I’ve always seen this as vessel’s mother talking to him. Mostly because of the mother figure in the artwork. Also if you go back to the lyrics in dark signs, he says “where I was raised, there was no streetlights” then in this song the lyrics are “I raised you in the dark”

Lost my only son to depression and alcoholism when he was 31, yesterday was the 8th anniversary of my finding him in the floor in my living room and it was a hard day for me yesterday. How can he have been gone 8 years already? This song just crushes me, especially the lines I want to help you but I don't know how and I cannot fix your wounds this time.

I am so sorry for your loss. November will be 13 years for me since finding my daughter, and yes, some days it feels like yesterday and other days, a lifetime. No rhyme or reason to any of it. The song hurts, but also weirdly helps. We are not alone.

My daughter struggled with self harm for the past 6 years. She hid it well at first, but the older she got the less she cared if it showed or not. That was a wake up call. We found a really good child psychologist and therapist that worked together with sessions and medication to help her. She fought it for a long time, but the councilor was accustomed to teens like her and could relate to her. There really is a difference when you find someone who can understand your child when you don't. He wouldn't tell me what they talked about, just what to watch for and how to reach her better. She graduated HS last year and took a gap year before starting college this fall. She got her own apartment in June and worked a couple jobs to pay her bills. Things started looking up and I was so glad. As far as I know she hasn't self harmed in a while, her scars are fading and are not fresh looking anymore. I'm concerned about her at the moment though, one of her classmates had a baby girl in their senior year. Last year the friend tried to kill herself via car accident, really messed her up. Took a long time to heal physically. But unfortunately she never felt better emotionally because she OD'd last week and they found her dead in Walmart parking lot. She left her baby with her mom. So sad. My daughter cried and came over when she told me about her friend. I was glad she turned to me for comfort cuz she hasn't done that since she was maybe 12. My daughter is 19, almost 20, but she just sobbed about her friend and Kept saying "she was only 18"😭😔. Completely devastated. Just always be there for them and if necessary find a child psychologist that understands kids of this generation better than we do. It really helped us. I wish you the same success. ❤️💙🩷💚

This song breaks me every time. The first time though, I balled. I really think with Vessel's lyrical history of self-harm this is from the perspective of his mother written in 80's hairband power ballad style like maybe his mother would like.

This is the official art for this song. And I never noticed that detail in this illustration until you pointed it out today. And my jaw hit the fucking floor. There is the loss or absence of a child. Whether it was an accident, a miscarriage, premature birth, infertility, or a stillborn. It doesn't matter. A life that was so precious was lost in some way and it shattered them both. 🥺 I'm devastated all over again.

This song both hits home hard and also breaks my heart for them. It hasn't been but maybe a couple of weeks since I got my affairs in order with the intent of just ending everything, but my delusion that no one can protect kiddo like I can outweighed the mental/emotional exhaustion and I'll be around at least long enough for kiddo to grow up and build a life of his own. To think about others feeling what I feel breaks my heart, I wish I could take the pain and let everyone just feel at least content.

I've heard from a few people that this song is from Vessel's mother's perspective and she's singing about him waking her up. I feel like having wondered from the path and drifting through the silence of the hillside possibly means that he got off the "life" path he was on and was mentally unreachable, suffering in silence alone. Not allowing anyone to see he was hurting until it was almost too late. As for cutting deeper than the scars could run, I feel like he's saying that he's ready to let go, that his pain was deeper than "skin deep". As a mother to a daughter who struggled with self harm, when I hear this song, I can see why people say it's Vessel's mother's perspective. It's exactly what I felt when my daughter would cut herself. It was hard to know she was hurting emotionally and there was nothing I could do about it. Thankfully she's better now, she's finally stopped self harming. But I really can see this song in the perspective of a mother. A mother "raises" her children, so yeah. Not sure how else to take it. BTW, was going to tell you, you need to listen to Take Me Back to Eden again. There are some callbacks in it you don't want to miss. Good stuff..... Yeah, when I heard this song I thought it felt like an 80s-90s power ballad. Totally loved it! It's still one of my favorite songs of Sleep Token. It just touches too close to home and I can't help but play it on repeat sometimes. As always, thanks for the reaction and review. I enjoy your videos and it's nice to try to see what other theories people have. ❤ Worship ❤

Having 2 partners that are prone to depression and self harm, this is a hard song to listen to. Getting a video message from my long distance partner struggling to keep it together, showing me how she hurt herself and this song playing in the background will forever be burned in my brain. The line “please don’t hurt yourself again” makes me cry every time. Because it’s exactly what I said to her. But she’s fine now. We got through a very dark period for her together. And this band has been a major part of it.

This song give me huge Pearl Jam vibes. Maybe a lil Breaking Benjamin in there. Upon first listen I thought this song was about self harm/suicide, but heard the miscarriage theory and have since changed my view. I had a good friend unalive themselves late last year and this song was on repeat for a little while. It hurt, but was weirdly cathartic knowing I wasn’t alone in feeling helpless in not knowing how to help them. I bawled like a baby the first time I heard the lyrics “Are you really ok?” because even though I thought I’d dealt with it, I had obviously not. I think this song helped me process her loss. Some people also think this song is from Vessel’s Mother’s perspective after an attempt to take his own life. It’s amazing to me how differently people are able to interpret art, whatever form that make take. Worship

Ngl, I usually skip this one when listening to TMBTE unless I’m in a Mood where I can handle it. I lost a friend to suicide just under 16 years ago now, and whenever I hear it it brings that pain back to the surface. It also reminds me that I will never truly be okay with what happened, and I think the title can apply to the person whose perspective the song is from as well-after dealing with all of that, are YOU really okay? Because watching someone you love suffer like that and knowing you can’t help them is a special kind of heartbreak. The person in the song who hurt themself is not okay. The person who wants to help them but doesn’t know how is not okay. And none of us are okay after hearing this song.

Honestly if you didn't do these reactions, there would be so much that I would've missed. I never took a closer look at the song art and now this song and High Water makes so much sense. Probably makes the line "built from future daughters" from Atlantic make sense in retrospect.

Honestly, and I don't mean this in a disrespectful way to anyone following this band at all, but I really feel that this "relationship" with the Sleep deity which is being woven all through their narrative has gotten a bit out of hand. The vast majority of it has been extrapolated quite extensively by the fanbase (which they are fully welcome to do) but it does dilute the message behind the music a bit when you try to find it where it doesn't exist. The only official "canon" lore that exists is from one singular (short) interview that Vessel did way back when. He refers to Sleep exclusively as "Him" (so not a female lover type trope). He also says "Our verses are a token, crafted to magnify and embody the multitude of emotion that writhes in our subconscious. Sonically our voice is rooted in the resonation between the notes and your emotion." So we really should be focusing more on the emotion and intent behind the music than the thinly veiled "lore" which surrounds them. On which topic, I think thematically there is a whole lot more reference to a childhood trauma and parental difficulties than there are references to lovers or partners. It goes without saying that there's obviously some romantic upheaval that happened, and he does write about that in some songs but there's plenty of interpretations that point to something a lot earlier and a lot more primal than just a simple love story. [LORE BREAKING SPOILERS] To read further beyond that, the material of his previous work follows very similar stylistic content to at least One and Two from Sleep Token, and even Sundowning makes direct lyrical callbacks - and I think they are far more in reference to a traumatic upbringing. I draw significant comparisons to the song Patient to something like Atlantic from TPWBYT. Weeper and Graves are hauntingly sad too - much more childhood trauma related IMO.
