Brooke Basse grew up spending a lot of time in the ocean, from surfing to diving, and the California native says she'd even live in the water if she could. A professional free diver and recreational spear fisher, Brooke says her tastiest meals are the ones she catches herself.

@@jaredtyra6311 I have done a lot of spearfishing and freediving on Oahu and Kauai. The most important rule is to never dive alone. That being said I often have done shallow shore dives alone. I have rules that I set for myself such a specific bottom time that I never exceed and surface intervals of 3-5 times my dive time. Still wrong to dive alone though A big safety issue as well is the conditions. I had a day at Ka'ena several months back where is was glass with no wind, eerie still. Next day it was pounding and the current was ripping. Make sure conditions are good and you start diving in safe places. Also, static apnea training is good but it is a totally different beast being 60-70 feet down trying to keep calm while your grunting for Uku or dusting for Mu. I can static about 4 minutes but my dive time spearfishing is usually 1:20 - 1:45. There is no substitute for time spent in the ocean. Find some diving buddies at school and learn from them. Also, listen to your body. Through experience you will learn to relax better and interpret what you are feeling.
@jarednielsen5041
@jarednielsen5041 4 жыл бұрын
@michael7dee Agreed! If you are taking risks of that level you need to be calculated and alert. Getting careless is when disasters happen. My favorite out of them all has got to be Mu. They are the smartest and most difficult fish I have ever shot. I swear they want to kill you lol. You have to have good bottom time and get their attention so they come to you. They primarily eat small lobster and crab so their flesh literally tastes a bit like lobster. It had incredibly delicate white meat that just melts in your mouth. Uku sashimi is phenomenal because of its texture and light flavor. Mahi is sweeter than both Uku and Mu. I don't love Mahi but I will definitely never turn it down.

Good for you Brooke, keep going. Spearfishing is a sustainable way to go, and if you know how to shoot a fish it is quick for them.

This makes it sound like she can hold her breath for several hours, even underwater, but because the current record is much lower than that, unless she’s secretly the true record holder and no one else knows about it, they might just mean that she dives a total of several hours. Not in one breath hold, but on many separate dives in a day with regular breaks to return to land.

Wow, that was an amazing video! You are my hero, and, being recently single, I have a crush on you. So, after University, I spent 3 months in Australia and dove every single day. From Brisbane to Cairns is where I lived. Diving around that spectacular reef. Only saw 6 or 7 reef sharks the entire time, but a female scuba diver got killed offshore by a Tiger shark, in 120 feet while I was there. But the facts down under are about, 20 saltwater crocodile every year (and hundreds of pets), and those nasty box jellyfish. To the north, by Cairns in the sub tropics, everyone was wearing Lycra full suits. But if you took a boat to the outer islands, you could swim with nothing. And, all those lethal snakes just scurry across the top or below. Maybe one death a year from someone's stupidity. And last, my maximum hold went from 30 seconds to 3.5 minutes. But I always went much less so I could recover quick. 25 meters was my max, but that is with cruising the bottom for 20 seconds or so. I only used a fiberglass pole with 3 prongs, and a bungee at the back. It was so basic compared to your setup, but it really worked. Now, my dream is to go for a big eye or yellow fin tuna, with a buoy trailing at the top, while slow cruising at 15 meters. OMG! Caio.

Not all fish comes to you. Sometimes the shot is made from a 5-6 meter distance. I routinely shoot (and often miss) fish from more than 3 meters. And if you have just a reel on your gun - it could be quite dangerous. Even a fish under 10 kilo below 15-20 meters can drown you unless you release the reel in time or cut your line. This is a tough activity unlike shooting deer drinking from a tank with an optical scope. Every dive you make can be your last one.

@@tanioraaura1274 And sometimes even lethal for both. I hate shooting fish point-blank and rarely do that. But people have a misconception about spearfishing. Sometimes it is indeed murder. But most of the time it is an exhaustive trip where you swim sometimes 1km to the place where you hunt, fight currents, watch out for boats above you and for nets and wires below. At least this is my experience. And sometimes you spend 3-4 hours in the water diving between 10 and 20+ meters and see absolutely nothing. There are no videos on KZbin about spearfishers seeing nothing. You see only the best. And when you get out of the water, you have 10 kilos of lead on you, a gun, fins and a wetsuit and you have to carry it uphill to your car. And sometimes even fish. I do not post any videos and never will. It is a private experience not to be shared with any one. And the worst part about hose videos is music. I hate that. Spearfishing is about silence and dissolving in your surroundings.

