There is a difference between DPA 4055 and other dynamic microphones in how much sustain they pick up. I'd like to hear how good it is on a snare during playing on a hi-hat and on toms. Thanks for the presentation.

dpa 4055 is not a dynamic microphone, bu t acondenser. Sensitivity is high on it, and has great off axis bleed sound. It's almost a safe bet to say it picks up as much as any other DPA which uses th esame caspsule.

I went to Sweetwater and checked out the price - for what you pay for this mic I think I’d rather have a couple other of the more popular choices. For example you could get a beta52 and a re-20 used but in excellent condition for around the same. If you went beta52, audix d6, sennheiser 902 I think you are in same ballpark too. Not saying this is a bad mic, I just would choose some of the usual suspects for the same spend.

The price is hefty. It already went up 150 bucks since december 2022. If you go the used route, i have seen these for 350 euros. RE20 will be somewhat the same price, new. My guess is that you will get the DPA if you need the flexibility and small form factor .

RE 20 is my favorite

Good choice!

I just use a sub speaker with some alligator clips to a 1/2” jack… literally 3-5 dollars for the phattest oomph I’ve ever recorded.

I always find that whenever I use something like that, in my case, a Yamaha subkick, I get mostly from 80 to 350 Hz from that speaker. It's great as an addition to other bass drum mics, but as a standalone, it isn't cutting it for me. Real sub lows I normally get from either my Sennheiser e602 or a condenser mic.

@@audiotoolshed you are correct. I have to use a mic on the beater to get a good sound, but, I have had some luck duplicating the sub kick mic and doing a steep HP filter and boosting around 800-1k (albeit comically eq’ed to bring out whatever high info the sun speaker is getting) I can get an Ok sound. But yes, stand-alone only doesn’t cut it for me either
