Love how everyone’s takeaway from harsh criticism of a bricked board that’s badly-designed and costs $400 is just “wow just like Chyros” lmao

This is the equivalent of being dropped off in the middle of the ocean with floaties and the boat drives off saying that said floaties are enough. At least a bare minimum "wireless" boards need a hardwire.

I’m working on a cross between a split ergodox-variant keyboard layout with programmable RGB LEDs with game controller properties integrated, and I happen to have a lot of Bluetooth knowledge at a low level. I’m not even going to look at wireless, because yes, even if I didn’t have power-hungry LEDs to concern myself with, or the radio power, Bluetooth in a good spot is still more trouble than it’s worth for reliability. Note that the Logitech Wireless tech, while not Bluetooth, still has the same sort of signal issues as Bluetooth, since they use the same 2.4 Ghz bands, and I’m logically guessing like Bluetooth, they do frequency-hopping. Antenna design along with EMI design issues adds an extra level of difficulty to getting things correct and sufficiently reliable. And using chips harvested from previous devices? WHAT??? I’ve got a formal electronics background, just getting back into it after about 30 years of building anything, and I’m not using a pre-existing keyboard PCB because of what I’m doing. I’m also using an incredibly-overpowered microcontroller. One of the things to understand about printed PCB design is the biggest thing to get right is to not accidentally create radio transmitters and receivers that you didn’t intend: if it isn’t done right and is effectively a receiver, any EMI in the area (including itself) will render it horribly unreliable. If you have a noisy design, it becomes more of a radio transmitter, and you’ve got EMI that may even cause itself problems, besides other devices. It’s important to understand that printed circuit board traces are wave guides for the electric and magnetic fields going through the circuits, as well as possibly acting as antennas for transmitting/receiving. The visual design of the reviewed keyboard is nice, but WOW, that on/off switch location is the design choice of someone that hates their users, to put it nicely. I can’t help but think it was designed as either a stupid afterthought, or someone overly concerned with form over function and not having a way otherwise. That’s laziness. Add how expensive the batteries are with no wired backup option, I’d certainly be pissed to waste that much time and money on that garbage. Great review!

Great comment. Not really sure what the thought process was here, especially with the decision to avoid implementing a wired fallback

Since it seems to reuse Logitech IC, my guess is that is a feature not provided by Logitech. I have a Logitech wireless membrane keyboard and mice. Neither have wired as fallback.

Yea that Unigo66 is a cautionary tale. Also you don't want 2 USB to PC (you won't be able to use modifiers/layers), you need a serial connection between the halves. Wireless splits are pretty mature now, see nRFMicro/nicenano/ZMK.

The bad wireless connection can easily be a problem of the aluminium case. I mean, where should the signal pass through? The underside where the windows is, or through the switches. A no-go if you ask me.

I have a fully metal case on my nice!60 keyboard, but its bluetooth range is very good. The problem with this one is the metal case and the crappy transmitter. And it gets a full YEAR on a charge. ZMK boards are stupidly power efficient.

Closest tech for replacement PCB for this specific case is “Mitosis”, zmk might work too, worst case to accommodate bigger battery size might need to tweak/3d print replacement for that bottom transparent plate.

Aluminum and wireless only. I will never understand why the board was designed to not support wired mode as a backup.

I would even surprised if you could still write with that keyboard. The ability to use those dongle like that was bug and also a security issue. Logitech did fix this since the and we should not be able to use them to send text inputs. You idea of hand wireling is not bad (nice nano, zmk, 3d print a back extension). Those legs are also enough for some 3d printed clipped solution that can contain a lithium battery and the nice nano with it screen. This can be a nice keyboard with some plastic added to it.

That dongle of dongles is utterly ridicules, one of those dongles can connect to both modules if configured to with the software. Perhaps the official Logitech software wouldn't work, but perhaps a fork of Solaar could. It's just incredibly jank, though there must be some reason for making such a board, showing how hacky it is supposed to work. Would love to chat with the creator in technical detail as it looks interesting, but if the end result doesn't work for the user, it's still a fail.

Good lord this board is atrocious. I'll stick to the Ergodox Wireless/Ergoblue that SliceMK ran a few months back. ZMK firmware for easier flashing (albeit you have to flash each half and the dongle, if you use it), no jank “harvested logitech" chips, Bluetooth for easier multi-device pairing, solar for better battery life... Come to think of it, I can't name one thing I like better about this board vs blue. Except maybe the case, the machining looks nice.

Since i am confident in not breaking the board on soldering... I think I'll pick up Corne Split after watching this, 1/5th of the price and already proven to work too.
