This Transit Agency Kept Its Promise - The PCCII Streetcars Back in Philadelphia 2024 - Route 15

As of July 7, 2023, the I-95 reroute work had been substantially completed, but trolley service not yet restored. WHYY reported that SEPTA officials had stated that several of the now twice refurbished PCC-II cars were in testing on the route and "at least" eight would be ready by "the end of the summer [2023]." [...] "The plan is to use trolleys and buses to serve Route 15, which allows us to deploy the restored trolleys while maintaining frequency on the route,” a SEPTA spokesperson told Billy Penn. As of August 2023, six of the cars had been restored, and SEPTA had announced a partial restoration of trolley service starting September 10, 2023. However, citing the need for more operator training, the agency has delayed the restoration, though still expected to resume trolley service sometime in late 2023. The restoration has since been pushed back to spring 2024. In June, SEPTA announced eight restored trolleys will resume service alongside buses on June 16, 2024 ~Wikipedia

Great footage! I rode the 15 the other day when I visited Philadelphia, but saw nothing but buses for what felt like a long time. I was starting to worry the PCC’s weren’t running that day, but finally, one of these streetcars came into view! Riding this line was one of the best parts of my trip!

The community wanted the attractive old trolly back. In the long run, they will have to mix in the new low-floor light rail cars to make the line ADA-compatible which will happen when they buy the new cars for the entire West Philly trollies. But this rehab has a really great story. These cars were rehabbed 20 years ago and the rehab was outsourced and not very good. SEPTA then chose to rehab in-house at the Southwest Trolly facility. Outsourced 20 years ago for $1.5 million per car, in-house for half that. A great job SEPTA! I was a part of the effort to rehab subway cars in NY back in the 80s and 90s and when David Gunn created the in-house shops at 207th Street and Coney Island the cost of the outsourced cars dropped. Lesson for public finance; have the in-house capability to keep outsourced costs honest!

Toronto used to have many PCC cars on many major streets. fast, comfortable, etc. new low floor cars are slow. too many one driver only cars clog narrow streets these days. I miss the old PCC cars. PCC were well built. old cars are now in service in other cities.

Septa cries broke every single day and they have money to put those things back on the streets.trolleys are an outdated form of transportation to say the least.
