This was the exact video I was thinking about as I just learned about biochar yesterday and found it it's really just charcoal before you inoculate it. I am an avid brisket smoker and for whatever crazy reason I want to self supply every part of my meal from raising the cow, making the charcoal, growing veggies for sides, etc.

I appreciate the time and effort you spent to gather the data (looks like it took a while😅) and to share that information for us that are eternally curious. After Hurricane Idalia, I have an almost limitless supply of both hard and softwoods and have been considering making charcoal but for the life of me can’t figure out what I need with 50 gallons of charcoal.. Cheers!

Thank you for doing this. My question is, will the lump charcoal purchased at the store be good in the garden? I am a apartment dweller and I only have a patio to plant my garden on. I don’t have access to any fire pits and I can’t use open flame anywhere near my apartment building so I cannot make my own and, it seems rather expensive. I’m looking for alternatives.

Lump charcoal is not supposed to have any additives and some have suggested it could be an alternative to creating biochar. I'm not completely convinced this is a good idea one because of cost but mostly because I am not certain how commercially produced char is made and if anything is included as an additive. If the lump char was created only by pyrolysis then yes it would be ok to use. I hope this helps and good luck on your garden:)

I have almond and blue oak, a barrel, and soon a burn pile. I will try to make some myself using a sealed but vented barrel heated externally on top of the burn pile. When I want to smoke meat, I find adding wet chips as needed gives me the best control of the result.

thanks for the video, I know you spent a good deal of time/effort making it. If I do a burn for cooking charcoal in my retort, I try to stop the burn before completion. this give me charcoal that still has wood characteristics, more smoke and flavor for cooking Boston butts. I have also seen biochar wood used for fuel in a forge and making water filters. thanks again

Right on thanks. It was a tedious video but totally worth making to document the findings. Totally would make some good Boston butt using homemade char with some oak left in for smoke. Kudos to you and thanks for watching and your feedback.

Any ash I generate goes into my burn pile area which eventually gets transferred to another fill area on my property.

Of the few videos watched on your channel, I'm liking your content. I recently came into a large commercial 'Burn Off Oven' which is close to its initial shakedown. I'd be happy to exchange biochar ideas and potential uses if you're so inclined...

Very interesting. A 15 pound bag of lump charcoal at Walmart is $12. You take it home and use it. Making your own is very time consuming.

Both are made from the process of pyrolysis. Charcoal if left untreated can be used as Biochar but charcoal is typically used for cooking or heating. Biochar has many uses but is commonly used as a soil amendment.

All that ash! You can spread all the ash from BQs or fireplaces on the garden or field or farm. It contains potassium.
@therealprtrhsenteal
@therealprtrhsenteal 7 ай бұрын
This can be oa good idea but also may not depending on your soil p.h. Using wood ash can be useful in soil that is acidic but can have a negative affect in soil is neutral to alkaline. Wood ash has many micro and macronutrients with calcium being the most prevalent followed by potassium. It is a good recommendation to have your soil tested before using as a soil amendment or if you are going to use it do so sparingly.
