you have such a great farrier, you do everything you can to keep him healthy and happy. I have seen so many that completely freak out because a horse that has never seen a farrier won't stay still. They then hit him with their tools and so on. So many horses are traumatized by farriers and only let their hooves be trimmed with strong medication. But he takes his time and is patient. Sometimes he makes impossible things possible. He also thinks outside the box and finds the best for the horse. Thank you that you can still find something like that today

Yes.. I have seen other rescues, that give their horses sedation, before the farrier will work

@3_times_mum520 sometimes the horses haven't been handled and it's necessary. I have seen Pony Tales work with their horses to train them to stand for the farrier. Sometimes you have to medicate to get started when time doesn't allow them to wait.

I highly recommend investing in one to protect yourself along with your farrier and vet. The halter didn't hurt them it was used on a pressure and release concept. Good luck

Any of the Magic Cushion products are excellent! We use the sole pack at night after showing. They are in a stall. Just slap some on their sole and slap a handful of shavings on top and it really calms the sole down. Since you’re so diligent about everyone’s grain, You could also get some Farriers Formula and put a couple scoops in each horses feed. It is an amazing product. For the ones that need to toughen their soles, paint them with Venice Turpentine. Pauly probably knows this. It’s a little old school but always helped my horses. They use manuka honey in Europe for thrush☺️. Love trying new remedies. Also, extra supplement that helps with weight gain without being a hot or sugary feed is Cool Calories and Coco Soya oil. Check them out. You guys do great work. Bless you😊

I mean he doesn't have to come do the shelter, there are so few farriers I'm sure he could get plenty of work without it. But he does. There’s a channel called Homestead horsemanship. He’s dealing with a really bad case of canker on a 20 year old Clydesdale somebody gave him. The stuff he has been going through trying to cure this canker are using some type of an antibiotic tablet that 22:17 he crushes up and packs in the hoof then he then uses copper tox and uses granular copper and he packs it in the hoof. He then puts a baby diaper over it that wraps that on with vet wrap then he has a pad that they make out of duct tape I think it’s probably three or four layers thick that they put on the bottom of the hoof and wrap it up. it up he does this every other day.. The vet said it is a combination of a yeast infection and bacterial infection and that he doesn’t hold out too much hope but it seems to not be getting any worse. Anyway, you should check it out. it looks exactly like you got with that horse they call it canker or kanker i’m not sure how it’s spelled. I forgot to mention before he does all this he cleans the hoof and puts it in a big rubber bucket and soaked it for 10 minutes in strong Epson salts. He sure to clean all the tools with bleach in between hooves, so it doesn’t spread.

@19:50 - epsom salt is magnesium, which is essential for nail growth in people. Hoof is keratin too, right? So it makes sense that daily Epsoms salt soaks would grow the hoof. You might even try this on horses that are slow to grow hoof. Hoof trimmers for cows use iodine to harden up hoof. So the two things combined might be the reason her feet have grown so much.

really feel for everyone being so harshly criticised lately, especially the young girls. I think people need to start showing other people the same sympathy they show animals. Even great trainers, like Steve who everyone likes to suggest (because all they actually know are KZbinrs), make mistakes and he'd own up to them too. These girls are trying their best and learning as they go. Give them some grace and allow them to learn and gain confidence around misbehaving horses. it's not easy especially when you've seen horses behave the way I'm sure they have. at the end of the day these horses are better of at pony tales with these careers than the traders/kill buyers bidding against them, as I can take a guess none of the people complaining are there trying to buy them instead!

I do believe many of us do watch the same rescues and programs. Homestead Horsemenship is like others have said currently treating Clydesdale given to them with long standing bad Kancor and yes there are many different things one can try and it seems that you have to keep trying until you find the right treatment. It is a long winded time to treat, can also be pretty expensive for all the concoctions and wraps and tape etc. One thing I have learned from the whole process is it is IMPERITIVE to keep it from spreading in your barns and turnouts. ALL items used, tools, buckets etc must be cleaned with antifungal/bacterial cleaners, the stalls must be kept pristine clean, I see them using heavy duty gloves during treatment and washing hands very well afterwards. I think it has been said that even putting a horse with Kancor in the same pastures can spread it all over your place. Scary stuff and nothing to mess around with.

I've often wondered if the habit of doing hoof work in the aisles with horses in the stalls isn't counterproductive? The horse is basically hobbled during the process and surrounded by horses they most likely don't know so are anxious. Would the horses be calmer if there weren't other horses about?

Molly has Canker is similar, but a more serious condition than thrush. Although it is rare, unlike thrush it can be difficult to solve. It is a severe bacterial/fungal infection (proliferative pododermatitis) that generally originates in the frog, and affects the heels, horn and underlying structures of the hoof

Thanks Pony Tales. I am hoping that a certain person who made snarky, know-it-all comments on a previous video, will eventually figure out that you are not a commercial outfit that gets paid so that all the pretty horses stay in their pretty little stalls, with shiny tack, fluffy pads and perfectly fitting saddles while they rent their horses like people rent cars or apartments. Perhaps that person needs to find out what it is like to be a Rescue. I bet she would not last one week in your shoes. I worked at the local SPCA years ago. We had nothing but volunteers. Sometimes there were many, sometimes only a couple of us to all more than 35 dogs morning and night because we had no land and no large area to let them play while we cleaned the less than adequate kennels. If one does the math, it meant these dogs of all sizes, most of them untrained to walk on a leash, would get less than 15 minutes per dog because we had many other things to take care of. Now, after many years, that no-kill shelter was able to get more financing and a new facility that houses many more dogs, cats, bunnies, guinea pigs, etc. Does it look clean and spit and polish all the time? Nope, but it is clean, safe and caring. Pony Tales has accomplished much more than many people realize. We all learn new things all the time and your accomplishments show that you have, no only learned, but are always willing to learn more and do more for the sake of those horses. Keep your heads high people!🤩

Man. I thought Pauly was heading to the ER for a minute there. Wow. But he's got some nasty bruises after that. It's a shame so many horses weren't taught basic ground manners when they were young. It's likely the reason so many have such awful feet. They're just too difficult to deal with and people give up. I've been dreading hearing "we've done all we can, and it's not helping" with Daphne for some time now. I remember when she came in, pregnant with Miles, and everyone thought she'd have to be let go after she gave birth. It's so sad Miles didn't make it, but I'm astonished Daphne has lasted this long. It speaks volumes for the lengths you and Pauly have gone to to keep her as comfortable as possible. I'm so glad these horses got a soft landing with Pony Tales. You guys are real heroes.

Was exactly like this, mushy and smelled really bad. And we couldn’t get it away ourselves and we tried for maaaany months. Just a little trick that has served me well through 50 years of horse ownership. If you have a horse that knows how to behave for the farrier, but is being a brat anyway, I start messing with their muzzle and sticking my finger into the corner of their mouth. It seems to shift their focus back to the handler instead of the farrier and has worked more often than not for me. Obviously, it's not likely to help with the really naughty ones, but it usually does with one that's just rechecking the boundaries and it's easier than getting jerked around so worth a try.
