They cant it has buttons if they throw pearl they will fall back again but yeah the pearl might reduce the damage or something

I think the buttons are there to stop easy saves by simply placing water or other block there. I don't know how they'd affect ender pearls; for that, you can simply have a piston push another block as a lid after the target falls.
