21:25 "Don't westernize it" The Guy: "Berserk is inspired by Western culture" Honestly this is the only guy I agree with completely, because Berserk is based on western medieval times. Its a straight up high fantasy novel. It has more in common with modern fantasy works than any other anime. If HBO takes it up and hires competent writers who respect the source material (and don't add US politics) it has the potential to be great.

jjk middle of the first season was weirdly paced with all the 1 v 1's. I personally didn't like that part that much. Also Mahito sucks because his ability is seemingly whatever the writer wants it to be at that moment as he seemingly can do anything. I am enjoying season 2 so far though.

@@dearen7588You don't understand Mahito's character then. He can manipulate a person's soul, including his own and uses that to change the forms of others or himself. @@matthewjutzen424 Come on. He wanted to kill Nanami and had him picked up by his face. 2 seconds later he is making a power drill from his hand and spikes are popping out from his limbs. Why didn't he shoot a spike or drill through Nanami's head then? I'm talking about this kind of thing rather than his character. If he can make a literal power drill from the palm of his hand or avoid death by transforming into a tiny tube to go underground then what can't he do? Why stop at a drill, maybe he should transform the shape of his soul to include a functioning Glock on his right arm. There are infinite possibilities for what he could do, which is why we are at the whim of the author. The episode making it seem like he was going to die and then pulling a "lol nope" is an insult to the viewers intellect as everything points to him dying, you start thinking he's going to die and yet we're fooled.

@@dearen7588 As someone who's read the later arcs, you'll see why they didn't kill him off at that point later. You'll also see a ton of characters with much crazier abilities than body manipulation. There's a dude who can make anything he thinks is funny reality. There are also simpler abilities, like lightning or shooting beams. It's really a modern day Bleach but, if characters actually died more often. People will see in the later half of season 2 and all of season 3.

okay, up top, my favorites are Golden Kamuy, Vinland Saga, Dorohedoro, Mob Psycho 100, Chainsaw Man... probably some others, but these are my representative series. on to some opinions. I think if you're out here saying "Fruits Basket is overrated" you might need to readjust your definitions a bit. Fruits Basket is like, THE shoujo series... a lot of the tropes that you see in Fruits Basket became common because Fruits Basket did them so well first. and if anything about Fruits Basket seems generic, it's because a lot of other series copied Fruits Basket, and it retroactively ran that stuff into the ground. if you take Fruits Basket by its own merits, I think the series is very good... but you can't come at it with cynicism. like... with enough cynicism, you can make anything sound stupid, but Fruits Basket in particular works best when you're willing to let it get to you. I think anime fans just need to learn how to feel something without all the irony poisoning. (also, side note, shoujo is basically impossible to "overrate" because everybody always underrates it compared to shonen. but honestly, that's the whole problem with the terms "overrated" or "underrated" like, those words mean nothing. just say whether you think the thing is bad or good, instead of just talking about audience reception all the time. quit blaming other people for having shit taste, and talk about what your taste actually is and why. I want to steal those words from the anime community sometimes.) JJK is... fine. I enjoyed it well enough, but I can't really analyze it the way I can with other stuff. I have more complicated opinions about it, but I'm not about to get into it all right here. I fell off of Attack on Titan... and I think outside of certain extenuating circumstances, the reason might be because it started to feel too hopeless to me. like, at first you're watching, and you know it's gonna be kind of a slaughter fest yaknow? like, we have lots of background characters because we need the canon fodder, you're pretty sure one of the main trio is gonna die at some point... but things can still be like that and give you a bit of hope at the same time, right? that's what Eren's titan form is supposed to do for the show... you see him transform, and you get that feeling of hope, like humanity has a tool and can fight back now. but when you take another step back and really look at the cast... I was finding that I didn't really enjoy the personalities of any of the characters quite enough. or like, at least none of the relationships between the characters. they all felt either really toxic and unhealthy toward one another, or really really doomed, or like they were just coworkers. it took until Ymir and Historia for me to really get invested in a relationship, but you could stll tell that they were being set up to fall apart. I just had nothing to really root for after a while. I liked Hange... I liked Levi and his squad, until... well. hm. yeah, it just felt like, for any character that I ever tried to get invested in, the show was always gearing up to pull the rug out from under me. it even did it a little too early for Reiner and Bertholdt, I hadn't even had the chance to get fully attached to them yet, we were still in the early days with them, and I was kind of waiting for them to endear themselves to me a bit more, but like, we're _always_ in that beginning stage, and then there's some big heel turn. (but mostly I fell off because I stopped watching somewhere in the middle... it was only because I got busy, but by now I would have to do a rewatch in order to understand all the technical/political plot, but the character stuff makes a rewatch feel like it'd drag a bit... a first watch goes down smooth because of all the thriller type big reveal moments, but once you know all the answers and have to wait for them to drop, it can kind of turn the suspense into waiting.)

