The irony of it all is Gil still could have easily won if he used Ea...but he was too proud to pull the weapon on what he considered an opponent who was beneath him. Gil wasn't beaten by Shirou...he was beaten by his own pride.

Nah, as soon as he was in UBW it was over pulling EA would have had the same result. Obviously he could have turned Shirou into a pincushion if he had used better weapons when he saw shirou trying to use UBW to break rho aias, but he got blitzed by swords in UBW.

Gil lost due to 2 things: 1. Underestimating Shirou until the very end. 2. He just fires the weapons, he doesn't really use them, so even if in a real fight the fake sword would loose, by just clashing into each other they cancel out.

Watching Gilgamesh vs Shirou for the first time is like watching your friend finally stand up to his bully. Shit was so beautifully written and so epic at the same time. Nasu is some s-tier writer dawg

In the visual novel Gilgamesh actually wanted to have that hand to hand sword fight with Shirou because seeing that he was a boy and not a servant he thought he could humiliate him (Gil isn't as bad as the anime portrayed him to be in close combat) but unfortunately for Gil, he didn't realize that at this point, during their fight Shirou had become Archer's equal in hand to hand combat so he was pretty much dueling Archer's equivalent in a child's body. This really was the first time in Fate that we got to see Gilgamesh dragged into an unfair fight where from the moment he was forced into the reality marble, his chances of victory dropped to 0%. It was truly satisfying to watch. Gilgamesh is still the strongest servant in all the main Fate series (Minus FGO) but he got what he deserved here

Definitely wouldn't call it a 0% chance for Gil even in UBW. He has a lot of tools that Shirou has no counter for or can't reproduce, including Ea. He just didn't want to lower himself to that, and he paid for his ego with an unlikely loss.

If Gilgamesh had taken Shirou seriously from the beginning using Ea and the chains of heavan he would've killed Shirou in a short period of time, but Shirou exposed his one weakness, his unmatched arrogance that didn't allow him to take it truly seriously until it was too late and Shirou cut his arm off sealing Gilgamesh's defeat. Also it didn't help that Unlimited Blade Works is literally the one noble phantasm that is the perfect counter to Gate of Babylon as it was able to close his gates at such a speed that the only blades that make it through are a manageable amount. The moment Shirou dragged him into that reality marble, paired with Gil's inability to check his pride away, it was literally checkmate. Hence why Gilgamesh attempted to assassinate Archer since he sensed the threat. Some fans considered Gil's loss to Shirou as humiliating, but it really wasn't. Shirou was his perfect counter, and there was no servant in that or the previous holy grail war who could single handedly defeat him.

Gilgamesh is HEAVILY overestimated, at least before CCC, any servant could beat another in the right circumstance. It was one of the cool things about fate that a lesser known hero could beat a popular one by playing their cards right.

Not really, cause outside of some fate games there are still no servants that can straight up fight against gilgamesh in a neutral situation and even come close to winning except for enkidu, and if he does fight everyone like he fights enkidu any servant aside from enkidu would get washed instantly I wouldn't call a servant overestimated if they get beaten in a niche situation

@@Nanii_nani Bro, Saber killed him pretty fast (not easily) once she got her NP, Cu stalled him for a long time, he fought dirty against Heracles, I think his only easy fight was Caster and that was a sneak attack. Early Fate was truly close between servants, it was the spin offs that made the servants too OP. And now he's not even close to the strongest servants with all the BS FGO has made.

@@AimaZero saber did not kill him fast, she almost got murdered in her first fight without avalon, which normally she give it to her masters, dont know why she doesnt have this in fgo though, cu is pretty much immune to projectiles thats why he was able to stall gilgamesh for almost a day, alcides is a stronger heracles and gilgamesh was toying with him in strange fake even when alcides had jacks np, even if it was a backstab medea flat out stated that she cant beat gilgamesh or are you saying otherwise that medea can beat gilgamesh in a straight fight, i agree that he is falling off really fast when it comes to fgo but aside from that he isnt overestimated in other spin offs since none of those fgo characters made it into other platforms

@@Nanii_nani The thing I'm talking about though, is that in the original VN Gilgamesh is a big threat but never actually impossible (as he loses every route) The spin offs of the series have skyrocketed the scaling of the series, but Gilgamesh is overestimated in regards to the power he really has. That first encounter, Saber had no mana, and Gil appeared in full armor, that's a very unfair comparison when in the 4th war it was said they were the last 2 left, so they should be in around the same strength not counting Ea or Avalon. And Saber did kill him fast, it was only 3 exchanges and Avalon is her NP, the same as Ea is Gil's.

If they fought again Saber would destroy him. - The first Rho Aias that protects Shirou during his chanting was from Archer, Shirou copied it after seeing it that time. - Shirou was able to knock down every weapon Gil used by throwing it's copy, even if the anime shows him jumping and deflecting, it still shows how he picks up new swords everytime - Gil didn' t use any weapons that Shirou couldn't copy because he looked down on him and wanted to prove a point

The Rho Aias Shirou uses was his own, it was already stored in UBW. It's entirely possible Gilgamesh didn't know the limitations on UBW and what it can copy.

@morkmello5367 Yeah In the Visual Novel Shirou rushed Gil in melee to block the usage of Ea, while UBW-Swordspam had GOB-weaponspam in check. That was the whole idea. When Gil acepted things for what they where and tried to grab Ea, he got his arm cut off immediately. For GIl using Ea against the filthy human Faker was equal to a loss. He still took that loss at the end, even before actually losing his arm and the battle, when he recognized he needed his Reality Marble busting Sword to deal with the Faker. Gil just "throwing away his pride" would be against his very nature.

Ea is one thing for its activation time but he didn't even try to use Enkidu or the two giant divine constructs; or for that matter, other unknown divine constructs he might possess. Shirou can't copy those so he definitely lost partly because of his attitude. To begin with, that's why he let Shirou use UBW and that's why he lost the moment he entered the Reality Marble. So not wrong nor right I guess

Each story i know the writer had the 3 possible ending in place and throw dice to figure what ending the would show. The mostly try to avoid the bad ending for the end, yes there a bad ending possibility not the multiple one, There a good ending and a correct ending. The ending we see is the Good, but there a other ending call the correct ending, were Rin run to Saber and make a new pact with her and keep Saber around for the next time around. Because yes the destroy the grail now, but the next one will come shorter because there was no real grail to win it was corrupted. And so making a new pact with saber secure her for the next war that will come years in advance.

Gilgamesh is a braggart and not a good warrior, that is demonstrated by Shiro in UBW and UC. Gilgamesh has no chance against Archer. Ea can't defeat UBW, UBW is designed to nullify Gilgamesh.

@@fearmaiden.21 EA destroys reality marbles when it is deployed and EA can't be copied in anyway by Shirou or UBW. This is why Shirou cuts off Gilgamesh's hand to stop him from using it. Shirou also acknowledges that letting Gilgamesh regain his composure will result in Gilgamesh winning which is why he locks him in melee and doesn't let him retreat.
