Inception is a film that has stuck with many fans since it's release ten years ago. The haunting final shot of the movie has had people debating back and forth over whether Cobb was dreaming or not for the past decade and it's become a massive talking point in the film theory community.
However, there may be an even deeper element to the entire movie that many have missed and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down all the evidence that hints at Cobb being the Job. There's several lines laced throughout the film that suggest his friends and family are trying to get him to let go of the idea of his late wife which has held him back from being with his children.
From here on out there's Heavy Spoilers so if you've been living in a dream world and haven't had a chance to check out the movie then I highly recommend that you check out now.
If you're still here, welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Deffinition, now let's get into our Inception Fan Theory.
Inception Fan Theory
So since it's inception, inception has inceptioned inceptions.
Sorry what?
What I mean by that is, the movie is a multi layered misssion into the mind of a mans subconsciouness based around the notion that an idea can be a dangerous thing.
This is something I've experienced myself and since rewatching the film for a big breakdown the reality of what's going on has been knawing away at me.
So in the film we follow Cobb, an expert at stealing ideas who has been apparently handpicked to break into the a newly appointed CEO in order to convince them to split their company apart.
Cobb succeeds in doing so and as a thank you, Saito the owner of the aforementioned Corporations Competitor pulls some strings at the American border so that Cobb can pass through it and be reunited with his children.
Cobb hasn't seen them for years and as we learn, he is consumed by guilt and regret, believing that he caused his wife's death.
In the film we discover that the two spent decades in their subconsciouness and during this Cobb planted the idea in her mind that their reality was wrong. This helped in getting her to wake up, however this idea continued on far past the dream and Mal, Cobb's wife became obssessed with the notion that they were still in a dream and thus she committed suicide in order to wake up.
Mal staged the scene to look like Cobb had been complicit in her death and thus he fled the authorities.
Cobb just can't get over her and throughout the movie she ruins his plans, shows up at the wrong moment and almost traps him in the layers of his own subconscious. However, at the end of the movie he finally lets her go and reunites with his family.
It seems like he came to this decision on his own but what if this itself was an Inception. What if letting her go was the entire point of the film and his friends staged the mission so that he believed he'd come up with the idea himself?
Well there are several clues that point towards this.

My theory is: Cobb did inception to his wife His wife remade her todum ( it can't b a todum if someone else touched it ) & she made cobb believe they are in reality now by her todum ( inception) as his friend said in beginning of the movie inception doest work more thn a layer, so she become normal once she came out of that layer , but now she can't stay here in dreams, but inception she made make cobb belive this is real, so she asks cobb to join if not she set up cops on cobbs after her death but cobb refuse to believe, Cobbs himself says in the movie they were going back & forth without knowing how long it takes in realtime wht state of dream they are in now ( so he had no idea whn returned few layers back after so long growing old ) This layer is cobbs uncle's dream state so he will b here until they both return from their dreams ( he doesn't exists in depper layers) his wife who is out now came back to save him as a architecture glr suggested by her father for cobb's mission, to take care of him & bring him back by changing his todum (inception) , he rolled it & he tured back with his children's in hand to see the todum stand still & finds out childs were his projections that's why they pop up every were & they got married in this dream layer so he doesn't hav wedding ring in any other layers 😳 he need to return to reality part 2

I've always believed it's fairly clear that Cobb is the job in this movie and I also think that several of the main characters (Arthur, Nash, Mal, Fischer, Browning, and possibly Eames and Yusuf) are all aspects of Cobb as well. I believe the entire movie is a dream that Cobb is still in. Ariadne, Saito, and Miles are the ones performing the inception on Cobb. I also think it's possible that Mal didn't die at all and her suicide jump from the window was her actually escaping the dream, she was right all along. That scene makes almost no sense any other way. He walks into the trashed hotel room only to find her about to jump out of a mirror image hotel room across the street!?!? I think it's very possible that Ariadne is his actual wife and that's why she is so upset the first time she see Mal who is the representation of her in his dream. When they all wake up on the plane at the end they are all waking up to the top layer of Cobb's dream and when he goes home to his family in the dream it is confirmation that they have successfully planted that idea inti his head. We never see it but Cobb will eventually make it home to his family, probably including his living wife and much older children, sometime after the movie ends.

