Arkhipov was not the only Soviet officer that saved the world. On 26.09.1983, Stanislav Petrov was not supposed to be on duty that day, but another officer got sick, so he got called in. Sometime during his shift launch detection system alerted stuff of five launches taking place on US soil. However Stanislav stayed calm and took decision to ignore the alarm. His reasoning being "why only five rockets? If US started the attack, they would've tried to destroy all USSR defences, therefore launching full scale attack would be more obvious choice, and why all the indications are coming from just one source?". He turned out to by correct. A sensor on one of the spy satellites malfunctioned and mistook some natural phenomenon for missile launch. Only Petrov's cold blooded decision kept two superpowers from destroying the world that day

Don’t forget *Stanislav Petrov* He worked for the Oko nuclear early warning system. On the 26th of September, 1983, the system reported that a US nuclear missile had been launched, which was followed up by five more missiles. Petrov followed his gut and decided not to report this. Turn out that a Soviet satellite misinterpreted the suns light reflecting off of clouds to be US missiles. He was praised at first by higher ranking officers but despite the fact that he saved the world from nuclear war, he was fired for disobeying protocols. He received no reward. He died in May 2017 *Stanislav Petrov will not be forgotten*

Yea, probably the best approach would have been, to report a "Potential" threat, that could be further analyzed. Jumping to conclusions without further analysis in general, and especially when the stakes are really, Really High is the worst thing a human being can make. Pushing the "Button" at the first warning is a panicky, brainless reaction. The other extreme to completely ignore the warning in a high risk situation. That`s why he was fired from the army, because in an army you cannot permit units who don`t follow strict orders, even if he saved half of mankind on that day. Thanks Petrov, for not panicking, Cheers!

A war between the US and USSR would've ended up with defending Europe and the western coastline until the soviets began eating themselves, the USSR had a lot of military might but the US had equal or greater military might and a thriving economy whereas the USSR was mere steps from starvation at all points, Russia still hasn't recovered.
@PremierCCGuyMMXVI4 жыл бұрын
D U true, in a conventional war, the USA could have definitely destroyed, eventually, the USSR. Probably been like WW2. The enemy gains all the ground and than is pushed back. In July 1961, Arkhipov was appointed deputy commander and therefore executive officer of the new Hotel-class ballistic missile submarine K-19.After a few days of conducting exercises off the south-east coast of Greenland, the submarine developed an extreme leak in its reactor coolant system. This leak led to failure of the cooling system. Radio communications were also affected, and the crew was unable to make contact with Moscow. With no backup systems, Captain Nikolai Zateyev ordered the seven members of the engineer crew to come up with a solution to avoid nuclear meltdown. This required the men to work in high radiation levels for extended periods. They eventually came up with a secondary coolant system and were able to prevent a reactor meltdown. Although they were able to save themselves from a nuclear meltdown, the entire crew, including Arkhipov, were irradiated. All members of the engineer crew and their divisional officer died within a month due to the high levels of radiation they were exposed to. Over the course of two years, 15 more sailors died from the after-effects. (Wikipedia) This accident helped him insist to his decision to not agree with the nuclear launch in 1962.

Vasily Arkhapov, a lad who understood the dangers and consequences of nuclear fallout, radiation and how they can effect humans. As XO aboard K-19 (Hiroshima//the Widowmaker) he was responsible for preventing a nuclear meltdown on the subs reactor, leading to the deaths of the reactor crew a month later. I’m not sure he understood this, but it seems he, unlike many, realized that nuclear bombs don’t kill their victims instantly…it’s an agonizing, retched death that no human deserves to suffer, not even your worst enemy.

I doubt my comment will be noticed. But I wanted to say that my grandpa was on the destroyer (USS Cony DDE 508) that dropped the dummy depth charges on B-59 submarine. I always read about them being "depth charges", but my grandpa said they were actually hand grenades stuffed inside of toilet paper rolls -- which dissolved and detonated after being wet for so long. The Destroyers guns were aimed at the submarine, but the captain yelled at the crew not to shoot. They gave food, water, supplies to the Russians aboard the submarine. I was able to get the bronze plaque from the USS Cony, which is unique to each navy ship. It was displayed on the bridge of the ship back then, but I gave it to my grandpa.