@@vrokhlenko It's as if we two left the car park together and went for a dive . I couldn't imagine the silence though. Theres dampen noises in the sea . Water splashing, bubbles , ears cracking, chin clicking , involuntary noises escaping the divers body. Your hunting instincts kick in and it's all about preparing yourself for a good eating fish. Then the reality joins your hunting skill. Stay calm relax to hold breath longer. *And oh No* 10 kgs of leads not enough.HOWEVER you manage to dive and hold your position by grabbing at weed on the bottom. Plenty fish where I dive. If theres no fish to be seen crack open urchins ..if the fish hit you at speed or no fish in the area. Wary!! Shark is near - Orcas- dolphins, Time to move elsewhere

I wish someone will give her several ANTI-SHARK HIGH-STRENGHT MARINE GRADE CHAINMAIL HEAD TO TOE SUITS that also covers her entire head and face and neck and hands and feet. One diver use one customized anti-shark suit of the same design and has 5 layers and also has 5 overlapping and intersecting metallic zippers and an outer conventional belt like fasteners and the only exposed part are three holes for the eyegoggles and breathing tubes that goes right through the additional anti-shark helmet with tough stainless steel bars which is connected to a vest like heavy duty chainlink armor and tightly secured with zipppers and belt like fasterners. In fact he is showing one shark is trying to take a bite at his right arm but the outer two layers of are a heavier and heavy duty and heavy gauge marine naval military grade stainless steel chainlink armor whose rings are welded together inside an argon filled chamber. REALLY TOUGH! The NATURAL SOLAR CYCLES induced NATURAL CLIMATE CYCLES is creating changes in the environment that it is attracting the humboldt squid that attacks unprepared humans as their next meal. Squid fishermen in the Sea of Cortés wrere killed by a pack of humboldt squids. LORETO, Mexico - A pack of giant squid capsized a fishing boat in the Sea of Cortés yesterday, killing seven fishermen.The band of sea creatures attacked the boat as it was returning to shore, creating a gruesome spectacle for late afternoon beach-goers.“I saw four or five bodies wash up on the shore. They were totally black and blue all over. They looked like they had been attacked by monster suction cups,” reported Timmy Irwin, a surfer visiting from San Francisco. Witnesses say the lone survivor was barely recognizable after being dragged from the boat and chewed by several of the giant squid. Marine biologists rushed to the scene hoping to catch at least one of the squid. Dr. Luis Santiago of the Universidad Autónoma Baja California Sur explained, “We captured one of the attackers. She is female and we believe most of the pack to be female because of their size. We also believe they coordinated the attack by using pigment cells to communicate, which is very typical in a situation like this. I’m afraid we may be seeing more of these attacks in the coming years, and possibly forever. “Beaches in the area are closed indefinitely, and fishing boats are banned from heading out to sea until authorities can determine a squid-free safety zone. Locals, who refer to the giant squid as “diablos rojos” - red devils, report that the legendary sea creatures have become more aggressive over the last few years. Marine biologists fear that the trend will continue because of the diminishing number of fish in their tropical hunting waters. Many legends surround the giant squid because of their size and their gang mentality. They have eight arms and two tentacles, all covered in suction cups lined with small teeth. They also have three hearts and eyes the size of soccer balls. They hunt in groups of at least 1,000. The giant squid can grow up to 40 feet long and 500 pounds, making them very difficult to combat. They survive so deep underwater that no light penetrates whatsoever. The pressure at that extreme level would crush any elephant or large land animal. The same humboldt squids are now attracted to Californian waters and numerous attacks are being reported at first until one woman scuba diver who is COMPLETELY CLUELESS OF THEIR MAN-EATING HABITS went to the Californian ocean and they started pulling her down and she thinks they are being playful in fact they are just testing her if she will fight back if they start attacking her, and they did start making testing attacks against her and she became frightened and successfully escaped because not only she is clueless of their dangerous nature BUT SHE IGNORES STORIES OF THEIR MAN-EATING HABITS! weeklyworldnews.com/headlines/29078/giant-squid-kill-fishermen/ Much more violent are the smaller Humboldt squid, which are known as "red devils" because of the colour they flash when in attack mode.
