Serbu's own coverage brought out the technical details but I can't bother to look it back myself. And yes, there are design choices that can significantly reduce if not completely remove the danger of shrapnel being directed toward the user, but mainly the key is in the bolt's design, and that gun's entire point is being the most powerful pipe gun and the must accessible .50cal, it couldn't be anything other than a screw-in cap which is, clearly, far less safe in such case.

So, new to the community, but I've followed this situation from the beginning. Mark Serbu did calculations and after everything was finished, he estimated the amount of force that Scott says was inaccurate, and that it was between 235,000, and 275,000 psi. He also came to the conclusion that the round was loaded with pistol powder. Those who know firearms and ammo reloading are probably cringing there. For those who don't know, the powder used in pistol caliber rounds burn hotter and expel significantly more force than the standard powder used in rifle ammunition. It's a terrible mishap and he for sure has some higher power watching over him.

Explosive compounds can age to become more inert or more volatile. It’s virtually impossible to tell which just by looking at an external container like a casing. This was very possibly a genuine un-tampered round that was simply old. No user error, simply an aged round that grew more volatile/hot with similar chemistry to pistol powder. Pistol rounds are smaller and can handle more volatile chemistry because less powder fits into the casing. But in a lager round… big boom

So, its still on the fense about Mike and his toilet canon, however, There are 2 accepted theories about the ammo. Both are equally likely and legit the only 2 options for why they failed. First option is pretty simple, They were counterfeit, the ammo is basically a 50 caliber anti-armor tungsten drill bit that fits in the gun from the early to mid 90's. They loved the power and the effects BUT it would stip a very expensive barrel in a like 100-200 shots so the USMC got rid of them. However collectors are collectors and at $100-160 a round you can take a $5 bit of brass, clean it up and slap a 15 cent Chinese shaved drill bit into it, add some grains of powder and call it good. You sell it to some dude who sells it to some dude who sells it to some dude and where it comes from is erased and no one knows if its legit or not. The other theory is, the USMC dumped a LOT of tained ammo into the asian and mid east market to mess with local suppliers and destabilize the moral of arms buys in the area. They take a good round, swap out the powder with C4, or some cheap high explosive and call it a day. For smaller ammo like an AK or even standard nato rounds, it pops, blows up the gun, maybe ruins some dudes day. However, a 50 caliber is basically a stuck of dynamite with predicted results. In something bigger a tainted round will just wreck house on a belt fed and remove some armor off the battlefield.... However in a Serbu... Well... Yeah
@dramspringfealdКүн бұрын
As for the other problem, Mike Serbu stole a kids toy out of the Cookbook. The Serbu 50 is basically a chopped off anti-aircraft canon bolted to a pipe bomb and used to be sold in a diy kit. Mike bought it, streamlined it and sells them for like $4000-6000 a piece and never actually safety tested it like you are supposed to... And well, this is exactly what happens. People give the barret a lot of crap cause it's heavy, but most of the housing is designed to, in the event of well, that, it would absorb most of the blast, push it away from the user and, I mean, you'll probably break your hand and get some burns, it beats well... Scott.

I know a lot of people make fun of Americans for all the stuff that they do that gets them hurt, or worse, but honestly, I can't fault them for doing what they love. I know I'm not living as perfectly healthy as I should be, so what gives me the right to judge? Accidents happen.

Accidents with guns are incredibly rare as long as all basic safety rules are followed. In this case, it wasn't even that. It was just an old bullet that had been reloaded by either a total dingus, or worse someone who KNEW they were severely overpressuring a round and turning some future stranger's gun into a grenade.

25:41 I feel strange. Watched like 7 others react to this, and first time I've cried along... why this time?

I wonder if anyone has figured out how fast the cap was travelling when it hit Scott's eye protection... I'm so curious what the fps on that was, even a rough estimate would scratch the itch in my brain lol
@ninamercer6807Ай бұрын
So... the round exploded at around 200,000 PSI. That is around 4 times the normal pressure. The bullet, iirc, didn't go all the way down the barrel, and got stuck somewhere. Or it just destroyed the barrel. On average, a .50 BMG round travels at 2850 feet per second. 4 times that is 11400 fps. It would probably be a little slower than that, but even then that's an insane amount of energy.
@andybrown1002Ай бұрын
@ninamercer6807 see that's what I was thinking, also it wasnt a normal 50bmg but was a slap round which travels closer to 4k fps... So in reality that cap was going about 16k fps? Thank God it doesn't look like there was a full foot of travel so it hadn't really had time to accelerate just yet

Not all intubation is down the throat. 95% of it is. But for trauma cases where the neck is involved, you go somewhere else to not play with the surgical area. Everyone just calls it a chest tube, but it can do a lot of shit. Intercostal intubation is the term.