I've always believed that Mal was actually right. That they were not back to reality when Mal "killed herself." The same lines and reasoning cited here, apply equally if Mal is attempting to incept Cobb with the idea to come back. People seem to just accept that Mal was wrong about jumping. My theory is also one of the only ways to explain that Cobb breaks the most important rule of going into dreams- dont use anyone else's totem (Cobb uses Mal's). But Mal pleads at one point for him to "come back to reality." People rushed this off? Or what about Michael Cain's character basically calling out how unbelievable (dreamlike) his life is (being chased by spies, etc)?

My interpretation is that all the main characters are the parts of Cobb's subconscious that are helping him overcome his guilt. Just like we fight in ourselves where parts of us want to give up and at the same time want to find hope, Cobb has different characters representing different parts of him. Ariande represents the part that encourages him to overcome his guilt. Saito represents the part that can release him from the consequences of his guilt. Eames and Arthur are more like soldiers helping him fight his internal battles. The movie easily shows that the main characters could be part of Cobb's subconscious because in the scene where Ariande and Cobb are doing dream training, Cobb explains the subject has projections of other humans in their dream and the projections are part of his subconscious. For this theory to work then that has to mean that Cobb doesn't ever arrive in reality. That has to mean that Cobb is still in a dream with his kids. But, how can that be when it seems the top is about to fall? Let me explain. At the end the totem falls, but he is still in a dream and he knows it. There are at least two places in the film that shows that if you are the dreamer you can control your dream. One example is near the beginning when Saito, Cobb, Nash, and Arthur are in a Middle Eastern or North African nation with a riot outside and Saito realizes he is still dreaming. He says that means he can control his dream, but Nash corrects him and says that's not true because it's his dream. Then in the first flashback of Cobb's that shows his life with Mal, they are arguing about if they are in reality. Mal thinks they are still in a dream. Cobb is convinced they are in reality. Cobb says if I'm dreaming then why can't I control it. Mal yells because you don't know you're dreaming. Here it shows that if you know you are the dreamer then you can control your dream. So at the end, Cobb realizes when meeting old Saito in limbo that where he considers reality really isn't reality. And Cobb convinces himself to take a leap of faith, which is to be with his kids in what he considers reality. I think the meaning of the ending is he loves his kids so much that even if they are not real, he would still choose to live with them. We do the same thing with relationships that are not good for us, but we stay in them in due to having this narrative or idea we have created for ourselves that makes us happy or sane or comfortable. Maybe the meaning of Inception was for Cobb to cause inception on himself and put the idea in his head that his kids are real in what he called reality and deep down he doubted his kids existence. I mean, he saw examples of that he may be dreaming in what we thought was reality. For example, he saw that window with curtains that refer back to Mal's death and he saw that on the dream level and he saw it while in what we think is reality after waking up in Mombassa with Yusef. Also, he spinned the top in reality often showing he doubted reality. But, here is how he made the top fall. Cobb is the dreamer so he can control it and if he chooses to believe that wherever he is is truly reality then the top falls. So at the end, Cobb takes a leap of faith and chooses to have faith and believe that he is in reality and with his real kids even if he can't prove it. He performed inception on himself. Like when we choose to believe in a religion or political view or a product or a relationship or ourselves. We perform inception on ourselves anything we choose to believe in something even when we have doubts and have to take a leap of faith. Cobb also probably struggled with taking a leap of faith and staying with children because Mal was dead and he felt guilty. The first time in the film where he spins the top, he is struggling here with staying alive (I mean, he holds a gun thinking about suicide), but his kids whether real or not keep him tethered to what we call reality. He is torn between his kids and his wife. So Cobb causes himself to take a leap of faith and be with his kids and choose to believe they are real and he has to choose to believe that Mal is dead (and not in a lower dream level or in true reality), but the only way for him to stay with his kids and accept Mal's death is to overcome his guilt. It is easy to see the film as he is doing this heist thing to get back to his kids, but what he is doing is going through is a struggle shown as a heist movie where he is convincing himself to let go of his wife and the guilt of that and stay with his kids. If we were in his situation, it would be easy to think of killing ourselves because it could mean he could be with his wife in a possible real world. He is not certain of this possible world and if he killed himself he may be truly leaving his kids and not just projections. So he has to go through the steps of forgiving himself from the guilt and have faith that these kids are real in reality and Mal is truly dead. He has two paths (stay with kids who may not be real or kill himself where he might be with Mal) and he chooses what we all choose, the thing we are more certain of and what we can already see so he chooses his kids. Also, at the end, the kids say they are building a house on a cliff. Are they talking about their home? The house Saito had in limbo? It doesn't matter, but this shows that they are not in reality. How? Well, in Cobb's flashback of his and Mal's time in limbo, they are playing in the sand making buildings and as they crush the sand buildings, the buildings of limbo fall behind them. I believe these 2 scenes parallel pointing to that Cobb is not in reality in the end.

