We planted white onions, yellow onions, and a big sweet onion. I don't even remember the exact names. They were just what was available at our local greenhouse. I think I remember the sweet onion was called Texas. And one of them was called "Wall Walla."

Ozzie, thank you for your reply! I have tracked down some of the varieties you mentioned. In Australia, we normally grow onions from seed,

or we purchase seedlings, just raised from seed. I understand in the US, you plant “sets” which are more advanced seedlings, perhaps because of your severe winters. I recall I could not buy onion seed when I was in Texas.

The secret is luck! And it sure doesn't always go great every year. Our biggest advantage is how fortunate we are to have some really fertile soil where we live. Last year the weather worked in favor of the onions. I don't have any hard and fast rules as to when, but after almost 70 years of gardening in the same spot you start to kind of know. Every year deals a different hand, and it gets easier but it's never all that predictable. Thanks for checking in on our channel and for your kind words!

Just how many people are you supplying onions too? Will you be planting that many each year?

We actually ended up planting a little more than that this year, kinda by accident. We have enough ourselves to last the winter and we share a few with a good number of family and friends.