@@logicandemma8474 my shonen of choice is Chainsaw Man... I actually wrote up a bigass comment explaining why just a little bit ago, so I won't elaborate too heavily, but I like being able to dig into the themes. I feel like, for me, JJK has some weird gaps in the story and characterization that I get hung up on. it's not a bad show by any means, but I find myself asking too many questions that don't have satisfying answers. and yeah, I'm not heavily into shoujo... but Fruits Basket is an exception for me just based on the strength of the character writing. it is dated in some ways, and it's not for people who can't do a series without action or something, but I can't help liking it... it got me. ^^;

Yo I found my man! Even if I didn’t watch JJK, I can agree with you. When I say about an anime ‘it’s fine’ , I mean it’s good, but in an anime I’m looking for something special, like in Dorohedoro, Chainsaw Man or JJBA. And in contrast with these, the ‘fine’ animes like Demon Slayer, JJK and I think One Piece too, are just mid. Because they are not special for me. I accept if anyone thinks differently, tbh I’m a really big anime snob. On the other hand, I feel a little…no, a lot of burning hatred when I see that One Piece is above 1000 episodes, the trashy isekais also get a second season, meanwhile Drifters and Dorohedoro not and never will. That’s why I used a drastic word, like ‘mid’. About AOT, I have more thoughts than I know English. Let’s just say it’s not mid but it isn’t good either.

also, my big hot take on FMA is that the manga is the best version of the story. each of the anime has it's good elements, but the manga did it right the first time, and even after Brotherhood, we still haven't gotten an anime that does it right. FMA 2003 has my preferred tone, art style, and pacing, but that was the version where the manga wasn't complete, so they started making stuff up. I think it's cool what they did, and I don't fault them for their decision... that show was too plot driven for filler episodes in the first place. but I like where the manga goes a lot better. Brotherhood's tone and pacing are actively irritating to me in the early episodes. I know how it's supposed to go, and I'm watching it get butchered half the time. even the colors feel a bit too bright. they hold the jokes for a bit too long. they don't spend long enough on the plot relevant and atmospheric bits. I've seen these scenes done well before... and I know everyone gets directed to watch Brotherhood as their introductory experience with this series, so it hits me even more wrong. if you want the best version of FMA, read the manga. that's my picky fan opinion.

@kamuyking551
@kamuyking551 Жыл бұрын
@@logicandemma8474 tbh, that's valid... and I think that has something to do with the way it's constructed. the beginning of the series is a lot of setup. so for example, the first couple of chapters in the manga feature the Leore incident with father Cornello, and the mining town incident with Yoki. and the purpose of these stories is to show the ways that alchemists can be worshipped (Cornello) and the ways that alchemists can be hated (Yoki) because alchemy is a very powerful skill, and when people hold power over others, they can end up being venerated or feared, depending on how they use it. and this complexifies Ed's position as a very young state alchemist. he's inheriting a lot of baggage by taking on this title, especially as a military/government backed position of power, and even at that point, you don't know the half of it yet. the story is definitely going places with this theme. the Leore chapter also has a LOT to say about alchemy and it's place in the universe, as well as messages about the value of the truth vs. the comfort of a lie, and the personal responsibility we bear when we fall for lies... but also, Ed tends to wield the truth rather abrasively. Ed is such an interesting character, because at times he can come off as such a little shit, even when he's trying to do something that he personally believes is right. I don't think he could've lived with himself if he let Rose go on believing in something that could harm her, but I think half the reason she wouldn't listen to him was because he seemed too arrogant, and both can be true at once. the story is going places with this characterization. the story also leads off with three major tragedies... I'm not going to fully detail what they are, just in case you ever want to go back unspoiled, but these three events establish the permanence of death, and the value of a life. this is important because alchemy is transactional, and it is emphasized that you can only get out what you pay in. it's important to know what something costs... and it's important to know when something is priceless. there is no amount that you can pay to completely replace someone. not in a way that matters. early on, the story mostly runs on character intrigue. and it has to establish this big point about how important people are, before it starts setting off fireworks in the plot, because by the time it does, you have this rock solid foundation of characters you're invested in, players on the field, pieces of the puzzle... and when everything starts to move at once, that's when you get more of the plot intrigue. and honestly, this is why I recommend the manga. in FMA 2003, a lot of this setup doesn't go where it was intended to, because they literally changed the late game story. and in FMAB, they speedrun the setup, and don't present it in a very entertaining way half the time... the jokes are cloying, and I don't like the pacing, and it feels like the makers of the anime were leaning on the idea that there just weren't any first time viewers... they'd all either read the manga or watched FMA 2003 first. which wasn't and isn't true. so the manga remains the most well constructed version of the story, in my opinion. like, FMAB pops off as soon as you get past the setup, but the setup is actually enjoyable to consume in the manga.

