About:
After the OGL (Open Gaming License) scandal of 2023, Jakin decided to try TTRPGS (Tabletop Roleplaying Games) other than D&D (Dungeons & Dragons). He tried Pathfinder 2e (Second Edition) and even streamed it with his friends. After a few sessions, it was clear the game wasn't for him. He enjoyed being a player, but not running the game. Later that year, he attended GenCon with the OSQ (One Shot Questers) crew and got to play test the Dungeon Coach's DC20. Ever since then, Jakin has been obsessed with game. He quickly convinced all of his current D&D home games to convert to the DC20 system and he hasn't looked back. Some features that stand out to him are the Action Points, the Ancestry Points, how similar it is to D&D, and how you don't have to roll damage! Unlike Pathfinder's 3 action economy, DC20 has a four action economy that allows the players to move, attack, defend, or give themselves advantage. With the Ancestry Points, two players can play a Human and have totally different ancestry features! In DC20, you don't roll damage. Instead, each weapon has a base damage. So when you roll to attack, if you meat or beat the PD (physical defense), you deal that damage! PLUS, for every increment of 5 that you go over the PD, you get to add an additional point of damage!

I'll 2nd the all fair point comment, but with a follow-up. There is 2 one shots you can watch where the creator GMs for party comprised of D&D Yiutubers/influencers. They're arr probably more 3rd party too. As for the paying part it's well worth it, currently on sale for $5. You get all the alpha updates until the beta luanches with kickstarter, which will be enough for player to reach level 5-10. That is equivalent or better than a starter box for much cheaper. The ad feel is a by-product from us on the hype train for DC20 using our word of mouth to boost this small indie creator. His 5e homebrew stuff was great, and I'm loving DC20. We want it to be one of the new gen TTRPG big names, but his team doesn't have the Ad budget like Wizards, Piazo, or Critical Roll/Darlington Press

Good video for summarizing key mechanics of the game. On another note, overhyping this as the fabled "Dnd Killer" will put weighty expectations that will have skeptics scoffing at DC20, and followers being dissapointed. @@bakedstreetytSure you can absolutely homebrew whatever you like, and there's nothing wrong with that. But having a base game with a common set of rules is great because then anyone can sit down to play at a table and understand what's going on. Playing homebrewed games can cause a lot of confusion and misunderstanding.

Instead of ancestry points like you were talking about, I still prefer 13th Age's background points. It helps you to customize character backstory and acts as a skills system that's customized to the character itself. It's not rewriting aspects of the race (ie, "human"), but you can assign points to literally any background you want for the character ("he was a farmer who joined the Emperor's army then joined a traveling circus when he got out, so I'm taking 3 points for Farmer, 3 points for Soldier, and 2 points for Circus Performer") and then add those points as a modifier on skill checks when it makes sense that the character would have learned that skill as a part of that background. So high customization to avoid cookie-cutter characters but still pretty simple. (The game also gives you ability score bonuses that you can choose where to apply based on your class and race, so there's a bit of customization there as well.)

I'll look for a review of DC20 when its out, but it's probably not going to be my thing. I wasn't very enamoured with either 5e or PF2, and have gone back to 3e and started home brewing it to be more GURPS or Rolemaster like. Which, is just a very different kind of TTRPG. That said, I've also been considering dropping rolled damage.

I haven't played 2e from the DM side of the screen, but I am absolutely incredulous to the notion that it is simpler to run than 5e. I can imagine certain things being easier, the environmental effects seem way more versatile and plug-and-play compared to 5e's "here's a vague template, figure it out" and Pathfinder modules have always been way more intuitively written than anything WotC has ever published, but the sheer number of moving parts compared to 5e, and the volume of PC abilities that need to be accounted for when designing an encounter seems way more daunting than the game I run when I was want to operate on vibes alone.
@GuybrushTThreepwood
@GuybrushTThreepwood Ай бұрын
@@gonzoengineering4894 you don't really need to account for player options when creating encounters. Most of the "encounter breaking abilities" in both systems are spells, and 5e's spells are MUCH worse in those regards. The fact that player options are intentionally balanced and there's very simple encounter building guidelines that actually work make running 2e a lot simpler. Want a moderate encounter? Add things until your encounter has 80xp in it, it actually will be. Want a 50/50 for a tpk? Go ahead and use 160xp for an extreme encounter. Traps and hazards also have xp and follow the same rules, and you can mix and match.
@MikeTsquared
@MikeTsquared Ай бұрын
@gonzoengineering4894 I understand your trepidation, and in *some* situations your absolutely correct. But u can confidently say that for me (and many others) the majority of all encounters and events are easier to run in PF2e. And I ran 5e for 8 years before trying PF2e. On paper it seems like a absolute dump truck of things to track, but in practice I find it runs much smoother. Of course, each person will have a different experience. I just find that while there are more gears, they run so much smoother.

I might well take a look at this. But I find PF2 and 5E to be walled gardens. Whenever I read either rule set I just find myself running into things a player can't do. The very idea of stat caps simply appalled me. Stat caps? In high fantasy? I still consider PF1 to be the best high fantasy set of rules ever written. A close second would be Radiance, also a D20 based system.

personally I rather have a rules heavy system, it might be a little harder to get into pf1e or d&d3.5, but the breadth of 3rd party content they support is insane nowadays, I feel so constricted when I try 5e. Pf2e is a bit better, but I'd want like another decade of class/archetypes/spells/feats/traits/options for it like it's predecessor already offers. The extra rules in pf1e are also quite helpful in lightening the load for DMs as they don't have to improvise so much. And now that I've played it for a while it's pretty easy for me to help new players learn the system while they're in my games.

