In this video, I react for the first time to the British band Sleep Token's song “Are You Really Okay?”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate Vessel's vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. This is an amazing tune and I am so glad I finally reacted to it!
Original video: • Are You Really Okay?

Hello, gorgeous! I'm Lolli, your Fairy Voice Mother. I am a voice teacher & vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing all the time in styles such as pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Hindustani, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practicing new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. It's my favourite thing in the whole world, and because I love you, I want you to sing too. I believe everyone can sing, and my mission with this channel is to break down techniques that are so often portrayed as something to be exclusively accessed by people with a special talent. Well. Special talents can be learnt, and I am here to teach them to you.

Pleaaaaaaase. There are so many "vocal coach reacts" type channels that do absolutely no commentary on vocal technique or music theory or anything. She is my favorite person to watch react to Sleep Token because i feel like I learn so much each time and she highlights things I've never even noticed despite listening to their entire catalogue nonstop for years.

In the past ten years, I've lost my remaining grandparents, my parents, uncles, my father-in-law and a childhood friend. My husband survived an aneurysm but it left him disabled. All the while putting on a brave face and not really properly grieving. The first i heard this song I just fell apart. It was like someone asking me but are you REALLY ok? No, I'm not, but I will be. I still tear up. It's beautiful, but it's a tough one.

This never gets easier to listen to 😢 musically it’s so incredibly uplifting and bright considering how dark and deep the lyrical content is. The opening guitar riff is SO clean and sunny. It’s a musical paradox. And yes those drums 🤤 so crisp and deliberate and also soft and soothing at the same time. The degree of empathy and helplessness displayed by Vessel is heart wrenching.

You know a song hits deep when you have to pull the car over and bawl the first time you hear it. His voice is so raw and plaintive...hits a primitive part of my brain. People have called this a "power ballad" but to me it's the anguish of a parent's inability to help their child.

This song breaks me. Every. Single. Time. What I love about it, and what hits so hard, is that he doesn’t use any flowery or metaphorical language to paint a picture. He’s just stating the hurt and the sorrow, simply and lovingly. And that’s so … ‘beautiful’ isn’t even a good enough word. I heard it when I was going through a super rough time, and it was like one part of myself begging the other part not to give up. This guy has been through some shit. And if he hasn’t, then his level of insight is … otherworldly.

When you were talking about that Celine Dion tone, I thought the same initially but I tried to emmulate Vessel's technique on this song, only in my tone, but to make that sound, on that specific run where you stopped for example, it's more in a yawn position, or at least that's what it feels like to me. Anyway, amazing video, your content helped me a lot with different aspects of my voice 🙌 Thanks a lot!

This follows Ascensionism, a song that talks about ‘eternal ascension’, leaving this earth to escape the pain. I think this song is Vessel asking himself that question, pleading with himself. Until you’ve been there…… it seems unthinkable. The darkness is haunting…… Somehow, Sleep Token have saved my soul. I don’t know how, I don’t know why. So thankful to have seen them twice in Sydney recently. Lucky to have discovered them. Thankful for the world I live in.

My favorite interpretation of this song is that it's from the perspective of his mother to Vessel. You can see in the cover art of this song that it appears to be a mother holding her child. The lyrics may suggest this, too. "I raised you in the dark..." and "I could see it in you even then, " meaning that she didn't know what was happening, but she knew something was wrong. She didn't get confirmation that something was wrong until the implied self-harm in the fourth stanza.

I am a fan of sleep token the moment I heard chokehold but what sealed the deal for me was this track. Its a very well written song and i know heavy metal fans generally dont like sleep token because of their stark contrast of music genre, you cant deny the vocals and lyrics. missing limbs is another track from previous album that follows the same pattern as this track and is amazing.

The more I listen to this the more I'm convinced it sounds like Vessel is singing about how his partner went through a miscarriage, particularly with the lines around 7:45 - 8:30 The true meaning or story doesn't particularly matter, because it creates such strong feelings regardless of your interpretation. Absolutely beautiful song.

I agree especially as the character for the song appears to be a woman who is holding a container which seems to have a baby inside it. The woman also appears to be bleeding from her wrists so I believe she began self harming as she couldn’t come to terms with the loss.

I don't think this song is about loving someone you can't help but is instead the Goddess Sleep manipulating Vessel into falling for her again. It comes directly after ascensionism where vessel takes back control in the relationship, becoming an equal partner rather than a doting simp. The first verse, "I raised you in the dark caught you reading by the sunrise, you wandered from the path through the silence of the hillside", is when sleep meets vessel for the first time and in those early days she hid her abusive nature from him reflecting in the last line of the verse " and don't you know, I was trying to hold back the darkness". The "dripping crimson on the carpet" line is a reference back to Atlantic where he alludes to a failed suicide attempt. Looking at the song through those eyes it is easy to see why he chose that darker style to his vocals to contradict the softer more emotional tone of the music. He knows its lies to get him to fall for her again and judging by the next songs bitterness towards sleep it really didn't work!
