Lance Hoppen, original co-founding member of Orleans, here. Thanks so much for posting and LOVING this song! I was 18 when the band started. I'll be 69 in January. So nice to know fresh ears still respond so well to Still the One. Yes, it was a top 5 hit in '76, became the ABC TV theme song for '77-'78 and since then has been used in countless local and national TV/radio commercial campaigns, movies, TV shows and even political campaigns (both major parties). Probably why Amber said it sounded "familiar" :-) The stellar lead singer was my older brother, Larry, who passed suddenly in 2012. The co-writer (along with his former wife and writing partner, Johanna Hall) was John Hall. Guitars were by John and Larry, who also played the Fender Rhodes piano. The band has been through many changes over the years yet we still perform live now and into 2023, at least. You can find a wealth of video at our OrleansOnline channel, learn anything you might want to know about our history at OrleansOnline.net and interact with us on Facebook at Orleansmusic. The 70s had so many good love songs. But now my fav songs are bout the Lord Jesus Christ He has given me so much peace Known that he died for every ones sins past present and future. taking every one's shame and guilt we have ALL SINED AND FALL SHORT. But only if you put ALL YOUR trust in him alone, He was the one that died a horrible death to cover all our sins past present and future Because sin cannot be in Heaven. I hope he gives you peace knowing you don't have to go to Hell for ever but be with in Heaven for ever with him. This is the best news you will ever hear.

John Hall of Orleans explained how the song came to be written in the liner notes to the Best of Orleans CD: "A friend of ours was going through a divorce and asked Johanna (Hall's wife and lyricist) to write a song about a couple staying together. So she did, and she handed me the finished lyric on the back of an envelope and said, 'Do you think you can do anything with this?' I wrote the music to it in 10 minutes, which was a good sign." In the late '70s, ABC's slogan was "Still The One," and the network used different versions of this song in their promotional campaigns. Many renditions were recorded by studio singers - often with female vocalists - for the spots.

Someone may have already mentioned this: the song “Still The One” by Orleans was used by the ABC television network to promote their programming back around 1977. During that timeframe, ABC had been flying high in the ratings and so the title of the song was used to underscore the fact that ABC was “still the one” to watch. Some of those ABC promotional ads are posted on KZbin, so you can do a search for those. Suggested song titles are "Let There Be Music", "Dance With Me", "Reach", "You"ve Given Me Something". From upstate NY, they were on the way to star status when the journey was interrupted by the death of founding member and creative force Wells Kelly. John Hall and wife Johanna were principal songwriters, and both John and Larry Hoppen (lead singer on Still the One) were killer guitar players...both played on that double lead in Still the One.

One of the greatest rock songs ever. Love the harmony, the theme, but probably one of the most underappreciated aspects of this song is its lyrical variety. There's so little repetition other than the main chorus lines. It is so creative and refreshing.

You guys are so loveable. You will love this. Orleans rocks with this song. You two will be too young to remember when ABC used this song as a promo back in the 70’s. How many 70’s fans out there do I have?

In 15-20 years from now, you two should play this song for each other.

Be-yooooooo-tiful production, arrangement, instrumentations, lead vocal, and harmonies. WOW. I've loved this song for decades -- ever since it was on the Top 40 when I was in high school. And it still sounds as fresh as ever.

I think you did "Dance With Me". Their other big hit would be "Love Takes Time". "Still The One" was used by TV network ABC when I was a kid during the late seventies to promote their lineup. One of my all time favorites.

Songs from back in the Day had lyrics… We all sang to the songs, not just like them or dance to them. They stay in bedded in our memory that I can even remember these lyrics today!

Growing up in southwest Oklahoma, I only listened to country but heard this song all the time ehen it was used as an advertizement by the KSWO television station. I never knew it was a real song until years later. Everytine I hear this song, I think of that station ad.

For some more harmonies, please dive into Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and sometimes Neil Young). It’s a great rabbit hole!

Yes, Yes please. Someone replied to a request for them. Not sure Young is in this one but Suite: Judy Blue Eyes would be a great choice!

Great song. Have been trying to think of bands you still need to hear - how about Blood Sweat, & Tears? You've Made me so Very Happy or Spinning Wheel could be a place to start.

Guys, the reason the guitar solo sounds so distinctive is because there are two guitars, harmonised together. It's one of their trademarks.

The other song you heard was, " Dance with Me ". I heard this song at a concert before the show on a $50,000 sound system -- SO GOOD !!! You HAVE to listen to this song LOUD while you're driving -- it will bring a smile to your face EVERY time !!!!

Jay and Amber, you gotta check out "Hocus Pocus by Focus" (Midnight special edition). You might just love it, it will take about a week to get over it, but worth it.
The lead singer was Larry Hoppen. On the album cover he's the fourth to the right, round face and beard. May he rip.

@@lindakinninger5500 I agree. But my song choices are very eclectic. I'd like for them to put a little more country in their reactions. Not new country, because I can't stand it.

The deep voiced man was singing throughout the entire song, his voice blended well with the others. It was made prominent at exactly the right moment. I grew up listening to this song. I love seeing people react to songs the first time. It takes me back to when it was new to me. ABC used this song in their commercials promoting their programming line up when it was still fairly new which helped in its popularity.

John Hall, who co-wrote this song with his then wife, was my congressman for a number of years, and I met him a few times. He credits the royalties he still collects with making it possible to live comfortably. He's the deeper voice doing harmonies, but he does perform this from time to time as a soloist.