Fantastic analysis, also some evidence for the characters being his projections is the fact that we see a projection version of Browning in fishers dream in the second layer. He’s made him up completely based on manipulation from Cobb. Making it completely possible to make projections that the dreamer interacts with and is convinced are real. As well as the simple fact that his kids don’t age, their positions never change, could be stylistic choice, but it should be debated if done deliberately to show that his kids are projections built from his unchanging memory of them.

This theory just resolved the problem I've always had with Cobb's kids seemingly not having aging when they'd all reunited--had Cobb actually been away from them for an appreciable amount of time, then they would have aged (they always sounded as if they had on the phone), but if he had been stuck in the dream the whole time, then the aging wasn't real (i.e., the phone call happened in the dream where he projected them aging) and when he reunited with them finally, they really would have appeared as if they hadn't aged because Cobb had actually been in a dream where very little time had passed in the real world. Thanks!!!!

My theory is his totem is not the top but his wedding ring. He only wears it in his dream and never in real life. I think he wouldn't want people to know his real totem so he fakes them out with the top (hes a very paranoid person). Something I haven’t heard any theories pick up on: the top is not Cobb’s totem; it’s Mal’s. By nature of the fact that he’s touched someone else’s totem changes the storyline, further reinforcing that he doesn’t have an accurate depiction of what is reality and what is a dream.
@CeltycSparrow
@CeltycSparrow Жыл бұрын
I DO agree with you, but I think you've missed a crucial thread of proof that Dom was truly at peace at the end and has let go of Mal and he was not trapped in the dream world. If we consider the rules that are established about the totems, we are told that each person's totem is unique to them. As the story unfolds, we see that everyone on Cobb’s team possesses a unique totem, which they carry with them into the dream. The purpose of these totems is to allow the totem’s owner to discern when they are in the dream and when they have returned to the real world. They cannot allow anyone else to touch their special totems because if someone else touches it, the dreamer will never be sure of its behavior and will lose track of the reality (which is what I think happened to Mal. Dom touched her totem...the spinning top....and she lost track of reality. So if we takes this as absolute truth, and these are the rules of the totems, then I don't think the spinning top is Dom's totem at all. Indeed, he even SAYS its not his totem, but his wife, Mal's. So it wouldn't work for Dom anyway. But if your paying attention, you can see Dom's REAL totem....his wedding ring....which he wears in each of the dreams, but NOT in reality (because his reality is that Mal is dead and he is no longer married to her. The other rule for Dom is, he DOES NOT look at his children's faces when he sees them in the dreams. At the end, if you look VERY CAREFULLY, you will notice that Dom is NOT wearing the wedding ring in the scene when he is finally reunited with his children....signifying, by the rules THEY established, that this moment is real and not a dream. Also, this is the first time Dom allows himself to see the children's faces and he goes to hug them. Again....signifying that this moment is real. Also, Michael Caine has said that his character is only there in reality and not in the dreams and we see him in this moment with Dom and the children. So I would say that them focusing on the spinning top is a misdirect for us as the audience. They want us to wonder is he still in the dream or has he broken into reality, but if you look at the truth (based on the rules they established), you will see that Dom is finally free.

There were two Inceptions. The Saito plot was real, and a secondary Inception occurred, in a similar manner, to Cobb, who now believes that he did grow old with Mal. Just like Fisher, Cobb’s own subconscious fed him the idea leading to his own catharsis

This film deserves a 2nd part. There is clue I found. When Cobb is in the hotel waiting for the helicopter. He receives a call from his kids and the kids voice seem older. Cuz phillipa. Says grandma says your never coming back. In the memory that he has of her she looks very young 4 or 5 years old. And I have kids . I KNOW and a kids that age doesn't sound like that. And in the credits. There are two little girls playing the same role. One younger and one older. The same for James. So cobb ends up in his dream/memory. Because they are the same age as in his dream. In reality they have to be older. They can't be the same age after those few years apart from them.

