The word "expanded" almost suggests that NATO moves to occupy ground closer and closer to the borders of other countries, which is a framing right out of Russian propaganda. When we talk about Russia expanding, this is the case, both historically and in the present day. Remember that countries near Russia are ELECTING to JOIN NATO because of the very real and serious threat of Russian military aggression. Russia is that crazy guy in the neighborhood with a history of assault who is constantly claiming his property extends onto yours and does so while brandishing a gun and screaming wildly about how everyone is out to get him. No, everyone is just scared shitless that you are going to kill someone and so grouping up against a common threat makes the most sense for everyone who isn't Russia.

If Russian and more specifically Putin was an honest actor and truly acted in a peaceful, democratic manner, then I could see how Russia would be extremely upset given NATO’s pretty large expansion along their border and previous territories. However, Russia has made clear again and again that out of the world’s “leading nations”, they are the least concerned within maintain peace and positive relations with the rest of the world. A perfect example of their warlike ways and disregard for international law and their own treaties, was invading and annexing Crimea and later the entire nation of Ukraine. Not only were both actions completely illegal and uncalled for, they were explicitly against the Budapest Memorandum. Basically Ukraine (also Belarus and Kazakhstan) was convinced to give up all the Nuclear Weapons left in their nations from when they were a part of the Soviet Union. The US, Russia, England, and also to a lesser degree China and Francd Gabe assurances to not invade or attack them except in self-defense and also to come to their aid if they were attacked. If they choose to keep the weapons, I doubt Russia would have ever chosen to invade them as it could have easily have led to a nuclear exchange. Instead Russia chose to ignore its agreement, its place as a world leader in the UN Security Council, and invade annex Crimea and later a ton of the Eastern Ukraine. Like they said in the video, Russia has also invaded a handful of other countries like Georgia and Chechnya. So long story short…if Russia had acted peaceful in the past since the Soviet Union fell I may be inclined to feel like NATO did provoke Russia by expanding so far East. However Russia made it clear that it didn’t care about keeping the peace or respecting their peace treaties or international law. Therefore it makes tons of sense for nations afraid that Russia would target them next would seek membership in NATO to help prevent them from being Russia’s next victim. Basically Russia is saying NATO and these countries joining provoked us… when in reality Russia’s actions pushed these nations into seeking out allies because protections is always better in numbers.
