This song was a cover of the song by Steve Goodman made famous by an earlier cover by Arlo Guthrie. The Highwaymen was a super-group made up of the elder statesmen of 'outlaw country' subgenre of country music. It featured Willie Nelson (who sang this), Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristtofferson. They performed together from 1985 to 1995 and released three albums. Their biggest hit was "Highwayman" that features a verse sung by each of them. You need to do a reaction to that one! I once saw them in concert. It was the best concert I've seen. Not being a country music fan, I wasn't expecting much but it was wonderful. Each song just rolled into the next continuously with each sing taking the lead in succession. They played all their respective hits plus the group's few hits. This video is from one of those concerts.