Having put the idea of having something in your life compared to what you had is a different story altogether, Cobb fell for his own con. He did after all say he did inception to his wife but he was also present. His team were there to rescue him but they failed, the evidence was the totem in the safe and also at the end when he puts it on the table, he was still dreaming.

@bgbrixton
@bgbrixton 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I also think it's possible Saito is actually Mal. The spinning top was Mal's totem and never Cobbs. Cobbs was his ring. This also means that the ending actually is really sad because they fail and Cobb continues/resigns himself to living in that dream by refusing to pay attention to the top( Which, again was never his totem)
@bgbrixton
@bgbrixton 4 жыл бұрын
Also if Saito is actually Mal. Then when Saito picks up the top it is actually just Mal picking up her own totem. Which would be such a Nolan move.
@ctorres228
@ctorres228 4 жыл бұрын
@@bgbrixton I hadn't considered this but that's a really good point about Saito and the totem. But I still see it as a hopeful ending though. Him ignoring the totem means he is no longer using it as a measure of his reality. The only measure is the truth inside of him which he has now accepted.

That’s interesting, but the hotel room behind Mal isn’t mirror because it isn’t trashed. She probably rented a separate one so she could talk Cobb into jumping with her without him stopping her. I think the real proof is the children. They would have had to go down a lot of levels for it be like a convenient one night of babysitting. They spent 50 years down there, meaning they would have had to go down many levels or they’re neglecting their children.

The very first clue to Cobb's alienation to reality was dropped before the movie was released. Namely Nolan convinced Scorcese to film Shutter Island earlier that year, in which an even less stable Cobb thinks he is a detective solving a murder case in a cast off jail.

Here’s my problem with the theory. What is the motivation? Just to help Cobb out of the kindness of their hearts? You call them his friends and family, but that’s not really the case. They’re colleagues with little to no apparent personal connection. Saito, who initiates the mission, seems to be little more than a greedy businessman with, again, no personal connection to Cobb. Wouldn’t this theory require him to be willing to risk going into limbo just to… help Cobb deal with regret?

If the whole movie was a dream inside of Cobb's mind, then we actually don't know the true relationship of those people to Cobb. We literally might have only seen them once, at the end of the movie. In the dream, they were free to take on different relationships. If it wasn't Cobb's dream, then why was Mal even present? It's even stated that he can't design the dream, otherwise she would be there. Well, he didn't design it, and she was always there, at the deepest point even. The entire world they built together was there too... In someone else's dream? That's not possible, unless it's actually Cobb's dream. This is the only explanation that even makes sense. I just came across it tonight, but I find it inescapable.

Why can’t it be both? Ariadne was hired by Michael Caine’s character to incept an idea into Cobb’s mind while she was also hired by Cobb to incept an idea into the heir’s mind, freeing him from legal retribution in the US. Because if Mal really did set him up in reality and he had to flee the US, then he’d need more than idea and emotional catharsis. He’d need legal pardon or some way to live in the US again without incarceration. Caine helps Cobb find emotional catharsis so that he can emotionally return to his children, while this last job also doubles as a legal way to return to his children. I think Caine saw an opportunity and took it because he knew Cobb would confront Mal in this job. The reason I think the job is real has to do with Cobb’s totem. Cobb wears his wedding ring in reality scenes but not in dream sequences; this differentiation seems to be a signal to the audience, since Cobb himself doesn’t acknowledge it. This video says that there wouldn’t be any strings you can pull to get out of murder, but Nolan plays on the suspension of disbelief as well as some realities. Great sums of money do buy political/legal power in some instances; Nolan makes it clear that Saito is filthy rich. Also, the coroner’s report would show that Mal jumped from the opposite window versus being pushed to her death. He might not even need a pardon. Although this movie doesn’t go into the details, I doubt Nolan is counting on his audience knowing legal particularities. Rather, he counts on us to fill in the gaps with our belief that Cobb’s deal was fulfilled.