I watched brotherhood and I thought it was fine, I think my biggest issue while watching is it was severely overhyped imo? Like before watching everyone online was like it’s peak, the characters are incredible, plot is insane, just look at MAL it’s number one bro etc and then I got to it extremely excited and it never delivered, now don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it enough to finish it and found it had some great moments but as a whole I thought it was just fine. Like I think it did everything well but nothing extremely well and I guess that was my issue, personally in fiction I love when even one or a couple things is done extremely well and with fmab I never got that. I can see why a lot of people love it but it just didn’t scratch the same itch for me I guess.

But during a manga drought (and with the help of sheer boredom at work) I ended up reading through the entire manga and can gladly say it’s now in my top 10. I, like many of these people, only watched the first season and just stopped, calling it “mid”. Had I kept going, I would have discovered a much more complex and nuanced story. It’s like my father used to say, “90% of dads stop beating their kids right before they finally fix them.” In this instance, AoT is my kid and I, for one, am glad I continued to beat him. ❤

man, okay, actual hot take: Chainsaw Man is way better than mainstream takes will ever make it seem like it is. Chainsaw Man is about the dehumanizing effects of poverty. it's about class divides, and exploitation, and the way that stoicism can degrade your quality of life. there's so much I could say about Chainsaw Man, and the implications of that narrative, but it's not explicit in the text, and a lot of people aren't taking the time to parse that out. like, to me, Chainsaw Man has a much more dense and rewarding story than a lot of other shonen. and as a mini hot take: if you're out here saying that an anime doesn't get good until after 20 episodes have passed, then you're selling short what an anime like Chainsaw Man can do in just one. (I'm about to copy over a bunch of stuff I've written about Chainsaw Man. jump ship now if you don't want to do a lot of reading today.) from the very first scene of the show, we see Denji going up against the tomato devil, and right off the bat we can tell so much about the world. devils are created from people's collective fear, but each devil is specific. it's not just some random creepy thing, it's the devil that represents people's fear of tomatoes, specifically. and because people don't fear tomatoes very much, it's power level sucks shit. but Denji's power level also sucks shit. he's an impoverished child. the reason why he's doing a dangerous job like fighting devils is because he's too poor to have any other option. and likewise, the tomato devil terrorizes humans because people aren't going to be afraid of tomatoes all on their own. you gotta work to get paid. both Denji and the tomato devil are poor, weak, vulnerable, and trying to get ahead in the system that determines their sense of security. they're trying to protect themselves by hurting each other. but more than that, in the first episode, Denji shows us over and over that the only value his life has, comes from his willingness to hurt himself. he'll eat a cigarette for money. he'll fight devils for money. what does it do to a person's self worth when the only positive outcome they can achieve comes from destroying themselves? and it starts affecting him later on, when Denji gets out of this crippling debt situation and starts looking for genuine affection. with the way he grew up, nobody would ever give him the time of day. in the first episode, he says that someone as poor as him has no shot at dating, because he's completely undesirable. his self worth is 100% transactional, in a very literal way. like... he knows how much money each of his body parts goes for. he has the expectation that people will take pieces of him without a second thought, because as a person, his quality of life is worth jack squat. and you can see it in his deal with Power... "I'll get your cat back if you'll let me touch your chest" is just another transaction. without the payment, Denji knows he couldn't expect the end result. because deep down he knows that nobody finds him inherently worthy of anything. he's always had to put up some form of collateral. but even when he pays for the act, it doesn't mean anything all on it's own. he wants sentiment... but he doesn't know how to give sentiment either. it all goes back to his financial insecurity. he grew up in a situation where nothing was truly his. anything he had was instantly forfeit, due to the massive debt he was saddled with. so he learned to desensitize himself to loss, remove his expectations of ever keeping anything, and never truly feel desire or affection for anything... not so much that losing it could hurt him. losing everything was a foregone conclusion. even losing Pochita hasn't really hit him the way it would hit a normal person. how could he have ever expected to keep something that good? but this leads to these massive intimacy issues, where Denji isn't willing to invest, and doesn't realize what the roadblock is. why isn't this thing he wanted actually satisfying to him? why isn't there any warmth, or comfort? this is the way that Denji has been dehumanized, in every sense of the word. and then in episode 5 Makima comes in, and plays right into it. she promises him the kind of physical intimacy that would actually feel good. something that comes from observing people, and figuring out what they actually respond well to, at least on a physical level. you can almost believe the affection is there. but as soon as she gives him even just the smallest taste, it's "kill the gun devil, Denji." because