Don’t forget the smog pump, gigantic catalytic converter, EGR too. Back then, technology was lacking to support compliant emissions and decent power. Today, we can have both - in 1980 it was an either/or proposition. It’s all relative too: most cars in 1980 had well under 200 horsepower, so this was one of the more powerful cars of its day.

Anybody else wondering why they didn't use a blow through set up for the Turbo system? Back in the sixties, centrifugal supercharged cars had their carburetors encased in a blower pressurized box. That solved a lot of the problems that are inherent in the draw down style Turbo cars that came 10 plus years later.

I suppose it's better to keep it stock in terms of collector value, but I always see these low HP high displacement engines as an opportunity to make large improvements. Thanks for the video. At 16 years old in 1982 I bought a 1980 Turbo-Trans-Am with 22,000 miles in near-new condition. The car that I traded-in to purchase the car was a 1979 Corvette L-82. The dealer gave me the Trans-Am and 2,500 cash back for the Vette. The Turbo T/A was red with red interior, all options but T-Tops. Having no T-Tops made the car ride tight and smooth with zero rattles. Mine was fast and a total blast to drive. It handled awesome. I drove it like a movie stunt car everywhere I went. I could do power-slide drifts down dirt roads for a half-mile. I regularly ran from cops and was never apprehended once. Even if the cops came to the house I was scott-free because once I was out of the car before they arrived, they had no proof that I was the actual driver. Regularly averaged around 15-20 mpg. Super reliable car which required nothing other than routine maintenance though I drove it extremely hard on a daily basis. Never once failed to start for any reason. Great factory sound system with 8 track. My favorite 8-track tape was Boston. The ladies loved it and I got laid on a regular basis by the most bodacious babes. Pure dream car. I would love to drive it today. Thanks again.

I didn't understand why he didn't want all the bright orange pennant flags that it he'd in the showroom. It was a horrible car, in tye rockers you could see the primer through the paint, the electronic gauges never worked right, if you used the cigarette lighter it would blow fuses and the morning after my dad brought it home it wouldn't start. @prushimush5 жыл бұрын
@Ellenor Malik I am not sure if I have ever heard anyone assert that a GM G-body, which includes the Grand National, is a grand tourer. These are body-on-frame cars with solid rear axles and rattly 80s interiors. Not exactly something that would be comfortable on long distance high speed drives. American muscle started to blur the lines with grand touring style cars in the modern era when they introduced IRS, comfortable seats and low NVH interiors - S550 Mustang for example, but not really in the 80s. The GN was a legendary car of the 80s but its heritage is more in circle track and traditional American muscle - and it is muscle in spite of its V6 engine. We can recall that original factory-spec American muscle cars such as the Pontiac GTO and Chevelle SS 396 were large, full size cars, so muscle doesn't necessarily mean small. G-body cars were shorter than these cars.

I bought one brand new at the age of 18 from a dealer in Southwest Wisconsin where I lived. I had ordered a Z28 Camaro and it was taking a long time to arrive so while visiting the dealership I noticed this in the showroom and made a deal trading in my 1976 Camaro. He is right about not being the fastest but it handled and cornered very well. The speedometer only went to 90 mph and I had it pegged several times. The dash lit up in red at night adding to the coolness factor--and of course the T-tops off on a warm summer evening...Throw in some Van Halen blasting on the stereo. It was definitely an eye-catcher making some guys jealous and some girls curious. I had loads of fun in that car and never regretted buying it. I moved to Dallas, Texas, and sold it in 1985 to a businessman across the street from where I worked. It had 31,000 miles at the time.

The last gasp for the muscle car era- the REAL big-inch cars- was 1970. You could argue the 73-74 Super Duty 455 Firebirds, but anything past that was a tape stripe special- lots of show and no go. Increased insurance rates, two gas crises, bumper standards, and emission standards strangled the life out of cars, and it took Detroit’s years to recover. The 70s were the dark ages.

