Jack heads to Germany for an early test drive of the new Genesis G80 Electrified. With a price tag tens of thousands of pounds lower than the high end luxury electric EVs it seemingly goes up against, and jam-packed with cutting edge technology, could South Korea's latest EV be the surprise bargain of the year?

I love this car. Had an Equus. I loved my Equus, but lost most of its value when the G 90 was released. Hyundai took my equity when my Equus left me. I’ve fallen in love again. I’m smitten again. I want to commit to a relationship with this opulent electric vehicle. It’s all I need and more than I want. Thank you for introducing me to the car that I’m sure will steal my heart. I’m ready to love again. I’m ready to forget my Equus past and live a “car-lovers” relationship with a G 80 Electrified. Hyundai, I will gladly tell of my love for your G 80 Electrified if you will give me a G 80 Electrified of my own to love.

I think the “lack of headroom” in this Asian car, is unfortunately because us Asians tend to be shorter and that’s good headroom for us. I’m 170cm tall, the average Westerner is almost 10cm taller.

I can understand putting the charging point in the front for people who can't reverse park but I'm not sure it's great for anyone who does lots of miles with all those bug splats incrusting the cover which you have to press to open. The space in the back is the biggest flaw. Only good for children. The Solar is a nice touch but only useful for maintaining the battery charge with ancillary devices sucking power from the battery which is reassuring if you're leaving your car parked at an airport car park for 2 weeks.

cool review. I've liked both the interior and exterior design of recent Genesis models. I owned a Hyundai Ioniq Electric in Korea for 2 years and was always curious about Genesis sedans (they're everywhere in Korea, and their SUVs too), but I never had a wealthy friend who owned one so I could get a ride in one lol. Maybe now back in the US they'll let me test drive one. Really wish the Genesis Mint had come out, I would've saved up for that.

The most interesting videos are Robert rants (about SUVs, about electric supposedly being worse than fossil, etc) and cheap cars. The expensive cars and don't interest me. I loved the Chinese car videos, including the Cat, MG5, MG ZS, and BYD Dolphin. I also liked more middle class cars with groundbreaking technology such as Ioniq 5.

Regarding a lot of the physical buttons and not much in the way of big screens, these cars are bought primarily by old people in the US, the prime market for this type of thing. Most really don't want to bother learning how to use fancy touch screen tech and would rather just have buttons for everything. I see these kinds of cars all over the place in retirement central, aka South Florida.

Great review of a very competent EV, thanks Jack. Whilst recognising there are some flaws because it's based on the ICE architecture, I think this is an excellent car. I'll be very interested to see when Genesis start to produce models designed on the new EV architecture as they are likely to be even better. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing their replacement of the slightly smaller G70 saloon as this would suit me down to the ground.

Wow what an amazing review Jack! Comfortability is a new word that sticks with me. You would not think that this was filmed in such a short timespan. As for the car itself. When sat in the Genesis at FullyCharged live it did just feel old fashioned and not my thing at all. This was played out during Jack’s review. So I have to conclude that while there is much to admire here, it’s not as desirable as an EV6 or Ioniq 5.

To be honest, 1500 km per year isn't super much, but it definitely is better than I thought it would be. Of course, it would make the most sense if you live in a sunny climate and less usefull if you live in northern europe or northern US for example.

1500 km a year for that solar roof is a great option. If they keep doing that and possibly increasing the efficiency . Imagine if they did that to suvs with double the roof area . Multiply that by 10 years of average ownership , that’s 15,000 km of free range or about a year free energy of driving . Imagine if 1 million cars on the road had that option installed that’s 15 billion km in 10 years so yea that’s not bad. And yes I understand. That’s under ideal conditions with no degradation .
@marc0523
@marc0523 2 жыл бұрын
Assuming full range is gained from the solar, it is a saving of £93.75 a year. It costs £1360 to option. That's over 14 years to repay the investment. Assuming you get the full amount out of it (you wont)

From video to video I like this very handsome young man a little bit more. Very entertaining performance, I enjoy the content. 3 gripes though: Dude, come on, the Ioniq 5 can adjust its head up display, I'm sure so can the genesis. Speaking from an owner's perspective. You could have shown rear leg room and floor height more clearly on camera. Your knees were visible, the camera work here could be improved. Also no mentions on charging times and speeds. Ioniq 5 level?

I imagine quite a few people who bother to test drive one of these, will buy or lease one...... The South Koreans are beginning to hit the mark each time these days... Have to say, I'm not a fan of that. I'm sure it's as good as Jack says, but aesthetically it's just a bit of a minger. A bit like someone took a vintage Jaguar and decided to make it 'look better' by adding spinners and body kit. I think it's the lights, they look sort of naff.

I am due to take delivery in a couple of weeks of a Electrified G80 in the Matira Blue but with Dark green/Arctic white interior. The price of £65k is a little misleading as you do need to add quite a few options, which come in 'packs'. The car I'm getting is £77,450 and had all the options of your test car with the exception of the Executive pack (rear screens, heated rear seats, electric rear blind, manual rear side window blinds, and soft close doors). At £3,040 it's as Jack suggests for the owner who likes to be driven. I think it's worth mentioning the screens control features for the whole cabin, as opposed to providing individual entertainment which some systems provide with the aide of wireless headphones. What I would say is, as pointed out, even at £77.5k it still represents outstanding value for money! A top spec Merc EQE which when it's goes on sale will be the closest rival in top spec form is over £88k, and whilst inoffensive both the EQE and EQS have IMO that melted bar of soap look, the Genesis I think however has a unique almost Bentley look - not surprising given the head of design used to occupy the same position at Bentley motors! Good review and valid points re space in the back, which mainly effects foot space. For me coming out of a Maserati Ghibli it ticks all the boxes, and as I rarely if ever carry rear seat passengers the exec pack and rear space are not considerations.

Hi Fully Charged! I am an EV fanboi and I look forward to when EV's become the obvious choice for anyone who wants to buy a new car. Allthough, I personally think buying a brand new car (regardless of the driveline) is a meh choice if you are one that supports the enviroment. But then again, how else would we phase out the diesel/petrol cars..? I would really like to know more about if the resources are there for everything (cars, housing, factories, etc.) in our infrastructure to be run with electric power and batteries. Are there resources enough for all the batteries that we'll need, or are we trapping ourselves in a corner eventually? Is this something that you would be interested to dig deeper into? Cheers.
