We bought a 2018 earlier this year. I changed the oil as described in the video the first time.. I've changed it twice since without removing the cap on the bottom of the filter housing. I just remove the filter housing and let it drain while I'm draining the oil pan. Easier and quicker. It's really not any more of a mess than a spin-on filter.

Great video, thanks! I would just add one small thing: that on my RAV4 2018 there is a small plastic cover that has to be removed (4 pieces 10mm screws), so that the oil filter and oil screw can be seen and approached. Really great "invention", on my old VW Touran, I had to remove the complete motor cover, which is a lot more hassle.

Great video, but may want to add torque specs to your video description. Filter cap (housing) 18 ft·lb, Filter drain plug 9 ft·lb, Oil drain plug 30 ft·lb. Snug is great, but some peoples version of snug is still too tight. The cap is made of plastic, and not only can it be hard to get off next time if overtightened, but it can break (common problem) which really would be a bad day for someone. Torqueing the drain plug will ensure its never overtightened and stripped.

i have such hard time reading the dip stick, the tube always has residual oil on it and it looks like the oil is quart over the maximum ( i know it isnt). do any of you tilt the car abit to help drain a bit since bolt is not at lowest point of the pan?
@ThisGuyProductions
@ThisGuyProductions 3 жыл бұрын
You can lower the car to get it flat again, but the results will be nominal. You can drain the oil with the car elevated just fine. Interestingly, when you drain the oil you never get all of it out. There is always at least a half quart or so that stays in there between all the crevices and stuff. Thats why I tell folks to not add the complete amount listed on the owners manual. As long as the oil you add falls somewhere towards the upper half of the reading you are OK. Its also a good idea to run the engine for a few minutes after adding oil then re-checking the dip stick.
@Milanesa2010
@Milanesa2010 3 жыл бұрын
great video. Some observations. You do not need to jack up a RAV. I owned a couple. Hell, I even stopped jacking up my corolla a few years ago!! Is it tight? Sure; but very doable. Yes, taking the oil cap off makes the oil drain faster; equalizing atmospheric pressure will do that for you. The dip stick won't make a difference. You could also dry your washed hands in a dirty towel; but in the name of doing things correctly; just use clean oil to lubricate your o-rings and threads. To fill or not to fill!!! Technically, if you do not fill, you should see a small oil level drop after you run the car, let the oil settle, and take another look at the dip stick. But very small drop.

I have a Toyota rav4 2010. So what mean when check engine light, track light and 4wd light goes on at same time when is cold or wet days? It seems alot of rav4 owners have that problem. I know isn't related to this video but I hope you can tell me if that happen to you before?
@ThisGuyProductions
@ThisGuyProductions 3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you may have an electrical problem if they all come on. On another note the limited and the model listed as AWD have a 4 wheel drive system that automatically comes on when the vehicle senses traction issues. If it's wet out and it comes on automatically, it could be an indication that there is an issue with one or all of your tires. That doesn't explain the check engine light. I always advise folks to hit the Auto Zone when the light comes on. They can plug a gadget into the car port that tells you exactly what the check engine light is "coding" for.

You mean, what happens if you use the plastic thing to drain the oil from the filter housing but not replace the filter? If so, nothing really at first, but after a second oil change you will start to get some serious sludge down in that housing. I would play it safe and replace the filter ASAP.

If the oil filter housing installs at 90° exactly I'll pour some oil in there, but never on cars with oddly angled filter threads. A tiny amount of wear from a partially (or completely empty) filter at every service isn't going to significantly reduce the life of the engine.

I''ve changed our RAV4 a number of times now and since it takes 4.6 quarts I just pour 4/10 of a quart (13 ounces) off into a clean container and dump the remaining 4.6 into the car. It winds up right on the top line every time. I wonder if you had some still in the lower part of the pan since it was jacked up on one side. Dunno. No biggie. But I drive mine up on ramps which leaves it level side to side but rear low. It probably allows it to drain more thoroughly. One more point then I'll leave you alone ;) I suspect most of us don't have a 3/4" drive breaker bar. If not, a large socket can be used on that filter tool. Mine's a 24 mm.

@ThisGuyProductions
@ThisGuyProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Well I am somewhat of a chonker, so I cannot fit without jacking the car up. Yes, you are right that some of the oil will remain in the engine. That being said, a significant amount of oil always stays behind whether the car is jacked up or not. Thats why I always advise folks not to add the full "recommended" amount of oil without checking the dip stick first.

its not possible without a jack. The car is very low to the ground. You wouldn't fit and you probably wouldn't be able to fit an oil pan down there either. Fortunately you can pick up a floor jack and jack stand kit for fairly cheap. It will pay for itself in a couple of oil changes too.

I change the oil in my 2018 Rav-4 without the hassle of Jacking the vehicle up without any problem. Toss a piece of cloth on the ground to keep you clean. Use a 6" socket extension on the filter removal tool. Break the filter drain plug loose. Position the drain pan under the fillter and then unscrew to filter drain. Use the plastic tool to insert into the hole to drain the filter housing, and then use the oil filter gripper to break the filter loose. Do everything in reverse to complete the oil change.

I find ramps easier and safer. Also I wouldn't jack a unibody car where you did. Use the pinch welds where it's specified in the manual or jack the whole front up at the center jack point and put jack stands under the pinch welds. Block the rear tires too. Also, buy drain plug gaskets in bulk on Amazon. GM is the only company that's perfected the drain plug with a built-in gasket. Not sure why Toyota doesn't have this technology yet. 🤔

Yesterday I bought a conventional filter and some 5W-30 thinking I would change my oil today. Needless to say it didn’t happen. What upsets me the most is they have a manual in the oil filter section so you can ensure you buy the right part. I looked up my 2018 RAV4 in the manual before I bought the filter. Why was it even listed? I’m just aggravated. I’ll take the loss on the oil I bought and return the filter. It should run fine until I can take it to a dealer and have the filter changed with some OW-20.

The part for the filter housing costs about $16. From there all the other tools are standard.
@EXPLOBRO3
@EXPLOBRO3 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThisGuyProductions I was confused by your reply and had to read my comment again. I never said the tools were not standard. I was mainly upset because the oil filter index at the parts store listed the wrong filter. With that said it is pretty idiotic you need a specific oem wrench to get the housing off. Manufacturers are constantly creating proprietary parts and tools to squeeze that extra dollar out of us.

@@ThisGuyProductions if you look under the front bumper you will see a circular cutout in the molding to the drivers side of center. That is the manufacturer recommended lift point. Then for the Jack Stands you will notice the pinch welds just past the front wheel wells under the front doors. Because you only jack up one side I think oil gets trapped in the oil pan (it cannot drain out completely as the car is leaning to one side). And you need to run it and check again as running it fills the lines/filter etc. Those RAV4 have a lot of clearance so you may not even have to jack the car up at all.

@ThisGuyProductions
@ThisGuyProductions 3 жыл бұрын
I can tell you that 6qts is way too much for a Rav4. Are they sure they are giving you oil capacity? I drive an Avalon with an engine twice the size of the Rav4 and it doesn't use that much. 4.6 quarts is what I recommend you getting. You can purchase a 5 QT container and an oil filter as a bargain. We it comes to add oil back in, pour in only 4qt then run the engine for a minute. Then turn it off, let it rest for a min, then check the oil level again. Most likely you wont need all 4.6qts because it never all drains out during an oil change.