I own a 1980 black/gold turbo trans am. I was told when I bought it that the engine was rebuilt. Truth was, only the carburetor was redone. It drove well but I am not a speed demon so I can't testify that it was very speedy. The 4.9 engine with the turbo lasted 38 years...until my husband drove it and blew the engine. He paid a great mechanic in our area to swap out the engine/turbo/transmission and give us an LS1 with fuel injection. He also arranged with a muffler place to install a 40 Flowmaster. The inside of the car had been trashed and it had silver FORD rims on it so, we refinished the interior with aftermarket items but were able to keep the original dashboard, steering wheel and back seat. The bird on the hood is the original bird and we did buy new after market snowflake rims for it. I get all kinds of compliments when I drive it from people giving a thumbs up while driving to people asking if it is for sale when I stop for gas. A man saw that beautiful engine and loved the interior/exterior so much that he offered me $60,000 cash (said he's run to the bank and get the money right now) but I turned him down. Why? Because I love this car, had a lot of work put into it and it has the added bragging rights of being used by Hollywood studios. The previous owner is a casting director or assistant director or whatever and she would rent it out to the studios. She told me that Danny Trejo drove it but she wasn't sure if it was in the movie or the TV series "From Dusk Til Dawn". She also gave me a picture of Mark Boone standing near it and said he drove it in Sons of Anarchy. It is also here on KZbin in 3 videos so.....I love bragging about its Hollywood History. I will never sell it. My husband will......when I'm dead. The only other car I drove that I would consider swapping it out for is...……………………..a Lambhorgini Huracan...as if that's going to happen (yeah sure). Wouldn't have any other vehicle besides my hellatiously bitchin black/gold Trans Am. No, it's not a "turbo" anymore but I won't remove the emblem on the back that says it's a Turbo. My husband will explain it all to any prospective buyers so they are not mislead into thinking they are getting a Turbo TA.

I remember these cars well. The first speed trick required a hammer......to bend the waste gate rod slightly to limit how far it would open. The best part is the indicator lights in the hood so that you knew when the car was supposed to be making power.

So strange I saw one of these in downtown Bangkok. Talked to the proud owner who had it imported back in the day

atleast in my country most Priuses are taxis/ubers so it makes sense. always speeding and not caring about company car

Speed, and acceleration, are two entirely different things.

Yep. My Prius goes 115 mph but takes a long while to get there.

They're entitled to speed, they're saving the earth one mile at a time . . . or so they think.

My very first car I bought in 1978 was a triple green 1969 Firebird with a 400cid Catalina engine with a 400 automatic with limited slip rear end. Loved that car, sold it to go to college, now I rarely see them. The Triple green ones I mean.

Is this really the "last breath" of American muscle? Perhaps for original plaforms. It is one of the final iterations of the 1970 second generation F-body. "Body by Fisher". The curves disappeared with the third-generation F-body cars, but they were given fuel injection and a panhard bar, and made much lighter. It certainly is not the end of American muscle. 1980 was a tough year with CAFE and EPA laws in the US but by 1984 the Mustang GT had returned the Camaro Z-28(in infamous IROC trim) was back and GM G-bodies were very common with the same small block engines from decades past. This isn't even the last Turbo Trans Am. Pontiac released a limited-edition Turbo Trans Am in 1989, so the third-gen F-body got its own take on forced induction. By 1989 Vortech-supercharged Foxbody Mustangs were doing work on the streets with sequential fuel injection. This is the "5.0" legacy recalled by the modern Coyote 5.0. Baby boomer muscle may have been on life support, but modern muscle was just getting started.

Very well said, and while not as many remember it as a muscle car of the 80's don't forget about the Buick Grand National it was a true sleeper muscle car.
@prushimush5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I ought to have mentioned the GN with the G-bodies, they are tough cars. I am a Ford guy but I have to give credit to GM, they worked with turbos in the 60s with Oldsmobile Turbo Jetfire and the Corvair, and even the late 70s and 80s when Detroit was in a slump.

the 301 was supposed to be in the third gen but GM killed it to save money and preserve what was left of the corvette since the new TTA would blow it out of the water

I had a white 79 TA with red interior and the 6.6 under the hood. I drove it like a grandma for the year I owned it. Sold it to my friend who totaled it in an accident 2 weeks later. But not before racing every one of our friends late at night - and going undefeated. Moral of the story. Drive safe out there. Because if people will t-bone a white trans-am with honeycomb wheels and a red screaming chicken on the hood, they will probably slam in to just about anything.

ouch, I hate hearing that! Totaled 2 weeks later..... I bet hes still cryin over that..

There used to be one of these in my neighborhood where I grew up. Used to see it all through the 1980's. Another neighbor a few streets away eventually got a Corvette pace car edition and an old school satellite dish ( in the very late 80's ). That Corvette was to see on my to the store, it went away when the house was taken by a highway expansion project four years ago ..

Hard to believe that in only 2 years that 1970s design would be replaced by the Knight Rider Trans Am. Fun fact: The first two cars right off the production line went to become the first of many KITT cars for the TV show. That's the Trans Am I loved, back when I was a wee lad of twelve.

All show and no go. My friends in high school each kids to a Trans Am when they got a license. At the time It really did not think about that but now think it was crazy to give a kid a brand new performance car. This car was all show and no go.
