The upsetting thing is most Jiu Jitsu schools don't go through the self defense aspect of jits, my school included. I think all schools should teach every aspect of jits.

Lol this week, Rickson also appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience. Eddie Bravo was also a guest. There's a video here on KZbin that shows Eddie and Rickson talking to each other AFTER the Joe Rogan Podcast. Eddie is also showing some 10th Planet techniques to Rickson. Eddie was so excited to meet Rickson that he was speaking so fast and he is breathing so heavily. It's hilarious.

As much as some people like to hate on the Gracies, their jiu-jitsu was developed as a martial art, not a sport. Watch how Royce dealt with strikers in the early UFCs-- there was clearly more to his techniques than just "duck and shoot". We need more of this in jiu-jitsu schools today. Sport is great, but being able to defend yourself is clearly very practical for anyone, not just someone looking for medals.

@@whiskeybeerbeer I dunno. If I had the chance I wouldn’t be pushing any more than he wanted me too as well. But yes in a Gracie barra school this is exactly how he says it’s a second class move. Maybe third. Keep arm. Look left. Roll off shoulder and catch head before it even touches ground and side mount. With legs. Sitting down legs bump up and look left so friction roll off. But he definitely does look nervous lol. Like anyone who’s ever touched that kind of person where it feels like your touching a human shaped movable stone.

Yeah. I do jiujitsu, but I feel like the stand-up isn't there. I boxed and wrestled before so I know some, but I'd love to get the wrestling and grappling down like the ground fighting. I can say that the ground work is second to none. I roll with judo black belts, and when I get them to the ground (which means "when they throw me on my head") I can do some serious work from there.
@luisphilipesilva

@@ShiddyShad808 ok now so a black belt in Bjj to fight on the street as to take boxing or kickboxing lessons and judo as well ??? Is this what you are saying? Because Bjj doest have those skills now ... So if I have to do cross training for defense, so why learn Bjj when I can get all that in any mma gym? ?? A martial art should prepare you for anything. .. doing pounces and kicks, learning to defend them as well , having defenses against knifes and baseball bats learning to do stand up fighting as well ground fighting ... A martial art must have all these aspects and Bjj doesn't have them so why training in something incomplete? ???? If I have like you say to learn boxing , kickboxing and judo it's better to do MMA then instead of Bjj. ... like you said your black belt friends know to strike, kick and Bjj well they didn't learn that in jiu-jitsu school so they had to do cross training. .. so if that's the idea why training jiu-jitsu in the 1st place???? I think that what Rickson is doing its fantastic, he is trying to create what it should be done a long time ago the (densho ) of the art ....The curriculum for all Bjj schools like any other martial arts have ... he is trying to complete the jiu-jitsu and establish it as a martial art with all the Densho ruling Bjj the sport issue it's a decision of the student the art is created for self-defense and to built the virtuosity of Budo in each student for life , the competition should be a student choice and not the focus of the jiu-jitsu Rickson he is doing the right thing ...

The problem here is that Jake is a sport BJJ guy. Not a Gracie Jiu-jitsu guy. I'm sure he has not done that defense in maybe 10-12 years. In sport BJJ everything starts from the ground. Rickson, I am a great fan of you and your skill, and your family, and most of all, you father. The Great Hélio Gracie. I practice jiujitsu in Brasil, and aikido. You are talking about a "force" that in aikido is called "ki". A big huge, Master. E agora, entendendo essa sua explicação, vejo que você sempre usou essa energia que chama de invisible jiu jitsu. Só um grande Mestre poderia perceber, entender e usar essa energia. Sou mais fã ainda. Abraço.

There really is a difference between Sport oriented MA's and styles that are for self defense or hand to hand combat. I think sports have hurt the martial arts in that many styles don't teach proper self defense anymore.

For everyone that has a serious problem with what Ryron and Rener have done with their Combatives system, let me tell you that their absolute main focus is street readiness and I have yet to see a more thought out and organized system in ANY martial art, much less BJJ. I know Rickson probably does not approve of distance learning through DVDs but they share the same real world fighting principles. ...and Jake did a great job in the interview. I would be nervous as hell too!
@tjl4688
@tjl4688 4 жыл бұрын
Rickson doesn't mind distance learning, but he took issue with giving out blue belts online. That has changed with the introduction of the Combatives Belt, which is just a technical/ceremonial belt. Now all official belt test and stripe tests must be done in person.

This has always been one of my favorite videos, even now in 2020. As much as I have always loved this video, I still have to point out that nobody would ever through a punch like that (the way Rickson threw a slow/simulated punch at Jake and Jake deflected it) in a real fight. But its still an excellent video, and BTW, I would be so nervous to do a video with Rickson and then post it, that must have been nerve wrecking. Much respect to Jake.

Love Rickson, but this just isn't practical... Anyone here heard of Geoff Thompson - pioneer of 'The Fence' *shrugs. #BJJ
@mark9104
@mark9104 8 жыл бұрын
I would think it is probably because of different background, Geoff used to be a doorman in Coventry where it was famously violent, so everyone approaching he would have to expect an attack. I am sure you read his book where he talked about about pre-emptive strike as well. In Brazil as one of the top Gracie, most of the fights (other than Vale Tudo) Rickson had I would think were challenges, in dojo or from other school. If you watch those early Gracie videos you see a lot coming from close quarter insult then slap then a fight, so his style would work, because it would be a chest to chest bluffing, slap, scuffle then groundwork
@MsSuperww
@MsSuperww 8 жыл бұрын
This is not practical?! Come on! Not only this guy and many of his family members have had many street fights, fighting challenges and professional vale-tudo fights, but it is clear for whoever sees the video that it is functional and practical what he is teaching. Maybe Geoff Thompson does have a better approach or better techniques to show. We should check it. But to say this is not practical is really too much! What he is teaching is only a small part of what he knows and teaches to his students and it is clear that what he is teaching coulde be used by many individuals in many circumstances. Some people seem to believe that every street fight will be some ruthless battle against some fighting specialist coming out of the UFC. Thats not reality in most cases though. And the techniques used by the Gracies already have been proved effective to deal with many circumstances, even against bigger, stronger and well trained opponents.

Loved it when a trained killer grabbed Jake by the shoulder chuckles, & says "relax my brother". Probably going to do everything, but make you relax. I guess a variation of the old sniper saying- If you run you'll only die tired works here as well. If you struggle you'll only tap tired.
