I think the main thing that needs to be tackled is simplification of the overall mental model of how Wordpress works (as you’ve demonstrated so many times, it can be super confusing, even for some seasoned users). The onboarding flow you show here would be a pretty good start. That said, here are the low-hanging fruit features I’d like to see added: •• Ability to style link states (default, visited, hover, focus, active) •• Ability to show/hide page content (an accordion block) •• Option to auto smooth scroll to an anchor point •• Ability to define a base type size and then have relative sizes flow from there •• Ability to reorder pages on the PAGES screen •• Ability to maintain state of expanded/collapsed menus in the Styles panel (don’t force me to click open the Padding or Margin menus EVERY time I need to adjust them! It’s infuriating!) Currently doing most of the above with plugins but the fact that these things are not core is hard to believe.

Great points - did you see my video on how to add anchor links in Gutenberg?
@neilkahn19536 ай бұрын
@@jamiewp I hadn't seen your video but just watched it; looks great (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXeuqqGEn7x7adE). I've been using the Page Scroll To ID plugin, which seems to be very similar. Again, though - surprised this functionality isn't core. Thanks for the great content!

I wish there was a way to set a default featured image site wide. That would be super helpful as a blogger.

There's a plugin that will do this, it's called "Default Featured Image" by Jan Willem Oostendorp

1. More options for mobile navigation. 2. Settings for states - hover, focus, etc. 3. A link block where you can place any block to build cards, custom buttons, etc.

Patterns (with Categories & Images) EXPORT / IMPORT Jamie, I totally agree with you on the use of patterns being key. Right now, you can export/import one pattern at a time via “json” file. That is it! Categories are not carried along with it. And if there is an image in the pattern, it carries the original URL. I would like the ability to Export/Import ALL of my personal and customized patterns, from one website to another. And included in that Export/Import would be … ○ Bulk Export/Import all patterns checked off. ○ Categories that patterns have been assigned to. ○ Images that are used in the patterns. ○ Images put in a folder, that can be carried with exported patterns. This Will allow us as developers, to carry our repertoire of patterns from one website to another. Keeping categories & images in place. The cloud idea is great also, if we can use our own personal cloud storage. Along with bringing categories and images. This was all being done in some fashion with the "Pattern Manager" plugin. But per "Pattern Manager" plugin developer, "Development on Pattern Manager has stopped." Love the Speed Builds! 🥰

Like the Wordpress Studio Mac Application I want a Wordpress Server application that I can easily use to run a full server (maybe even on a Mac mini to test) at home. Now there are too many options and moving Wordpress installation on different hosting providers is such a hassle. I just want to test it or run it locally at home. (also a backup assistant by default without any plugins would be great!) 😊

I'd like to see some consistency in the settings. For example, when I add columns I have the options to set a border and a shadow but the border radius setting is not available. When I add a group I have the options to set a border and radius, but the shadow setting is not available. (Edited to add I want to see the same settings available on all blocks, not just the two examples I provided.) It would be nice to simply apply additional CSS code at the block setting instead of having to use a selector. For one, it's a pain having to go out of the page I'm editing to add the additional CSS. There are page builders and block plugins that have this capability. (Edited to add I'd still like to have the selector available for site wide styles, but having the ability at the block level for one offs would make things so much easier.) Another enhancement I'd like to see is the ability to save my custom style separately from the theme default style. Currently I have to edit the default style to suit my needs, but if I click on one of the other pre-loaded theme styles I lose my customizations whether I've saved them or not. It would be nice to be able to compare (or click something by accident) without losing my work.

Hi Arleen, great points, I almost included Class Based settings. The work GeneratePress are doing here is interesting. Have you seen that?

@@jamiewp Hi Jaime. Last year I began transitioning from Elementor and Breakdance so I set up a test site to assess the various block plugins and themes. I noted the GeneratePress theme was not yet FSE. I've been concentrating on using the Twenty-twenty four theme with mainly Spectra blocks. To be honest, I don't think any theme offers much benefit over 20-24. Anyway when I rated various block plugins, Spectra checked the most of my boxes, although in my notes I wrote GeneratePress blocks did have a nice dynamic content abilities. Was there something I may have missed that I should give another look?

I think they are all good points. The first option would be hugely useful for new users. There should be an option at the very beginning of the set up, a new user who gets taken through the onboarding or experienced user who can go straight to the settings. Regarding the second point I agree that these optional setting would be great in core but also I'm glad that third party tools do have even more granular tools. The third idea 100% as long as it is a free resource library with optional purchase items and not a paid subscription to access it.

I think you're an expert on WordPress design and development 🎉🎉 I don't want to be. That's your job. 😮😮 The idea of a simple on boarding process makes perfect sense to me for my needs. I just want it to work. I think starter sites are great and any improvement on that is excellent. After learning and keeping up with new updates for video editing, photography, graphic design, WordPress, content creation, SEO, live production and several plugin workflows, I don't have much time left to actually create anything. 😢😢

The two tier model you reference Jamie, in relation to the onboarding is how the entire editing UI should work - much as Apple's Logic Audio starts with a UI that feels very close Garageband, with 'pro' features hidden away. Users can switch to full LogicAudio featureset if and when they're ready - or really need a specfic functoinality. For WP this could apply to responsive, some dynamic content features, custom css etc. I think the lack of extended layout features has really held WP block editing back. For myself I find it incredibly frustrating searching through 3rd party block libraries to plug these gaps and TBH i just end up writing a whole lot of really bad !important-ridden css in a custom plugin, to work around all the inline css :( . The multi tier paradigm is echoed in the model you were talking about a few months ago when you mused about a side-builder (squarespace) verson of WP with deeper editing features hidden away. But why stop at two levels perhaps there could even be 3 tiers: 1 Owner, 2 Editor, 3 Builder - much as we have for user roles?

Really like a way to control the break points and the layout for different screen size sure like to test Mike McAllister style override. I have been building my own classic themes with boostrap that have all the col-md, col-lg classes - I really like to have that control at least with the column element.

Definitely need those mobile overrides. But why have a separate button for it? WP already has the screen size toggle. I feel like any settings applied while in tablet view or mobile view should automatically be considered an override.

I like I like Mike's idea of the "Style overrides"-controls for responsive web design. The one thing that worries me, WordPress works along a set template hierarchy, according to the diagram it works from left to the core templates on the right. Is it possible for a hacker to inject template-code that would take preference over the core template?

100% to all three. Especially the responsive tools. I get where they are going with how intrinsic design works, and when it does, it works great, but with the exception to the new flex grid in Gutenberg, which is not yet fully onboard (or stable), I'm just constantly reaching for third party block libraries, which have them.

Sure responsive design VS instrinsic design is still a hot debat but beyond that there some critical features often forgotten: responsive display of blocks, responsive order of blocks and better responsive menu. By the way, another problem is that mobile is now the king of usage and we are still see only demos on desktop so people don't see the real problems.
