If a show like this giving an artist 10 minutes showtime doesn't prove to the world just how massive he was, I don't know what does...remember this clearly first time it came out. I was 8. People went crazy for him all the way up until the end it was surreal.

That was Little Richard at the end with the dark glasses, one of true pioneers of Rock and Roll. Right when Michael bought the Beatles catalog and a slew of other songs he gave Little Richards his back his catalog and a lot of other Black musicians who were robbed of the creations and contributions to world music.

His vocals in Human Nature at Wembley 1988 are all live and are INSANE! His best performance in my opinion. The grammy performances usually are lipsync as a rule of the producers, but I guess this one is half and a half.

In 1988 and throughout the 1980s we were spoilt with so much amazing stuff. We didn't realise how lucky we were at the time as we just ate it and expected it to never end. Looking back, we should have appreciated it all more than we did.

Yeah until the technical problem he was lip syncing man in the mirror. The way you make me feel was completely not live I mean he didn’t even tried to hide it he had no mic or anything. So the end was completely live BUT you have to remember that Mj was on tour at that time (Bad tour 1987-1989) and in the tour he sang completely live so I understand he had to protect his voice. It’s a wonder that he even attended and performed. He got the privilege of doing anything he wants. That's the respect you get for giving 25 years worth of live performances and music before hitting 30. He could've slept on stage he had nothing to prove at that point as a 30 year veteran. Greatest of all time👑
@goldencherry9033
@goldencherry9033 11 ай бұрын
It wasn’t a technical problem, it was when he was due to start to singing live. They just didn’t switch the mic up at the right time. He does that a lot - lip syncs then transitions to live for the end of songs to ad lib etc.

This is one of my favorite Michael Jackson performances. I recommend you watch it again just for yourself, because trying to take it all in the first time is really hard... During TWYMMF he has such insane swag, sex appeal, precision... it's utterly perfect. The re-recording of the song was done in a hotel room in Florida when he was rehearsing for the second leg of the Bad tour. The sound engineers lined mattresses around the walls of a room to create the "studio" effect so he could record this. According to Brad Sundberg, his media tech, Michael was obsessed with this intro. During Man in the Mirror, Michael is singing underneath the track the entire time, which is why he is so phenomenal at lip syncing. He is *actually* singing the entire time he performs. However, when the mic cuts out briefly, it is actually switching to a live mic feed. I'm not convinced people would even realize he was lip-syncing the first half if it wasn't for this technical glitch. His live voice is perfection and the passion, tone, grit, beauty is unmatched. The ad-libs he does are so powerful too. "Black man gotta make the change, the white man gotta make the change..." singing this as a person who was the victim of a racist media his entire life. Singing this as the most global superstar in history. Michael was bold and fearless and beautiful. This performance is like a religious experience for me. There are so many amazing performers in music history and I would never deny that. But my God. I have never seen or heard the level of passion Michael brings. He makes everyone else boring for me. I don't even know how to come back from him. And to think you haven't seen the Bad tour yet.... oh you have such an amazing ride ahead! 😍

I feel bit weird about 'You Are Not Alone'. It's a nice song and Mike sings it well, but it was written by R Kelly whom, unlike Mike who was fully exonerated (despite what media likes folk to believe), actually did get proven guilty of sick crimes. So it tends to be the one MJ song I tend to avoid (being an abuse survivor myself). But it's up to Seph of course. I suppose at least worth listening to once, I guess, if not added to a regular playlist. At least it ain't R Kelly's voice you hear.

@@carn9507I mean I understand but at the end of the day, Michael agreed and chose to sing it because he meant and was still a message he wanted to spread to the world I guess? Just like Man In The Mirror which wasn't written by him either, (and Michael changed a few of the lyrics if I remember correctly), so I don't know if that necessarily matters? Because as far as I know at least, there isn't an R Kelly version of this song anywhere anyway so it's technically still Michael's song, he is the one singing it, and I don't think about R Kelly when I listen to it, more about the message and his death when I focus on the lyrics 😭 don't know if anything I said actually makes sense tho lmaooo

Seph, aside from the unbelievable performance from MJ. You mentioned his feet when dancing. Nobody will ever touch MJ in terms of overall package he had everything an artist needed and everything was uniquely him he truly is The Greatest Music Artist To Ever Live Singer & Dancer As Well Long Live The King Of Music he’ll always be my inspiration😇🙌🏽👑💙💕🌟(Siedah Garrett wrote this song only for MJ and she was begging Quincy to give it to MJ plus he wrote to Man In The Mirror but got his writing credits took off simply to let Ms. Garrett get most of the shine on that end of the bargain and MJ was always in his Prime on top of his game throughout his entire career and in all his performances he gave it his absolute all that is a FACT! And speaking on the BAD album not receiving no awards that night in 1988 that was absolutely the establishment’s “SCREW YOU!” Moment to MJ folks think they started to go against MJ in the 90’s No it started exactly during the BAD Era MJ wanted to Top his Thriller album and sweep the Grammys once again and they weren’t going for it so MJ was nominated for everything but didn’t win anything not even album of the year U2 won it and it’s crazy and yes it was done on purpose cause MJ with the BAD album had 5 consecutive Number 1 Hits in a row which is no easy feat to accomplish yet they gave him 0 awards that night so MJ put on the performance of a lifetime and now nobody remembers anything but MJ’ Performance of that Grammy Night and it is known as Thee Greatest Grammy Performance Of All Time! And you wanna know what’s real messed up he did eventually end up winning a Grammy for his BAD album only a year later in 1989 for Best Short Film with his Short Film/Music Video for his song titled “Leave Me Alone” which is phenomenal of a Short Film they were playing with MJ and sabotaged him out of his BAD albums success but the album is 1000% Forever Influential no denying that especially more than any album that won that night PERIOD!)

