The justification for annexation of areas of countries that have larger ethnic Russian populations has a problem. Just because you have Russian genes and can speak the Russian language doesn't mean you want to be ruled by a Russian dictator, much less, possibly be conscripted into the Russian army to support an autocrat's egotistical expansion of his subjugated territory. I would imagine many ethnic Russian wish to stay citizens within their respective states, and be able to take part in local politics and administration in a way that's good for themselves and their local society. There will always be ethnic sociopaths and psychopaths that have decided that they could take a higher place in a the expanding foreign territory hierarchy, and so accept foreign king-making support for the sake of that position. They will have a loud voice and lots of support, but ultimately are advocating subordinating to Putin's autocracy, and giving up everyone's rights to self-determination for that rung on that ladder. I can't imagine normal everyday people who are willing to work, be part of the community, and who believe in hierarchy based on relative competence, would ever want to rejoin mother Russia under Putin's regime. I am sure the whole of all of Russia and it's old USSR territories would love to freely associate with and openly collaborate with Russia and each other wearing their own native nationality or one rooted in Russian ethnicity, where borders safe and strict, and Russia is ruled in a proper democracy by the people for the people. We all understand that Russia calling itself as democracy is because a democracy is seen as a virtuous system and the European counties that have it have been efficiently productive with populations that are well-integrated in their own territories. The political minority know that the majority have chosen a leader and a direction for the country to be lead so they fall into line. Calling anything but a true democracy a democracy is just trying to use the 'term' to white wash the administration and actually highlights the good quality of politics and administration in real democracies.

You cant compare russian military spending with EU NATO in $. One 155mm NATO Artillery Shell costs between 4.000-8.000$ and one russian 152mm Shell costs 400-600 $. So if they spend the same amount, in military equipment russia gets much much more out of it.

We have an equal sized military base run by the USA but called a RAF base in the middle of Yorkshire England. It has a stars and stripes flag the size of tennis court flying over it, and it's not really a secret. It is festooned in security cameras.
