Congress wish list; 1) withdrawal from specific funds and 2) Roth conversion inside TSP. This will keep dollars in the TSP and therefore keep costs low and improve function.

Taken aback by the annuity returns' magnitude. Having a guaranteed income at a level similar to this is intriguing because managing your own finances can be a chore and cause stress. The fact that nothing in life is certain is one problem. What happens if the provider of annuities fails? Naturally, let's assume that they are covered in this case, but is it really cast iron-most likely not?

During a market slump, you might sell your brokerage account while simultaneously buying back stocks or bonds in your retirement account. Bonds or money market funds in brokerage accounts do not necessarily result in higher taxes. My F.A. *Leah* *Alderman* *Foster* consistently devises a cunning plan that works for me.

Undoubtedly, the F.A. you mentioned has some value. I reran the scenarios after the first time, this time allowing for a 20% reduction in my retirement savings (in the event of a significant market decline). I felt reassured with my plan and my savings after doing that.

The one I use is always dependable and expectant; I don't really trust KZbinrs because they are just interested in topics that will profit them. If, for example, I had 100% of my stocks in my taxable brokerage and needed to take a 20% loss on the market, I would simply sell the taxable stocks and purchase stocks in my IRA the same day. For instance, I could sell $40K of taxable stocks (even if the market is down), acquire $40K of taxable stocks, and sell $40K of bonds in my IRA all on the same day. Money can be used for several purposes. Please elaborate on why that wouldn't function. She had never given me negative advice before, so please get in touch using the name that was searched if you care.

At 59.5 years old and before retirement you are limited to four rollovers from tsp to IRA a year. This is a problem for me right now, I did not know this and am stuck in TSP until January now. So be aware that there are limits to your transfers to an IRA. I really hate TSP restrictions, I want that money rolled over asap.
@Rdominca
@Rdominca 25 күн бұрын
So roll a substantial portion of your holdings over into a private IRA and do what you've going to do over there. When I go into retirement my primary reason to want to continue to have access to the TSP is the G fund (it was a godsend in 2022). Currently my strategy is to keep enough in the TSP to meaningfully rebalance between the G and C funds (I could and perhaps could throw the I fund in the mix for geographical diversification). However, as I go to the withdrawal phase (retirement), funds to supplement FERS pension and Social Security will come from a broker like Vanguard or Fidelity.

@@Rdominca I will roll it all over to IRA even as working. You only get 4 transfers a year which I never knew. So I was making small transfers to test it out but now stuck until january I used up my four transfers.

What time period are you using to determine if the market is down? Also, how much percentage down do you use to decide which fund to withdraw? I think this is a gray area and just wondering about thoughts.
@PlanYourFederalBenefits
@PlanYourFederalBenefits 28 күн бұрын
Great question. It is very hard to predict the market. Therefore, its hard to say if right now is the "down market" because its all relative to future results. But, if you notice that your aggressive funds have lost their value recently, its probably not the best to sell or withdraw from that fund.

I have watched many of your videos and from the ones that I have watched, I just want to make sure that I understand. When I retire I will receive money from my FERS retirement, my TSP, and from Social Security? I was under the impression that my FERS retirement pulled money from my TSP, is this not the case? Finally, from what I have seen in this video, I am under the impression that the TSP is not automatic like the FERS and Social Security, is this correct? I have a minimum of 12 years before I will be able to retire, so I am just trying to make sure that I kinda have my ducks in a row, and for the time being, I'll leave the chickens in total disarray. I do find your videos very informative and recommend them to my coworkers.

Your FERs “annuity” is a pension based on your years of service times your high 36 months of salary ( this is a very basic explanation, Dallen has great videos on this). The money for FERs has no connection to your TSP. No money is taken from your TSP to fund / payout your FERS annuity/pension.

If you are interested in learning about retirement from in person training, I highly and strongly recommend you sign up for a Pre-Retirement course offered through your agency. The course should cover the basics of your FERS pension, TSP, and Social Security. This is a course that should be no charge to you -- check with the Human Resources training group who administer employee training souced from outside vendors. If you are with the Dept of Defense on a military base, you may also be able to access financial planning learning resources through the military community services organization.

Agree that you should take any course your agency offers on retirement. My agency had 4 or 5 courses. I took two of them 3 times! The one most focused on TSP I took at about 15ys, 10ys and 3 yrs. Each time it was a different person teaching and I learned something new. I probably should have taken the one on taxes at least twice, but I'd rather pay a little more in taxes than sit through 4hrs of that again! 😅 (My 6yrs of paying taxes in retirement haven't been an issue, but I am holding off on drawing from my TSP and I haven't moved or sold property. )

Some agencies and some locations are not as good about pre-retirement training (the farther you are from the Beltway or a major urban area, the more you're on your own). Fortunately there are more resources out there these days, both through videos on sites such as opm.gov and through content created by private sector writers and advisors (including Hawes Federal Advisors). Among the latter, there is a trade-off between short and upbeat vs. longer and in depth. Hawes tends more toward the former. Both have their place, but as you get closer to retirement you want to take in the latter as well. There are companies out there that will give day-long courses and do retirement income estimates for you. The content itself for one such workshop I attended was good (80% familiar to me, but helpful for getting my wife to think about how this affects her). All that company asked in return was that I listened to a pitch for a private annuity, which I then politely declined.

With the new 30day withdrawal request why not look at what you made in the previous month off of your c fund which is where I have all my investment and if I made made $10,000 for the month of June, why don't I just request 10,000 in the month of July and my tsp doesn't change... I would never take that much out. I don't need to taking into consideration what I'm putting in and the company I'm still making around $6,000 a month, I don't need to withdraw that much I can withdraw 3K plus my pension plus my supplement. And that's more than what I'm making now working. Plus that puts $3,000 back into my tspc fund

At 59.5 and older you can rollover your tsp roth and or tradional to like IRA equilivants don't mix them up. You have only four transfers a year so be aware of that. I did 4 smaller transfers to test the system and then was told no more transfers this year. TSP really sucks.
