Not traveling but my husband and I were at the grocery store and a young woman with her little son were in front of us. Her food stamps card wasn’t going through and she was having to leave the store without any groceries and she was embarrassed and about to cry. We told the cashier we’d pay for her groceries and my husband went and got her and brought her back inside. She was so appreciative kept saying we didn’t have to do that. We didn’t have to but we wanted to. We all have to help each other out when we can. Nothing feels better.

Wasn't on the street, but a friend and I took a car service to the airport on our way to a cruise. I was using a cane, my friend had a walker, and of course a fair bit of luggage. Our driver didn't just drop us off - he got a luggage cart for us, took it inside, just went above and beyond Normally, I"d have given him a 20% tip, but I upped it, handing him a $50. He was startled - "did you know this was a $50?" he asked. "Yes," I said, "thanks for your help." He was so happy.

Kindness to others a blessing to them and ourselves. We were in a port and got a bit lost. A lady with her two children came up to us and she told us to follow her. We did and she said that we were not in a good area. She went out of her way for us. She got us to the local market. She would not take any money, and we thanked her and we did buy two mugs from her. Looking at those mugs, reminds me how kind people are all over this world, that we ALL live in.

Today Don, you gave joy and received joy!!! Pure joy :) amazing isn’t it? It’s as you said, people in Portugal, they make a living, generally, a simple living and they provide the basics and necessities for their families but the extras, the enrichment experiences like field trips or sport training or piano lessons, etc. most regular people can’t afford. As my husband always says, ‘good out, good in’. Thank you for telling this story because I felt the joy too through your retelling of the experience.

Don, you did a wonderful thing. I don’t think you got scammed. With me having mobility issues the past four years, I’ve been on the receiving end of strangers’ kindness. Airport personnel have been so kind, finding the shortest lines, letting me board first due to slowness (severely arthritic knees). Just had a knee replacement and even experienced a stranger’s kindness - little things like picking up a dropped pen or holding a door for me in a walker. These little acts of kindness are huge, but what you did was extraordinary. I hope when I’m done with physical therapy and all healed, I can pay it forward ❤. The world needs more kindness.

So glad you gave 20 and the additional 20! It is a wonderful thing to perform small acts of generosity that can make a difference 40 Euros is a lot for those kids, and I agree, scam or for real, it doesn't matter. I lent a friend who really needed it $500. I could afford it and when she came by to repay me I told her she didn't have to. I'll never forget the look on her face. As a young girl walking with my mother in NYC there were, as now, many down on their luck. I had pocket change and reached for some coins and my mother scolded me. I asked her why and she said, "you'll just encourage them." I was just a little kid but this didn't sit well with me and ever since, in defiance of her I have always given pocket money to those in need, and to buskers, and it always makes me feel good for the opportunity to help a stranger, even just a little.

Just finished dinner at an expensive restaurant in New Orleans and came upon two elderly homeless men. We didn't have any cash, but asked if they would like our leftovers and untouched desserts. They said yes. As we walked away they "high-fived" each other and were very excited when they opened the boxes.

I had somewhat similar experience in Guatemala. I wanted to practice my Spanish and haggling skills, so I went to the market to buy a t-shirt. The salesperson was about 9 years old and he wanted $20 for the shirt. I was able to haggle the price down to $10, but the boy was really funny during the process, as if he was playing a comedy role in a movie. So I gave him the $10 for the shirt and another $10 for him to keep for himself. He had a reaction similar to the boys in the story.

When visiting Cuba by cruise ship, during the brief time it was legal to do so, a dear friend of mine began to negotiate with a street vendor for an item which, as I recall, was about two or three dollars American. The street vendor said it all... "You have so much and we have so little. Will a few cents make a difference to you?" Hearing this was very sobering! While I still enjoy negotiating, I'll often pay the negotiated price AND THEN, pay additional and thank the vendor for the fun of the give and take.