One question I had after downloading the game is that the classes are only defined for levels 1 and 2 at the moment? Do we need to be on the Patreon to see the levels 3+? Because I cannot imagine running a DC20 campaign if it stops at level 2, especially as a GM who loves high-stakes campaigns (Exalted being my favorite RPG). I do understand that it's still under construction, obviously, and that balance could be way off still. But I could cope with that.
@swordplaysorcery
@swordplaysorcery 5 күн бұрын
Currently, everyone has access to levels 1-2. The finished game will have all classes going to level 10 and then the option to have prestige levels after that! So, even though class levels are capped at 10, there technically won't be a max level cap for your character like D&D

I've played 1e - 3e (and numerous other rpg's), and I've seen a lot of 5e actual play, and I think all the versions, even 4e, are solid games and have a lot to offer, but they've all got their flaws. What's unique to me now is that a lot of people are putting good solutions to those flaws into their own games, and the results are often excellent games in their own right. This one looks very promising, too.

I found it quite jarring and disappointing that you got to the concept of classes not being tied to ability scores/attributes (*easily* the most interesting part of the video, in my view) but rather than expanding on that, you veered off into just saying how much you like the game overall in a manner more fitting to the start of a video than partway through. 😕

@captnjd
@captnjd 28 күн бұрын
I bought the alpha; your damage is not only based on the weapon, it's based on how high you beat an enemies Physical Defense (AC in D&D5E terms) with your Attack. So if you beat their PD by 5 or more, you deal more damage, 10 or more, even more damage. Your Attack scores are determined by things that relate to your player level, the higher the level, the more you add to your attack, meaning the higher your chance of you beating an enemy's PD by 5 or 10 is. It's still an alpha, but this is a great point. It does seem like the team behind DC20 has done their best to balance the game, haven't played it for myself yet though.

In DC20, your Prime Attribute is always going to be equal to your highest Attribute. For example, the max an attribute can be at level one is 3. Therefor, if you chose to have Charisma be your highest attribute (with a score of 3), then your prime will equal 3! The attributes in the game are still important for various reasons (Might = Health, Agility = Armor, Charisma = Grit, etc) but no matter which one you prioritize, the Prime will match that!

This video highlights a lot of this issues I have with a lot of the upcoming "new systems". They are so much like 5e, and if you play 5e, they will be so easy to play... So why don't I just play 5e?? Most tables homebrew things that don't work so they do work, so unless I'm starting a brand new table with people who don't have a lot of experience, playing something so 5e-adjacent is just gonna end up with us tweaking the rules we like the same way we did with 5e until our tweaked DC20 looks just like our tweaked 5e. So there's literally no point. Making 5e clones just means I gotta shell out a fortune for a whole new list of books. Don't get me wrong, WotC have done me no favours and I don't actually buy official D&D titles anymore, but I started collecting books years ago, so I have dozens of 5e compatible books, and there are new 3rd-party content books for 5e every month - I'll never run out of game ideas. So why am I learning a bunch of small, intricate rules to subtly change the system I've already refined with my current tables?? Drastically different systems, or systems that bridge between two different systems for a happy-medium, systems with a lower bar to entry or a drastically higher complexity, that's what is interesting. Something *different*, not something similar but maybe a bit better depending on preferences. Something, something, quote about thinking outside but pressed right up against the box. Don't give me a refined 5e experience and expect me to discard the thousands of dollars of resources I've already got just so I can start the drawn out process of shelling out (potentially, especially if it's successful) thousands more. If 5e is so bad that you need a different system, then make something that not easily mistaken for 5e. And if 5e works but you just don't want to support WotC, like me, for every official D&D 5e/5.5e release there are DOZENS of 3rd-party content releases from people who absolutely deserve your money and support.

It seems like an interesting system. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to get anyone to play it. I quit playing online because it's such a terrible role playing experience, which means I play locally. Locally people only want brand recognition; DnD, PF, WH40k, etc. No one is willing to try other things, which is sad.

A lot of that is aversion to ascending a new learning curve, in my experience. Simplified systems can be extremely quick & easy for D&D players to pick up; sometimes it's less work than playing a new 5e expansion book.

DC20 FTW. THIS game just feels awesome to me and I love how the dungeon coach just attacks all of the something problem or unintuitive mechanics of 5e and makes them into something cool and interesting. Meaningful choices is really the goal here and engagement in the game overall. Thank you for promoting this great system to be.

LOL, how cute. Everyone thinks they're going to come up with the thing that finally kills D&D, but even if it sucks sometimes (coughs in 5.5e), it's still an amazing game with a dedicated fanbase that's undergone numerous revisions over the years. You can't just upstage D&D 5e if your game isn't even at 1e, especially if you can't acknowledge the positive qualities of your opponent, and simply demonize it instead.

Being less of a mess than 5.5e, is hardly a recommendation. Pf2 is not simple to pick up & start DMing, which is the aim of DC20 & other "simplified" systems... Homebrew means relearning for every table; but many "simplified" systems leave so much to DM fiat, that you're relearning for every table anyway... It seems very rare to find a system that is simpler than 5e or Pf2 to start DMing, yet still covers enough bases to be consistent between tables without relearning how each DM plays it. If DC20 accomplishes that, then I'm _very_ interested. If it's yet another "rules light" role-playing system with more suggestions than mechanical layers, then I'm not interested. I haven't seen enough to tell, yet!

So... the worst version of D&D and the crappy version of Pathfinder had a love child, and it is somehow good? No, somehow great? Your opening statement makes me want to avoid it. Okay, yeah, I listened to the whole thing. You didn't change my mind. I'm just too old, I guess, to appreciate all the things new players like in their games. I can do all the things you extoll by using my OWN umagination. I've never needed "rules" in order to customize my characters and give them flavor. hard pass. Too much of what I DON'T need, and nothing really of what I do.