I don't think that I have seen these performances, thanks for this reaction. Btw, MJ's brother Jermaine claimed that the songs...1. The Way you Make Me Feel, 2. Keep it in the Closet 3. Do you Remember the Times and 4. 'Just Good Friends' were written about Diana Ross. I would add 'Dirty Diana' to the list from the 'Bad' album. Since Diana Ross was around 13 years older than MJ, a relationship between them would have been taboo back then, so they had to 'Keep it in the Closet 😊. Michael even lashed out in this song...The Way you make me feel'... with the lyrics... 'Aint nobody's business but mine and my baby'.

It just shows how much he put into his performance, he always gave his all 100% ❤❤ I think the lip sync not only because of the things you mentioned but also because he really wanted to focus more on his dancing, just like he did with Billie Jean in Motown 25, but the last bit he's definitely singing lve, there's no section in the MITM atudio version where the music stops completely and is basically just him and some other backing vocals, also there's way more adlibs that he adds that aren't on the studio verson 😄

15:50. The man in the dark glasses is Little Richard. Look up his bit from this same Grammys where he goes on a bit of a humorous rant about never winning a Grammy when presenting the award for Best New Artist, and the audience gave him a standing ovation. :P Also look up how that huge ATV catalogue that MJ bought (which included the Beatles songs) also included many of Little Richards songs under the Specialty label, which Little Richard himself never made much money from during that time (and sued Speciality) so Mike offered to give him back the rights to his songs for nothing.

In addition to the circle glide, in the Smooth Criminal short film you also missed the tap dance. Both the circle glide and the tap dance were introduced there, you'll see him doing them A LOT of times in the future performances (Michael had been tap dancing since he was a child but for some reason he didnt do it again until the Smooth Criminal short film). This is exactly the reason why you should also look a lot at what he does with his legs and feet and not just focus on his upper body, just like you said. It can be very distracting. Thats why he always wore white socks, it was to draw attention to his feet. He was a genius. So yeah, you should rewatch the Smooth Criminal short film again haha.

I was born in '87 so im aboit a year older rhan you lol Its often hard to tell when Michael is lipsyncing because he was so good at it. It was common in TV appearances when he was young, because alot of TV studios didn't have the right set up for a live performance, so he became an expert early on, and at this point in the 80's it was still pretty common for TV performances to be lipsynced. Pretty much every time he does it, hes singing full strength with his mic turned down. That bit where the vocal goes quiet is the volume its at while hes singing under a track. They switched to live mic after that. The intro to The Way You Make Me Feel may be live as well. Sometimes he did that arrangement live, sometimes he sang under a pre recorded track. The portions of the songs that are like the album version hes probably lypsyncing. I think there is only one time he wasnt actually singing under the track in a lipsync perfirmance, and that was his only performance of the song Remember the Time and the reason for it, was that he was injured (twisted ankle) and had to sit for the performance (on a throne) but i beliebe he sang a portion of the adlibs on that even.

(6:40) What's going on here is that Michael's mic was live in the stage monitors but was muted in the mains/front-of-house. The mics that are trained on the audience and the background vocalists are picking up Michael's vocals from the stage monitors (at a low volume) until Michael's mic is unmuted in the mains. And you are right, it's a hybrid lip-sync and live vocal performance. Yeah he was beaten by U2. Bad was for sure the album of the year, its not fair. Bad is Michael's second best selling album after Thriller and one of the best selling albums of all time. I also heard that for a time, Bad was the second best-selling album of all time and so Michael had (and still has) the best-selling album of all time (Thriller) and the second best-selling album of all time (Bad) at the same time. It's incredible

Yeah, unfortunately sometimes it's required for reasons (other than the artist being 'lazy') especially back then. Sometimes it's for a technical reason. Sometimes it's enforced by the venue (UK music show Top of the Pops often forced lip-sync, which annoyed certain bands, a couple of which even did some rather amusing performances in protest). Sometimes it's imposed because the venue or programme doesn't want to risk certain performers ad-libbing or changing words or throwing in controversial lyrics or messages or protests. At Motown 25 MJ performed fully live with his brothers doing the Jackson 5 songs but sang Billie Jean lip-synced because there were issues preventing him getting to sing it live. He still rocked the world with his performance though but yeah I wish it had been fully live but it is what it is and what it is is still iconic. :P And this performance is still iconic too and that last part of Man in the Mirror is certainly live. And full of passion. :D

@@joeldionisio Yeah. Oh, if you haven't seen it, go watch Nirvana's 1991 performance of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' on Top of the Pops where Nirvana were so against miming to a backing track that even when TotP allowed Kurt Cobain to sing to the instrumental, he and the rest of the band hating how the band would have to mime playing the instruments, so purposely sabotaged their own performance by making it blatantly obvious they weren't playing at all, not even trying to match the miming of the instruments to the music. And then Kurt starts singing and it's a low robotic drawl rather than his usual singing voice. And at some points puts the microphone IN his mouth. It's a beautiful F-You to the miming rules. :D For an extra MJ connection, Nirvana were supportive of him during the 1993 allegations and wore old-school young MJ shirts at some performances afterwards too.

@@ayaanbretmitchell9830 Mark there didn't say he hates MJ though. He said he's talented. I don't really know what Mark is getting at overall but he did still give some credit to MJ. I'm not so much into Elvis, and really don't like the double standards of the media between the two. Like Mike being accused of sick things, while Elvis certainly did see 14 yr old Priscilla and became infatuated with her. Or the fact media mocked MJ for having a pet chimp but seemed to ignore that Elvis too had a chimp. But I don't think there's a need for Elvis Vs MJ war on here, especially since it's Seph's channel and he clearly loves both artists.
