I really don't see anything wrong with adding to a painting (original, print, or mass-produced). If it ended up at a thrift store, it's probably destined for a landfill. By taking it home and adding to it, you're giving it new a life! If I had the skill to add ghosts to a painting in a way that matched the original style, that painting would become part of my Halloween decor for the rest of my life. I don't paint, but I can only hope the art I do make can give others joy after I'm gone, even if its a random person at the thrift store looking for something to DIY. 😊

I found an original framed cheap lithograph in a charity shop here in the UK. It was easy enough to take out of it’s frame and copy it with my printer several times (useful for trying out different effects). I have had a bit of fun adding various ghostly additions without harming the original. 👻🙂

@@nikkibrown1191 what's the big deal about getting whatever number of likes? I never understood that. Is everyone so starved for attention that they expect other people to give them a sense of meaning or value? You have worth and value because you are alive. Learn to love yourself. Because not everyone else will. Nor should you expect them to. That's normal. Don't let that bother you. What other people think of you should have no bearing on how you think about yourself. They don't know you. If you are a good person you already know that.

The thing is that a lot of the paintings you see people paint over in those thrift store videos are mass produced. I don’t know if it’s still done, but it used to be a thing where certain artists would have a whole studio full or people trained to paint exactly like them. So they’d make an original and then have these artists paints thousands of copies to be sold to people for home decor. And they’d all be signed with the same “company” name so-to-speak.

For filming angle the blinds slightly down, the room light isn’t to intense and wont give you the "light lines" but if im painting (and not filming) ill angle the blinds slightly up, still no "light lines" but the room light is brighter. I crochet and I see crochet/handmade things in goodwill all the time. Sometimes that makes me sad but mostly I’m happy that someone gets to experience it for less and it gets to live on past the trash. I love seeing ppl make bags or clothes out of them too. Same with quilts. It’s so cool to me. So I don’t mind the idea of ghost painting. But there are other ppl who would be livid if their crochet work left their family or ever left the person for which it was intended, let alone if it was cut up and given a new life or unwound for yarn. I’m just not personally that way. I don’t have time to be worried about what ppl are doing with their personal belongings. If I did I wouldn’t hand it over to someone else in the first place. Ya know?

I create nonsense all the time. Art, quilts, crochet etc. when I die I have absolutely no clue what will happen to any of it. There’s no one to leave it to and I can’t imagine anyone would want any of it, but it seems a waste for it all to go straight to landfill without any opportunity for someone to grab it. I also don’t want to have to give up my horde while I’m alive, and due to indifferent health I have less idea than most of likely life expectancy. So I don’t realistically feel like a Swedish death cleaning approach is for me either. There will be no loved one going through my house to be considerate of. This video has made me think though. I’m wondering if I can set up a will which specifies a house clearance company has to try and sell hand made stuff rather than bin it. I wish I could think of someone who could be an executor. I can’t even think who to leave any value in my estate to, the cost of hiring a lawyer to do the work of disposing of assets would wipe out any value and any beneficiary I could think of isn’t up to the job of disposing of assets! Dying is hard work and it might be decades away yet…I need a lie down.

@@dees3179You could leave your textile crafts and functional crafts to a shelter or charity. They can keep people in need warm clothed and loved. Social workers need stuff like blankets and stuffed animals they can give children that are being placed in care. Having something of your own that you can take with you wherever you are placed means a lot to children in the system. People who go through disasters need stuff to rebuild. Kids who deal with distasters and loose everything love having something they can love and call their own again.

My house was the contractors original work buuuut I had a different vision. So I took down a wall and a bunch of trim and changed it. I sew patches to thrifted items or paint or dye them. I don’t really see an issue with painting over original art especially if you’re only just tweaking or adding to it. Fully painting over canvas to start your own painting- like, I get it because it’s economical but that does gut me. Instead of being a collaboration with the original artist you’re just erasing it. I did something similar a few years ago for an Ugly Art Auction fundraiser. I bought two “scenic” thrift store prints, one of a Thomas Kinkaid-type house and one of a ship in a harbor. I added kraken arms pulling the ship under and tiny people swimming away, and a volcano exploding in the back of the scenic house with fire bombs falling from the sky. Together they raised $350 for the fundraiser, as the kraken became a bidding war and the women who won the volcano wanted the pair.

As an art historian *and* artist: I don't see problems with either route. using a Reprint is what Duchamp did with the Mona Lisa and hung it up in the museum to poke fun at the seriousness of the art world, but there's also Robert Rauschenberg that literally took sketches from other artists (like Kolonie), erased most of them and hung it up in a museum to experiment with what is considered art (Yes he did get permission from the artists themselves but I think he didn't say *what* he was going to do with them, but they knew they were going to be altered in some way). So you're continuing their legancy either way. Also restoration is a slippery slope because sometimes if they're a private restorer.... it becomes a super gray area because it's what the client wants and not what the art historian wants. If the Client tells you to keep the painted over peice instead the more valuable, priceless historical peice underneath.... then you keep the peice that is above the valuable one.

However, it would probably just easier to use a blank canvas at that point. For this trend, you are literally just adding to something that is already created and then calling it your own. It is kind of like those group projects in school where everyone else does the work and you add a slide or two to the presentation and take credit for the full thing.

I’m not a fan of painting over originals. It’s a waste. I cringe and I don’t watch the videos. Someone did put their hard earned creative work into that piece. Just because the person who had it or was gifted it died, which is usually the case, or had to sell for other reasons doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be appreciated. Painting over it, even in part just eliminates someone else being able appreciate the original art. I like the idea better than painting over an original, but honestly see little point in going to the store and buying a new or used print to paint over in part or totally, either. I understand its a bit of a challenge and definitely support that notion over an original. But really buying a canvas, board, or something and paint an original creation sounds way more appealing to me. I’d rather see an original piece than an adapting one too, even if the original imitates the other. It’s just more interesting to me.

I love the overall look but my problem is the dementors head, he looks like he's just come from the barbers & had a short back & sides! Dementors heads are more hooded with less neck & more grunge.

He isn’t supposed to be a full blown dementor! Partly ghost, human, dementor, Tim Burton esque creature :)

I feel bad painting over original art but most of the time what I find at the thrift store is replicas of original art so I feel like that’s fine

If i were going to do a dementor on a backdrop loke that my tool of choice would of been either chauck pastels or charcoal and a eraser for that weightless feeling they seem to give off

I think it came out great adding the little ghosts! When you said you were going to put dementors in the sky, for some reason my head thought of dalaks from Doctor Who instead and then I was confused for a minute why the painted wasn't Doctor Who themed.😅

I remember when Jazza first did a painting on top of a painting and I felt so appalled that he would deface the work of another artist. I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

I think if you put a sceletor face, just a shadow of cheek bone and eye socket that would make it less human like. But it's a great idea, love it.

I feel if it's an original, like the actual painting, then absolutely not. But if it's a print then I say go for it

I really like the painting that you chose from target and how the overall picture turned out. Do you think you can do a video when you make art but using pointillism? Thank you! You are very talented keep it up! 😍😄🤩

I like yours, especially that it was a mass type of painting wasn't one of a kind like some feel like and you had a great idea (dementors!) And then made it happen. Felt more like a dyi Halloween craft idea. The ghost paintings do as well, but some I can't help but cringe at thinking omg that's potentially vintage and worth money and you might have destroyed it! Why would you do that! Others its oh its a copy thats okay....
