Censorship, and cancellation. People who know history, especially under communism are upset. Those that understand the direction America is taking are terrified. Those that have lived through it are warning. Younger generations haven't even read "1984", or realized it was based on actual events. They don't know how it came about, or see it happening around them. We are in the lion's mouth.

To be fair, they weren't quite as necessary, but not the point of the movie Oppenheimer. It wasn't necessary since the Japanese surrendered as soon as the Soviets invaded and feared a Soviet invasion. Thinking that the nukes was what ended the war is a misconception
@BasicallyBaconSandvichIV
@BasicallyBaconSandvichIV 5 ай бұрын
@@deadteddybear2423 I'm pretty sure that the bombs AND the Soviets were important. They used the bombs as the reason to surrender for the civilians. And the Soviet threat for the army. Because the army would have otherwise ignored orders and kept on fighting, because they didn't understand the devastation of the bombs unlike the civilians. But all the civilians heard was that they were winning the war, so they didn't understand the Soviet threat. So the bombs was a good explanation for the civilians, but not the army. Yet the Soviet invasion worked well on the army, but not the civilians. Though there is an argument to be made that the second bomb was less necesary. As it could complete it's main function of signalling that the US had multiple by being dropped somewhere with less/no civilian casualties. Though the counter argument would be that they didn't know wheter that would be enough to make Japan surrender. But that's disputed. So then we transition into an entirely differant conversation which I don't know enough to comment about. Anyhows, the key thing is that BOTH were important for Japanese surrender.
@deadteddybear2423
@deadteddybear2423 5 ай бұрын
@@BasicallyBaconSandvichIV I could agree with that, but if one of the two haven't happened in our timeline, the Japanese would have surrendered anyway

There was like one time in history when Japan was a victim without any string attached: when American admiral forced the Bakufu to open the country. This is the only time when I can say Japan was 100% a victim without any "but". And that time is... few uneuqal economic treaties. And theyve managed to make the use of them anyways. I am interested in Japanese culture and history, but when it comes to stuff like WW2 I have as much sympathy for them as I have for the Germans. And I think about apologists of both of them (when discussing that period) as morally equivalent.

Idk if it was necessary but I totally agree that the Japanese government did not intend to accept defeat. In that means it might seem necessary but could that not be achieved by invading? Ofc one could come and say that this would cost many americans life’s and I agree. But would it be the same number of loss like the tragic atomic bombs? We have also to think that the Soviet Union would help (like they promised to) if they would not chose to drop the bomb. So maybe it was unnecessary but that might also not be the case as maybe the outcome would be different (Japanese government not accepting defeat). What I want to say is that in my opinion talking if something was necessary or not is not an easy thing to do. In the end it’s just some thoughts that came into my mind. So a few things about the numbers: 1) 200 000+ is the estimate for direct, immediate deaths from the bombs. It doesn't include the deaths from leukemia and other after effects. 2) As many as 30 000 of those immediate deaths were not civilians, or at least not combative civilians (eg: Japanese citizens). A lot of them were soldiers, especially in Hiroshima, and a lot of them were slave workers including Koreans and Chinese. Also, 25 were Allied soldiers (a number that probably would have been higher if Japan didn't summarily and systematically kill POWs). 3) As per the above, neither were targets chosen for their capacity for civilian casualties, but were instead chosen primarily for their strategic and military capabilities, with both being port cities with significant shipyards. The civilian casualties were a necessary evil, but they weren't gratuitous.

The war crimes alone that the Japanese Empire committed in my country, the Philippines, are pretty horrendous. The massacres of The Battle of Manila in 1945, estimated to have casualties of up to 100,000, the Bataan Death March, in which 75,000 Filipino and American soldiers marched to Japanese imprisonment camps where many died of hunger, dehydration, and the brutality of the march, the looting and destruction of our cities, the medical experimentation conducted by Japanese scientists, the sexual violence committed by soldiers which resulted in thousands of Filipina women being turned into comfort women, forced labor for building fortifications and military infrastructure, and finally, the torture and execution of soldiers and civilians-all of this happened in just three years. I mean, this is true war crimes. In my personal opinion, though I do not harbor much hate for Japan now, they should acknowledge what they did. Watching videos like that triggers me.

As a Filipino I could say that we were taught about the Japanese occupation as just another page of Philippines' colonial history. Out of the countries occupied by Japan, the Philippines (as of my understanding) had been one of the earliest to improve relationship with them. This could be explained by the fact that Japan had quickly become a significant partner for the Philippines' development. Even now, we would rather conveniently forget about their warcrimes than lose an inch of the West Philippine Sea to China. But considering their years of occupation were more cruel than the centuries of spanish and american rule with a lot less benefits to bring to us, Framing that Japan was doing a good war until they were nuked is as legitimate as China's claims on the West Philippines Sea

They just think "strong means bad, weak means good" They don't actually pay attention to what happens in the real world

There's a japanese saying all the bad things the US did and an american is responding saying what Japan did. The argument "they did worse" is bad, it doesn't support itself. Both countries did horrible things and both countries didn't apologize, that seems very childish. This is why I don't like nationalism.

Yo Drew, either killing mass civilians in war is a bad thing or it isn't. You don't need to justify why the US committed war crimes, unless ur justifying that war crimes are essential in winning wars- but then the hypocrisy of rules for thee and not me is more than present.

True, it's such an idiotic claim. Like the CCP wouldn't have even won the chinese civil war if it weren't for the war crimes the japanese military did during the second sino japanese war. How is that even CCP propoganda?

“Did you know *insert any event in ww2* was a war crime? Like yes, actually I suspected that the most horrific event in all of history was bad, and the drastic things done to end it were nearly unthinkable even to the people at the time. Thanks for clarifying the point.

I don't think that one country committing war crimes justifies another country committing war crimes. The USA can justify it all they want, but the simple fact is that the USA knew that the majority of their victims would be civilians, and went ahead with the attacks anyway, which is a war crime. Both countries committed atrocities. Neither is justified by the other.
