just use a cone, receive on one side and then a move over to the other side with a shot or a pass. They are going to be perfect and my youngest boys of 10 years. shoting against a wall is the way every father teach their kids in Argentina (likely in many othe countries, no idea). It is easy, free the parents to do something else, and it has no cost. It also works, mostly for the balance.

We've all been through the "Wall". It's a very fun experience especially with friends I still remember our lil ass body can kick as hard as an adult and the scary part is when it's your turn to be the goal keeper without any equipment damn that's very painful but very fun and satisfying at the same time when you block it. it is a fun exercise to do however this approach is silly and reductionist and no you won't get a premier league trial by doing this exercise, Barbatov was chilling in his holidays probably and doing a fun drill not more. First touch in game-like situation with opponents require much more complex exercises which put you in a game-like situation (opponent, pressure, space) and make you receive the ball from different angles and positions.

Dude, I'm Brazilian... and when I was young, I used to do this a lot, at home and also when I was training for futsal. It's a big help, especially for ball control, control and precision in movements. You start to understand better how to touch the ball... I would challenge myself to throw the ball against the wall, and let it bounce only once, and only touch it back with the outside of my foot, then the inside of my foot, then the instep... I would alternate between hard touches and more subtle touches... it sounds crazy, but it helps me a lot.

for those with no large walls to use you can use your couch the bottom part , make sure you have some good space to move around as well

You are not kicking it firmly enough and also you may not be kicking it with the correct part of the foot. With the inside foot, turn your foot so that your toes are facing right. This creates a large surface for the ball to land. Then make sure the ball lands on the part of the inside foot between the ankle and joint of the big toe. Hit the ball firmly towards the and practice a lot.
