As a cyclist, it's well known that wheels and rotational weight makes a huge difference in how quickly bikes accelerate, decelerate, turn in, etc. The lighter weight is exponentially more important when it's on a rotating wheel than on the rest of the bike/car.
@robingielkens9795 Жыл бұрын
Angular momentum is determined by the moment of inertia, which is quadratic for wheels
@pjay3028 Жыл бұрын
True, although the very large diameter of bicycle wheels and the greater proportion of the overall weight of a bicycle that the wheels contribute (compared to a car) mean the impact of lighter wheels on a bicycle will be hugely more significant.

Love this content! I have been doing comparisons like this with my 997 GT3RS and found out that just swapping the wheels is not enough. The suspension has to match the lighter weight, where it didn't do so well with my 997 stock shocks with mag wheels. It was too light on its feet its bouncing around too much and can't put the power down. Realized you need new suspension and tire pressures to match.

Great video. I was aware of the weight saving per corner/ wheel with the PCCB ceramic brakes and had seen magnesium alloy wheels on the McLaren F1 with Gordon Murray. I don’t understand what ‘unsprung mass’ is with reference to weight saving. It must add to the momentum to overcome m.v (mass Kg x velocity m/s ) when accelerating the wheels, but having more mass must help with high speed cruising on a motorway.

It's not just direction change and braking that is improved by lowering the unsprung weight. Acceleration benefits too. About a decade ago we did a test with G-Power, the German BMW specialist tuner in Bavaria, to see if lowering the unsprug weight with their forged alloys made a difference to acceleration to speed. With a saving of about 3kg per corner we measured a consistent 0.1 sec improvement in the 0-100mph time with digital test equipment. The explanation for this is that the available power does not have to rotate as much wheel mass off the line and through the speed range. As Colin Chapman famously said, "For speed add lightness!"

I used to be a mountainbike racer. Minute changes to the bike, such as weight savings in the wheels, were very strongely felt. Getting this changes to express on the stopwatch was basically impossible, and dong the math, it would all become apparent. Weight loss in wheels FEELS a lot different, but it doesn't actually make you a lot faster You're feeling the wheels, but still need to bring along all the other kilos in rider and bike. If the car really feels better, it's a cool upgrade. If laptime matters, I guess math can work out how much the wheels will help. To measure, you need a whole bunch of free laps with a pro driver.

It should be obvious when you think about it that light weight wheels are going to improve performance in virtually every aspect. People focus way too much on this unsprung mass thing though, as your man said, its rotational mass that is really affected and that makes the difference in what you are feeling. Do this small experiment. Take a wheel, not a car wheel but a childrens bike wheel or similar, and just hold it on a spindle and change it's direction as if you're steering it. Now get someone to spin the wheel and do the same thing. You will feel the difference. And that wheel will be spinning at about 10mph, very slowly in comparison to a cars wheel. It'll soon put the whole thing into perspective. Essentially rotating mass s stored energy, just like a fly wheel, and any change to that energy, be it braking or a change of direction, takes more effort. Reduce the mass, reduce the energy, reduce the amount of required effort. Pretty simple :)
