Hey Lud, you’re an absolute legend for calling this out and it’s much appreciated. Andrew is a very thoughtful creator and it genuinely means a lot that you would stand up for him and smaller creators with your platform. I do do KZbin consulting, but I’m actually a straight up KZbinr with my own channel as well (albeit a tiny one with about 5K subs) and have had my content ideas also taken by much larger creators to much greater success, albeit in fortunately a less direct way. Contextually, Andrew actually only had 18K subs before we published the capsule hotel video, and even less when Brent stole the other video’s concept. Being so close to it, I respect him for how much work he put into it, and so am deeply appreciative of the time you took to talk about this.

@@alexkwan3 KZbinrs will ask me for advice on how to grow their channels, in exchange for a fee. In my case specifically, I focus almost entirely on storytelling - in other words, working on a lot of the specific details of how the video is edited. The reason KZbinrs would ask for that advice is because if you make a video in a certain way, then you get better retention (i.e. people watch for longer), and KZbin's algorithm will give your video more views if the retention is higher. Hence why I was part of Andrew's team in the first place, and why I was very very familiar with everything in the video.

The issue with these YT creators who make videos for a younger demographic is that their audience hasn't fully figured out how to handle finding out someone they look up to sucks. That younger audience tends to default to "anyone criticizing something I like is wrong." Not blaming the audience for that. It takes time and growth to be able to handle that sort of thing well. The times I've had creators I like do something awful have been genuinely difficult to come to terms with, as parasocial as that is. These creators can plagerize, they can disrespect the dead, they can say horrible things to people in person or in DMs and there won't be any real consequences. Their audience will defend them. I think it's super lame to take advantage of younger people like that.

I think it just comes down to respect for who you're taking the idea from. It's hard to come up with genuinely good ideas, so it makes sense that people take from others when they see one. But there's a huge difference between doing enough to look like you care and actually caring. For example, I've seen countless videos that stole an idea, and some literally say at the beginning "thanks to x youtuber for the idea". Also taking the effort to twist it to your own style/ put in your own work rather than a direct rip off is a big sign that you actually respect the person who came up with the idea. And if you're directly ripping an idea off of many different creators, that's too far

At 7:18 the topic of stealing video thumbnails came up. I had almost forgotten about the thumbnail stealing drama that happened a little over 2 years ago in mid-2020 between the large then roughly 6 million subscriber KZbin channel "DramaAlert" based in the USA, and the smaller, then roughly 600,000 subscriber count KZbin channel "JT", based in Britain. The short version of the story is that DramaAlert prominently used a JT thumbnail as a display to enhance viewership of a DramaAlert video about the banning by KZbin of the LeafyIsHere channel, without paying any artist fee to JT, and without even giving credit to JT within the KZbin video by DramaAlert. JT then issued a copyright strike, and then retracted after the threat of legal fees being run up to many hundreds of thousands of British pounds, and in addition paid to DramaAlert an amount of money roughly equal to what an artist fee would be. For more than 2 years, the JT channel on KZbin has been mysteriously silenced, perhaps as a hidden message by larger creators to smaller creators that in practice smaller creators have to let larger creators steal stuff from them for free. Later, in December 2020, then president Donald Trump signed a new copyright law in the USA that made such bully boy tactics by large creators more legally risky, but even now in 2023, similar bully boy tactics by larger creators against smaller creators might still be going on, by way of one or more legal loopholes, by which large creators can in practice continue to steal copyright material from small creators for free, or even extract money from the smaller creators that they steal from. People should look into such things, and see if copyright law needs even further revision. There is much that people complain about with regard to the December 2020 copyright bill that was signed by Donald Trump, and if the problem of larger creators stealing thumbnails for free has not been fixed, there is then that one more reason for Congress in America to take another look at copyright law as it stands now in June 2023, and for a new international copyright treaty to be written.

I feel like the creators that have younger age groups tend to do more of this because the kids don't notice it since they are probably lookin gat that topic in general through multiple vids and not caring but its also the kids that then take from that and do it themselves, its basically a chain reaction of my generation forgetting that there is such thing as plagiarizing

The reason I believe that taking ideas from larger YTers is OK is that your imitations won't overwhelm the algorithm. Someone more popular will have their vid brought up first cause they have more people to boost their metrics. Doing this to a smaller guy takes away traffic in a way that it wouldn't if you get an idea from a bigger guy.

3:43 thats not exactly stealing. "Steal like an artist" is a book that talks about artists taking inspiration from other artists and then making their own thing. Taking a concept or technique from another artist and applying it to your own art which is different from the other isnt exactly stealing. If that were then there would never be any genres, every genre would belong to someone.

There is a fine line between fair use and plagiarism, Ludwig has always stayed on the end of Fair Use, whilst Brent straight up leaps over the line. There's a huge difference between taking an idea/set of ideas and spinning more-so to your content and audience, than there is straight up ripping everything from a video.

It sounds cliche, but the difference is art. The original creator, even if inspired by other videos, was like, "You know what'd be cool? Making a living/side gig out of making cool videos." Brent, like most of the youtube channels that specifically target a younger audience clearly going in on "how can I make a buck off idiots and kids?" Can't wait for next years vid on him running NFTs with Logan Paul or whatever the next step for his kind is.
