He treated my dog about 20 years ago when his practice was still based in Bukit Timah….a very dedicated vet. My dog had to be euthanised eventually after many weeks of trying to save it. I remember Dr Ly coming in at night checking on my dog himself. Good to see him getting featured here.

Finally a vet who don't do euthanasia right away just because they think that the cat/dog is dying. This is what all vets must do to fight and do everything they can while the animal is alive even in it's worse condition. I hate vets who would just suggest euthanasia to pet owners rather than doing something to save seriously ill pets. I hope all vets will be like him that don't just rely on euthanasia but to keep on that hope of life and do whatever they can to give these animals a second chance to live.

I think that is a fine line. I can totally see where you are coming from and a vet should not be like "Yeah so it's pointless and not worth it, just get a new pet, that's cheaper" Luckily, here in my place, vets like that are the absolute exception. But on the other hand I also would not want a vet that drags the process out too much when it does not make sense. (not saying the vet in this video is like that, I do not know him after all) In my area vets for the most part don't make a huge amount of money with their jobs, so besides some rare exceptions the temptation to perform unnecessary treatments for monetary gains is not there, though you will always find some black sheep ofc. A stronger temptation however might be to just give the owners hope at times. Which is understandable. People who really shouldn't own pets in the first place aside, I believe most people owning pets would want to do anything for them they can. I mean they often are almost like real family members. But because of that I feel it is also important for a vet to tell you a hard truth when it is really needed. Sometimes further treatment and especially surgery might be in the perceived interest of the owner but not in the interest of the animal (technically the *patient*) For example in cases where treatment could prolong the life of an animal, but would only do so at the cost of great suffering. Or when the chance of a treatment being successful is in no relation to the risk of doing even more harm to it. Making such decisions is never easy. Letting go of our beloved pets is never easy. And it should not be. But I believe, at times, the greatest service we can do to them is to let them go. Still remember most I had with me and many more I just took care of for a limited time and they all had their own personalities and quirks, just as us humans. I take comfort in the knowledge that I gave them a good life during the time we shared. Glad for every pet out there that is in the hands of a caring owner :)
