I am a black belt under 2 Rickson Gracie black belts, Luiz Calaudio and Thiago Veiga. I went to a 2 day long Rickson seminar in Shaumber, IL in 2013. And let me just say that Rickson makes everyone feel like they don't know much. He is famous for details and modifications of techniques. He taught this exact same technique to a room of 200 people, many of them HIS OWN BLACK BELTS. I didn't roll him, but I guess you feel even dumber when you do, from all accounts. I don't see why everyone is picking on Jake. He is open to the smallest details on the most basic of movements. That is what a martial artist should be like. He is a black belt. His black belt has nothing to do with your belt. Just as his understanding of technique has nothing to do with yours. Just like Rickson's understanding of technique has nothing to do with yours. Be a martial artist and have some humility. Nobody knows everything. Zip it and go train jiu-jitsu.

Props to BUDO Jake for doing this. A huge part of martial arts is humility. TO post this he is obviously putting himself out there to be criticized by haters on the internet. However, he is doing an invaluable service to the BJJ community showing this video. Awesome Jake, I've always liked your videos and respected your open mindedness in martial arts, but now you have 110% of my respect! oss!!!

I've been in BJJ for almost 3 years now. I never saw someone paint such a complete picture of what jiu-jitsu actually is. He's clearly a fantastic instructor with immense clarity and vision. At first it's invisible, but then you really see what's really going on in the movement, the pressure, the positioning. I'm really looking forward to the future for BJJ with Rickson Gracie taking charge.

I recently purchased his new Self-Defense Unit series. I've been training under a Rickson Gracie blackbelt for over a decade now and still find it valuable. The biggest advantage I feel is how Rickson tells you where your weight should be and that can make all the difference in making things click.

Respect to Jake for putting his ego aside for this. No shame in being corrected by Rickson Gracie, no matter what your rank.
@silveronthehill
@silveronthehill 8 жыл бұрын
I disagree a little bit. It would show a real putting aside of ego if it was say a white belt that was correcting Jake (assuming that the person actually could correct technique). Allowing a higher degree black belt to correct your technique is just maintaining beginners mind.
@silveronthehill
@silveronthehill 8 жыл бұрын
one additional thing real quick, white belts are actually very good teachers for black belts because they don't have those programed responses/movement, they show how someone on the street will respond. shows how good your technique really is.
@mistermendola
@mistermendola 8 жыл бұрын
point taken David Arginteanu, but still- he's publicly exposing flaws in his most basic of basic, bjj101 fundamentals as a black belt. sure, we could probably think of plenty more ego-destroying exercises if we brainstormed, but i'm still impressed with this.

I think this video is a great example of one of the benefits of getting a private (1on1) lesson versus a normal group class. Not saying groups are bad (variety of classmates, etc.) but a private every now-n-then is a good way to sharpen specific skills.

@Seegie16 7 жыл бұрын
I fully agree and not only from Rickson. Ive taken privates from no name Barra black belts and if you ask them to teach the basics theys show you this same upa with the ame head movement detail. In a group class its easy for the teacher to overlook this little detail and just show the technique. Sometimes you really have to observe the shapes that the teachers bodies are making and not just listen to the detail. Your eyes can show you more than your ears.

My favorite Rixon story; I was attending a seminar in Miami, I paid $400 for a two day course, and I was having difficulty with an armbar from the Guard. My partner called Rixon and he came over and watched me for a few attempts without success. Then, like an uncle or a brother, he put his hand on my shoulder and said " my brother, you lose 40 pounds and you get that armbar". That was the most expensive lesson I ever got. But I loved it, his honesty and devotion to Jiu Jitsu are hard to find.

My first bjj teacher Brandon Hetzler is a black belt under Rickson Gracie and this exact technique right here was one of the very first things I learned when joining back in 09'. The "upa straight back and never to the side" along with many other "invisible techniques" that I use to this very day, I find some purple belts at other schools haven't yet learned, essential things the Rickson Gracie style regarded as basics that all white belts should know before earning the first stripe are literally neglected by the large influx of bjj schools and teachers that like to focus on fast pace tournament style teaching.

What amazes me is the ability Rickson has to grasp what the student (not his) knew as he planned his lesson plan and he was dead on as Jake didn't know the basics. That is what the coral belt represents: mileage.

I bet you Jake learned the upa the right way from Carlinhos and Feitosa but after years of doing more advanced techniques you forget that little invisible detail. And Rickson knows that a majority forget. It could have been any black belt. Ive even heard Ricksons own black belts are humbled on something very basic when he comes in and teaches. If you dont practice that basic invisible stuff and start moving ob to advanced stuff for years, you forget. Simple as that.

After watching this again and again I can see how Rickson is a rare master. He has respect for his student, and that is rare. And he has an understanding of the tiniest movements that make the biggest differences. I have learned from his two students, Tiago and Luis, and the Rickson method is a whole new experience. They can be successful in slow motion as well as on the fly, which is a test of how effective a technique really is.
