Bulan and Haliya are twins and they have 5 other siblings. They are the Seven Moon Deities, the seven phases of the moon. Felip's Bulan logo is according to Bulan and Haliya phases. Haliya is a warrior goddess, she masked herself and fights with a sword with Bakunawa her arch enemy. Bakunawa swallowed their other siblings because it was attracted to their beautiful lights. Bulan was swallowed but was saved by Haliya, both fought back. The stories of Bulan, Haliya and Bakunawa have some differences in each region of the Philippines.

The story of Bulan is the ethnic explanation for the differences in the phases of the moon and the reason for an eclipse. In olden times every time a lunar eclipse happens, people would try to drive away the serpent that was swallowing the moon by making a lot of noise thus the gong you hear at the end of the song.

There is a youtube reactor named Cashual Chuck who made a short video about Bulan. It'll give you a brief background about the story of the moon god, the sea serpent, the lady in red and the significance of the gong sound at the end of Felip's video.

Felip’s other solo song project “Palayo” is a totally different vibe from “Bulan” and is also awesome. You guys should check it out, too. The thing about these songs and their MVs by Felip are that he composes and writes them and conceptualizes the MV himself. BTW, the chanting at the start and middle of the song was done the main vocalist of SB19 (Stell). They’re a family, they help each other out. That’s one thing I like about SB19.

In the 1st scene, Bulan was the mortal who forgot about himself being a Moon God. Upon touching the water everything came back to his memory. He was the last Moon God alive but found out Haliyah his sister (whose in a red veil dancing calmly) was also alive. The Sea serpent was the one who devour their 5 siblings to death(the 7 of them were a Moon Gods & Goddess). He remind her sister to be aware and open her eyes coz the serpent was again awake and ready to attack them. And he never let it happened coz he know that he is Bulan the Moon God. The melody of the song has anger and rage. The metaphor of it represent, the 3 characters, the siblings Bulan & Haliyah (urself & ur support/family/friends) were the protector of each other and the serpent was the evil (the enemies in any form a person or a thing any negativity, a toxic basher etc) who will devour ur light. Or u can be the 3 persona within urself. U have an inner evil inside of u that will devour ur own light. So u have to fought the battle in urself. Just rember all ur strength and always have faith in it.

Filipinos were animistic people for centuries before any colonialists came in. All objects have spirits or were inhabited by spirits of deity. Like there’s God from the sea, wind, thunders, wind, fire, rocks, trees etc. This were pass on to every generations.

Sheeshhh...thank u so much for checking on Felip/Ken's craft as well guys!🙏here's a word from Felip about his Bulan: I've always been fond of our culture, especially ancient Filipino culture and mythology. Like the story of Bulan, Haliya, and the Bakunawa. I thought it would be good to explore the subject. It worked out well because the story is a good metaphor for what I was writing, about crab mentality and how other people try to tear down those who are trying to pursue their dreams. Bakunawa tries to swallow the light but thankfully fails to do so. "Bulan" talks about recognizing that powerful being within you and not letting other people consume your light. It shows the darker, more confrontational side of self-love. Because sometimes, the negativity gets too loud to ignore and the only way to get rid of it is to acknowledge the power that you hold and face it head-on.
@raindropsnrosesnposes2 жыл бұрын
Felip used the three characters here as a metaphor. *Bulan, the moon god* - depicting light as one's success or goodness within. *Bakunawa, the sea serpent/dragon* - is the protagonist, who wants to swallow the light. Depicting as someone who wants to bring you down or the darkness within you that wants to overcome your light (Felip's explanation from an interview) *Haliyah, the moon goddess (Bulan's twin)* - the protector/savior of Bulan from Bakunawa These three are the main characters from the Filipino Visayan Myth.

The Harvest Moon,wow!You have a different take on this song; very interesting. But then SB19 always say their songs mean different things to different people and no single interpretation has an exclusive right to its meaning.I'd like to share what this song means in the context of the mythology that inspired it but I don't want to spoil it for you until you have watched Cashual Chuck's vlogg or Felip's interview.

There are 7 phases of the moon, and two of them happen to be Bulan and Haliya. Bulan and Haliya are two out of the seven sibling moon god and goddess that represent the two crescent moons (if you notice, the logo of the song, it's two crescent moons intertwined). Each phase of the moon have a name and represent a god. LONG story short, the Bakunawa (the sea serpent/dragon) tries to swallow the moon creating the eclipse. It was attracted to their light, and it successfully swallowed the other siblings, Bulan and Haliya remained. The two often protect each other. In the song, Bulan warns Haliya "Open your eyes, and don't let Bakunawa swallow your light." The Bakunawa disappears when there is a loud sound. If you noticed at the end of the MV, there's a gong sound, and the Bakunawa is no longer seen. Also, our ancestors were always loud banging their pots and pans, and doing tribal chants so the Bakunawa won't be attempted to swallow the moon. Hope this all makes sense. There are different versions of our ancient mythology/deities. This version is what i gathered from a Filipino historian who has a youtube channel, Kirby Araullo.