nothing is ever free. nobody would give Denji anything just for being Denji. there's always a catch. it's the transaction again. and it's actually a transaction that Denji is very familiar with. being willing to put himself in danger used to be the only thing anybody ever thought was valuable about him. it was the only worth he could squeeze out of his meager life. so when someone asks him to hurt himself for them, he doesn't bat an eye, or think it's weird at all. he doesn't question it, even a little bit. if someone truly cares for you, they should want to keep you out of danger, not send you into it. but nobody has ever really wanted to protect him before. Denji has only ever had that kind of dynamic with maybe one other entity before... and Pochita ended up dead. Denji couldn't keep him. he couldn't protect him. there's no sense in giving the kind of care that will be guaranteed to cause you grief later. as long as Denji doesn't feel that affection, he'll never feel fear. and that wraps right back around to the devils and the way that fear becomes their strength. I mean, in the first place, a system that feeds on fear is probably exploiting the lower class most of all. poor people have more stuff to be afraid of. Denji coughs up blood in the first episode, and realizes he might've inherited his mother's fatal heart condition, but Denji can't afford a doctor. imagine how much of his fear could be alleviated if anyone was taking care of him, or if he had the means to properly take care of himself. I bet the rent payment devil doesn't mean jack shit to rich people, but to poor people, that's their constant nightmare. on the other hand... a fear that constant will desensitize you eventually. you'll become numb to it eventually. and when it wraps back around like that, you almost kind of end up breaking the system entirely. after a certain point... what more could they possibly take from you? in terms of his humanity, Denji is constantly losing... but in terms of fighting, he comes out on top. and that is exactly what I think Makima wants to exploit. and all the while, there's this tension in Denji's character. it'd be good for him to learn that he can keep things, and want things, and get emotionally invested in people... but every time he takes a step closer to caring, he gives himself vulnerabilities that can hurt him. if he loves someone, then seeing them get hurt would hurt him. if he never cares, then he's a better fighter, but a worse person. and you do want to see him improve. I also want to just drop this bit that I love about the designs of Denji and the Katana devil: physically, Denji and Katana man look similar... they even have blades in all the same places, and they've got a similar half devil thing going on. but Katanas are forged blades... they're something that requires craftsmanship, they're valuable, and they're meant to be used as a precision weapon. Katana man uses Katanas for their intended purpose, and it's an upper class type of weapon. it also holds a lot of loyalty symbolism, which turns sinister when you remember that someone can be unquestioningly loyal to a bad person, like how this guy is loyal to his scummy Yakuza grandfather. meanwhile, Chainsaws are literally a working class utilitarian tool... in the first episode we even see Denji initially using Pochita as a chainsaw for cutting down trees, before he ever thought to use him as a weapon against other devils. it's ironic that Pochita, with his cute appearance and useful function, doesn't seem fearsome at all until Denji decides to use him in a different way. and when repurposed as a weapon, chainsaw blades rip and tear and create a much more gruesome wound. it's messy... this isn't what it's intended for. but a kid like Denji had no choice but to make do, and use whatever he had in order to claw his way out of his own misfortune. so like... if the Katana devil is like a domesticated attack dog, then the Chainsaw devil is more like a wild animal. one demands control, and the other demands to be uncontrollable. Chainsaw Man is a story that's really about something, more than just magic, and power scaling, and fight scenes that look cool, and horny female character designs. Denji is disempowered in all the sentimental ways that matter in terms of his humanity and fulfillment needs. all his relationships are messed up, because his life messed him up, and fixing it isn't simple or easy. it makes you really want to root for him, that's our boy, growth is hard but he's gonna do it. I want to believe in him, even when he's being cringe and weird. tell me what other shonen is pulling even half this thematic weight.

@@jojo2767 I hate to break it to you, but any show has the potential to sell itself to me on it's own merits. I literally only feel this way about Chainsaw Man because I watched Chainsaw Man. I also watched JJK, but I think it has more gaps in the narrative, and doesn't flow as cleanly with the character work. like, I could write probably a similar amount about JJK, but it'd mostly be about the issues I had with it. I don't like complaining as much though, so I'll only elaborate if you ask me to. but on top of that... I'd write this much about anything that gave me enough to say. I do this for fun. I could info dump ten times this much about Vinland Saga, like, Chainsaw Man isn't even topping the list of stuff I like for me, I just think it's doing more thematic work than a lot of other shows.

Completely Agree And it's just 12 episodes I read the manga And those 12 episodes are nothing compared to what comes after

I agree with with the one piece one. I stopped at 105 because i just couldn’t take it anymore it. It had it’s moments in the episodes I watched but it’s unbearably boring most of the time and I can’t sit true 900 more episodes because i have things to do.
