I believe the Bing/Bowie rendition is called "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy". It's become a holiday classic ever since Bing's Christmas Special on TV in 1977. Sadly, by the time this aired on November 30th, 1977, Bing had already passed away unexpectedly in October. The filming, which took place in London, England, was completed in September. A month later, Crosby, an avid golfer, completed 18 holes with World Cup champion Manuel Piñero. As they headed back to the Clubhouse, Bing said, "That was a great game of golf, fellas. Let’s go have a Coca-Cola." Those were his last words. He died instantly, on the golf course, of a heart attack. I like to think he was exactly where he wanted to be when it was his time to go.⛳

Thanks for sharing! That's my Uncle Edmond Hall playing clarinet and my Grandfather played with Fats Domino on the first Rock n Roll record to sell over a million copies. For many musicians in the early 20th century, being a musician was one of the ways out of the cotton and sugar cane fields. St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans and Chicago jazz/blues also developed as musicians like my Great Grandfather moved up the Mississippi on river boats to work. My Uncle moved to Ghana to open a music school for kids and then eventually retired in Boston and was inducted into the New England Jazz Hall of Fame. Bing Crosby was definitely a crooner. And an often untold story is how people such as him, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Danny Kaye and others helped paved the way for many black artists, refusing to play or tour in cities and casino's that supported segregation. They would sometimes have to sleep in different quarters. These artists would often promote on their own shows artists of color and move away from showing white musicians in film, but having black musicians play the parts.. The Civil Rights movement in general became supported by people of many nationalities and faiths. Good music is good music regardless of color! You'll find many of my Uncle Edmond Hall's instrumentals on KZbin with some amazing renditions like Dardenella. Dave Bartholomew, who was a writer and producer, also worte such classics as "My ding-a-ling," later covered by Chuck Berry. High Society was a movie in the 1950s which highlighted Newport Rhode Island and what woud become the Newport Jazz festival and the tastes of the "Well-to-do."

Many people nowadays don’t realize how Bing revolutionized popular singing. Prior to him it was common to sing opera style. Bing popularized singing in natural voice. Which everyone in popular music did ever since. He was very respected by jazz musicians as a true jazz singer, unlike many others from the era. He’s one of the all time OGs and GOATS. Louis is also one of the all time OGs and GOATS. He’s widely considered by musicians to be the greatest musician ever. He was known for musical magic, making you think you heard notes he hadn’t actually played, but only alluded to. He developed and popularized a style of simplicity, playing the least number of notes needed to convey the melody. Your brain fills in the rest. The opposite of bebop which came later. “Satchmo” means satchel mouth, referring to the baggy stretched out cheeks of a trumpet player. He’s so known for his singing now that people don’t realize what a great musician his was.
@reallymysterious45203 жыл бұрын
You mentioned Diversity - Bing was known to try to get Louis and other blacks into his movies - he didn't see color - he just saw sweet notes of music all colors of the rainbow ... Crosby admired Louis Armstrong for his musical ability, and the trumpet maestro was a formative influence on Crosby's singing style. When the two met, they became friends. In 1936, Crosby exercised an option in his Paramount contract to regularly star in an out-of-house film. Signing an agreement with Columbia for a single motion picture, Crosby wanted Armstrong to appear in a screen adaptation of that eventually became . Crosby asked Harry Cohn, but Cohn had no desire to pay for the flight or to meet Armstrong's "crude, mob-linked but devoted manager, Joe Glaser". Crosby threatened to leave the film and refused to discuss the matter. Cohn gave in; Armstrong's musical scenes and comic dialogue extended his influence to the silver screen, creating more opportunities for him and other African Americans to appear in future films. Crosby also ensured behind the scenes that Armstrong received equal billing with his white co-stars. Armstrong appreciated Crosby's progressive attitudes on race, and often expressed gratitude for the role in later years.

During the painful and long death of my mother from lung cancer, she relied on his song “It’s a Beautiful World” to grant her strength, joy, love and trust to constantly remind her of the value of her life in ours. I highly recommend the miniseries Soundbreaking about the history of recorded music from crooners to hip hop and beyond. Finally someone reacts to Bing Crosby - the artist who had sold more records - singles and albums combined - estimated to be close to a Billion units by some people. Read his entry in Wikipedia: Crosby influenced the development of the postwar recording industry. After seeing a demonstration of a German broadcast quality reel-to-reel tape recorder brought to America by John T. Mullin, he invested $50,000 in a California electronics company called Ampex to build copies. He then persuaded ABC to allow him to tape his shows. He became the first performer to prerecord his radio shows and master his commercial recordings onto magnetic tape. Through the medium of recording, he constructed his radio programs with the same directorial tools and craftsmanship (editing, retaking, rehearsal, time shifting) used in motion picture production, a practice that became an industry standard.[12] In addition to his work with early audio tape recording, he helped to finance the development of videotape, bought television stations, bred racehorses, and co-owned the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team, during which time the team won two World Series (1960 and 1971). Crosby admired Louis Armstrong for his musical ability, and the trumpet maestro was a formative influence on Crosby's singing style. When the two met, they became friends. In 1936, Crosby exercised an option in his Paramount contract to regularly star in an out-of-house film. Signing an agreement with Columbia for a single motion picture, Crosby wanted Armstrong to appear in a screen adaptation of The Peacock Feather that eventually became Pennies from Heaven.

Some of Bing Crosby’s biggest hits included “White Christmas”, “Swinging on a Star” and “Pennies from Heaven”. Satchmo, or Satch Mo’, was short for Satchel Mouth, because of his puffy cheeks. The story is that when he was a kid he’d dance in the street for pennies, which would be thrown to him. He’d scoop them up and put them in his mouth! Maybe… He was also widely known as “Pops”. High Society is a musical movie and also starred Sinatra. It’s full of great songs! Try “Well Did You Evah”. Louis Armstrong’s voice was special but another to check out is Louis Prima, another jazz singer and trumpeter and bandleader who is probably best known for singing as King Louis the Orangutan in Disney’s 1967 animated The Jungle Book.

I thought it was because he could fill his cheeks up so much when he played. Pennies sound unsanitary even around 1900 or so.

More specifically, "satchel mouth" referred to how wide he could open his mouth, like an old-fashioned satchel or doctor's bag where the top splits apart when it opens. And yes, OMG, Louis Prima. His song in Jungle Book is "I wanna be like you" and it is fantastic.
